Obvious Question? Is the space next to the cupholder 1/4 DIN?
I'm just curious. It looks like it, but I was wondering if any trimming, etc. is needed to fit a 1/4 DIN device in there. How much room is behind that plate?
Thanks!

bump, any answers in ages?

With the right amount of triming, most anything can fit. Keep your dremel handy. I think I have seen others mount their stero in this area. People who put a LCD screen were the stock unit is.

I've found many threads talking about installing something there, but all the pics are either gone or unavailable! Can someone proud of their install share some pics? I had the piece out tonight, and was wondering if you need to grind down any of that material behind the fake panel that looks like ribbing...

I'd like to see something there.
Especially a clock!
or
Has someone removed both the dead spot AND the cupholder and done something with all that space.

Yeah i've seen pics of the Blitz DTT in that slot and it looks pretty nice. But i'm getting a guage set and taking out the OEM clock. What I want to see is a setup of the clock fitting in that area by the cup holder.
I havnt even taken the clock out to see if its too big to fit in that area.
Conduit: you might wanna do a search on Blitz DTT instalations, there was one around that showed exact pics of where to drill and shave stuff off.

First, AFAIK, Blitz 'made up' this thing they call 1/4 DIN size. "Real' 1/4 DIN is 96mm x 96mm, I believe. When somebody here says 1/4 DIN they mean Blitz turbo timer size, I think?
As for beside the cupholder clock, that's my plan, but just started on it last night.

DIN stands for "Deutscher Industrie Normenausschus" which basically means "German Industry Standard". The dash sizing thing-o-mo-bob is based on that. Blitz didnt make it up
Also, check this out, from my dash:

I think its time I wrote some docs on how to do this...

There's a good amount of depth behind that plate. I put in my HKS TTT1 in there as one of my first mods, back in, umm, October, I think. Looks nearly identical to the above pic, and was easy to do with a Dremel and two bits - cutting and grinding.

Perhaps you should AskJeeves "What is 1/4 DIN?" It's clear Blitz didn't! Yes its a standard size. Its not anything near the size of a Blitz controller however.

By the way, 1/4 DIN or not, whatever, 98kPa that looks great! Great craftsmanship.
Like others, I got gauges, miss the clock. Here's part one of a quite small clock to fit discreetly is that same place. My intent is only the LED face will show.

98kPa - Awesome installation, thanks for the pic.
Sam2 - I miss my clock, I may do something similar.

98kPA - That looks awesome. What is it? Please write some instructions!
It looks better than the pic posted by rwjcp721 because the blank thing is on both sides. Just my opinion.
I'd like to see how the clock fits.

The only part of the clock to be visable will be the LCD face itself, I think. Still deciding if I want to expose micro push switches to set time. For me myslef, think don't mind pop the panel twice a year to set up or back an hour.
Actually, seeing two other nice uses this space, I'm less inclined to 'use it up' so fast. I''m looking around elsewhere on dash too. As can see, only needs just over an inch.

has anyone done work with their carbon fiber trim kit?? Also do they make carbon fiber clocks?? Cause I doubt that silver lining will look good flushed in with the carbon fiber. I hope the black face doesnt look bad either.

plucky,
Thanks for posting that question. That is exactly my situation, too. I had to take the WRX with the fake carbon fiber dash option because it was the only way last Summer that I could get reasonable delivery time. I want to use both spaces, actually (the blank on the left and the unused "cup holder" on the right) but I've been concerned about how it would look. It would be great if some other folks have figured this out and can share their experiences and findings with us!

Kinda cool, we ended up with very similar looking installs. One thing I notice is that you also left a gap around the device of about the same width of the other gaps on the trim panel. I did this, and most people didn't even spot the thing in there until I pointed it out. It looks more balanced to the eye.
What bits did you end up using? I found that the flat barrel orange stone worked very well after cutting with the disks. I have to clean it up tomorrow.
Out of curiosity, what did you use to stabilize/attach it in there? I am using the velcro pad that came with it, supported by some pieces of dynamat, but it doesn't fit as perfectly or securely as I'd like. Any advice?
take care,
rob

98kPa and rwjcp721:
What are those, are they just clocks? I can't tell from the pics if that is all they are? Also, I have the A'pexi TT sitting here on my desk, and I have seen some nice pics of installs on this site, but they are all gone now. That was my plan for the space. However, I know that Clifford makes an alarm with a remote starter safe for a standard trans. I think I may get that, and if so, I hear it has a TT function. Then maybe I will be looking for something to do with that space again :D

You may have to get ahold of Jason (98kPa) on the irc channel. See off-topic's sticky for the info. I'll see if he's available to write up installation instructions.

I know, it sucks for you guys that I have a life  !!!! Tomorrow (Saturday) I will pull the dash part again and show you. I shoulda just taken photos at the time when I did the whole TT intstall in the first place. But it took longer than I thought (surprise! ;) ) it was the first mod I did to the car. It was cold and dark (before DST kicked in)... soooooon fellas, soooon...
look at the www button, and see more pics of my interior. If yer nice I give you the scoop on installing the HKS gauge pod ;)
My next interior project will be a custom/aftermarket/or OE cannibalization of a pod hood in the middle with 52mm autometer or blitz indiglo gauges.
