If you do a search you'll probably find some info.

I remember reading before that you have to open up the headlights and sand something down

I know I wouldn't attempt to open up my $700 headlights :o

Afraid you'll let the headlight genie out? :p

Look for Imprezer's post, there is a sheild inside the lamps. You could sand that down, or better yet use it as a template and fabricate one out of an aluminum soda can. I think this is a better solution because you can create the exact type of cut off you want. Sand down the stock one will only raise the level of the cutoff, creating more glare.

You sure you wanna open up those headlights? If something goes wrong, thats 700 bucks and change down the drain. Anyways, RHD isnt that bad.
gooter80 12-18-2002 01:04 PM

its easy, just throw them in the oven for 10 mins at 225 and pull em apart
TaiChih 12-18-2002 02:35 PM

There is a curved aluminum piece that makes the light shine RHD.
You can either replace it with something else with the opposite angle or modify the existing shield.

thanks for helping me out, guys

what i want to know is, did anyone do this successfully? also, where can i get the instruction on how to modify the aluminum piece? i remember the thread "STI lights exposed" by Imprezer about a year ago, but the thread died out without any info. on how to do this...

I've had my JDM RHD lights for ~2 weeks now. After some careful aiming I don't worry about blinding anybody - and I can see anything that's directly in front of my car.

No worries, no hassles, I wouldn't even THINK of baking my lights as I don't perceive a large problem...
zacek 12-18-2002 06:41 PM

let me see If I can find the pics of my mod. I did open the lamps and made a flat beam out of them. A Flat Beam is the BEST, it beats the LHD or RHD beams.
BlueWRX 12-18-2002 07:09 PM

zacek: if you have any pics so that i can have an idea of what to do, that would be very helpful for me!! can you also tell me how you did it? thanks in advance.
Leonardo 12-19-2002 08:54 AM

Thank god I saved a bit more and got LHD's :alien: Not so much of a PITA!

Leo:cool:

ok, I found the pics, I will download to my computer as soon as I get a chance, so just bear with me, however today it looks very busy.

Totally agree with you. Everyone makes such a big deal out of the RHD, but all you have to do is adjust the aim and its fine.

The problem is now you bet flashed by people on your side of the road!? (Or at least I do and my lights are aimed kinda low).

I think zacek has the right of it (considering I've seen his car personally). Perfectly flat beams means you can aim just high enough to get maximum depth penetration without being high enough to bother drivers going either direction.
clamdip 12-19-2002 11:26 PM

hmmm i wonder
gbrockREX 12-20-2002 01:53 AM

Zacek, i would also appreciate some direction in this department!
gbrockREX 12-21-2002 09:30 PM

There is two locations to get the info you probably want:

Alex's post on taking apart the headlights:

And this guys site on modifying the beam pattern on his projector headlights:

I've always wondered about whether or not you might get flashed with the LHD lights. If you think about it, instead of blinding oncoming drivers, you're blinding people driving to the right of you arent you? So wouldnt you have to adjust the beam either way?
Zahnster 12-23-2002 02:41 PM

Well not blinding them, but you're perhaps as bad (or with poor aiming worse) that every tall/lifted truck/suv on the road. It's just they don't expect light that high from a car so they get a little upset. I guess they don't think that way about SUVs that shine right in your rear window/mirror.
zacek 12-23-2002 03:23 PM

hey! that coke can cut is a pretty good idea, however the metal layer is too thin I am not sure it will hold the extreme temps in the long run. Anywayz I promise to post those instructions and pics over the next 2 days since I do not work.
zacek 12-24-2002 03:41 PM

damm, my people keep me busy, I have had no time for written instructions yet, but here is a link to the pics. They are unprocessed and therefore raw, crude, big, dark and out of sequence but it is there.

Neil Wallerstein 12-24-2002 03:53 PM

Dang, I don't think I'm brave enough to take my STi HIDs apart. What did you do about all the fingerprints, dust and stuff?
NeedaWRX 12-24-2002 04:15 PM

rubber gloves and a clean room
krazedant 12-24-2002 09:20 PM

Good job man. They look really nice now with the flat beam pattern instead of the angled pattern.
WRXerist 12-24-2002 09:36 PM

Sweet deal. I got the LHD and I love it. The beam patterns sort of bother still. I used to have the RHD. I wish the beam pattern doesn't look it the way it is but I love the JDM lights.
zacek 12-26-2002 02:24 PM

yup, u just have to be really clean while u work with the stuff, and is not really HARD at all, is juts time consuming. The hair dryer work wonderfully.
