Best Clear Bra part 1

Rimfaxe 06-29-2004 08:41 PM

Best Clear Bra
OK,
After looking around I must admit that I'm a little confused. I want to protect my new 05 Legacy GT Ltd Sedan. I've found the following paint protectors:

Rockblocker
Stonegard
Xpel (or X-pel)

They appear to be made out of the same 3M material, so what are the differences? Pricewise, Xpel seems to be the most expensive. Anyone have input regarding best fit and best value? I called Stonegard and they haven't cut the pattern for the legacy yet. Xpel has the complete kit on their website. I couldn't get anyone at Rockblocker, but Chad will probably read this...

So what's the diff? I will be having this professionally installed so that I don't have to look at my mistakes for the next 5 years or so.

Whadooya think?

edit: apologies in advance if this post belongs in Interior & Exterior Modification & Care. Wasn't sure where to post...

Rimfaxe,

Sorry you've had a tough time reaching us, we try to be very accessible anytime!

To answer your questions, the material is the same, 3M does make it.

For more info click here

The difference aside from price is the actual design of the clear bra. Xpel tends to have more pieces, relatively the same coverage and for some it is harder to install.

Stongard and Rockblocker have the same patterns, you get a little more coverage with the Stongard kit, but for the price, you won't notice it if you go with RockBlocker. ;)

Please feel free to contact us directly or post any other questions you may have.

FYI. Stay AWAY from Clearshield. It is a piece of crap.
iofdetiger 07-01-2004 03:17 AM

yeah, i'd go with rockblocker.
Sublime5260 07-01-2004 03:22 AM

damnit....i was expecting to see a transparent bra with a pair of tits behind it. o well

^^ ttiwwp

Just make sure you get someone who really knows how to install it. Make sure ALL borders are sticking to the paint, else a lot of dirt and water will get in. Once in, you would have to cut that affected area.

Go with Rockblocker! I have it on 2 off my cars and it's great!!!
Christoff 07-01-2004 02:21 PM

How about starshield? I have it on my car and its worked pretty good thus far....

Almost invisible on dark colors, but in any case much better looking than the paint chips that appear without them.
Calimoxo2 07-01-2004 04:39 PM

I have X-Pel....Black car

It was a royal pain in the Culo but it looks good.....it does scratch easily, but when you wax it blends in.....

I have the hood, L&R of the grille, under the markers and mirrors.....
CatchMyDrift 07-01-2004 04:47 PM

How does it do on Carbon Fiber? Just bought a hood and was thinking about doing this.

It does very well on CF! Chad has a carbon fiber hood on his MY02 and you don't notice it at all.

Imho, that is an unfortunate consequence of its function, since:
(1) the material has to be resilient enough to absorb the brunt of impact energy to protect the paint / lens surface from damage
(2) the material has to be flexible enough to be installable on non-flat surfaces.

All in all, given that "weakness", it's still a good product imho.

Had the 3M stuff for 2 years on my forester & almost 3 years on my impreza. I don't know much about the other brands, but I know I'm satisfied with the 3M-based paint & lens protection materials thus far.

My whole front end is covered in Rockblocker! Can't even see it can you!

Show Off!, LOL

It really doesnt matter what color vehicle you have the product looks good on all these days. Even white. 3M just came out with their next generation film last month and it rocks. You will only see the film under certain light conditions and if you dont wash your car. The dirt line starts at the edge of the product, but can be washed away easily.

Did you leave a message at all? I was in AZ doing group installs and buying a house so sorry for not a faster reply, but Amber looks like she jumped on the thread quickly which is a good thing.

Spoke with you-
Thanks, I spoke to Chad a couple of days ago. Thanks to Rockblocker for getting back to me. Ping me when the patterns are cut for the 05 Legacy GT Ltd Sedan! I'm sure it will be pretty soon. I'm looking forward to getting this on the car while the paint is still relatively intact!

Thanks again, look forward to hearing from you!

I was thinking about getting a RockBlocker kit for my Legacy GT Sedan (MY00).

1 question though. If I ALREADY have chips and scratches on my front bumper, when I put RockBlocker on, will they be more or less noticable?

My Car is black, which really makes them stand out as is...

They will look the same. I would touch up the larger ones and then cover it so you dont more. I just did one today like that. I have even have smoking deals on the StonGard kits too. Let me know if you have any other questions.

RockBlocker and Stongard are the same. Chad is the VP of Operations for Stongard. As Chad said the main differences are in the disign of the pattern. Stongard's claim to fame is the wrapping of the leading edge of most of the hood and an aversion to any and all seams. Makes it harder to install.

Xpel has had the patterns for the new 05's for a month or more. I was looking for a GT and was surprised to see the pattern was available before my area dealer had their cars.

Like most will point out, the install is key. Ask a lot of questions and check out samples of the finished product if possible. Like tint, it is easy to under pay and get a crappy product, even if they use the best material. Sooo go with what the installer recomends. In the end that is what will make you the happiest.

What do all of these things run and do you have to go to some kind of dealer or what

Is a good way to find a reputable shop. Most dealers who are on top of things offer them. Although you can find some bargains for the material online, you are better off finding some shop that does it and get it from them. The again if you are super cheap you could always look on eBay  It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff you can find on eBay!!! I have had it on a variety of vehicles over the years and would never drive one without it again, it is that good! I don't have the patience to do it myself so I go the professional route.

Good luck, there are a lot of good places out there. Oh price. Varies widely depending on where you live, who does it, how much gets covered and what they use. Search for clear bra on any forum or yahoo and lots will come up!

Good luck
