Another question on R-compound tires

I am shopping for a set of tires that I can use on my Forester for AutoX only. The Foresters have different suspension than STI and one of the differences is that you can't use tires wider than 235 without spacers or they start rubbing in the back.
So my questions are:
1. I usually see cars with wide R-compound tires with width starting from 245 and up. Does this mean that buying 225 or 235 r-compounds won't do me any good and I should just buy a set of good street tires instead?
2. Do any of you use spacers (AutoX only) to increase stability. Does it work? If yes what size spacers do you use?
3. I was thinking about buying another set of ROTA wheels for my AutoX set of tires. Generally Rota wheels come in 17x7.5 size. Will 7.5 cm footprint width going to be enough for 235/?/17 R-compound tires to feel an improvement over the same dimention street tires.
My apology in advance in case my questions are not well formulated. I never used R-compound tires before so lack of proper knowledge an terminology is very possible.
Thank you,
Alex

Alex,
The Rota Slipstream in 17x8.5 Et48 would fit your Forrester w/o any issues. The only issue would come from what size tire you'd like to run. For example, I used to run a 275 Kuhmo V710 on that same wheel!!!! I also ran a Yokonama A032 in 245 width.
So, dependant on what you have for suspension mods, the only limiting factor is tire width.
People usually run spacers due to having the wider tires. The spacers allow the wheel to be moved away from the suspension. In doing this, however, those of us using the 275+ wide tires have had to stiffen the suspension. This is because in these "extreme" cases the tires are sticking out past the fenders by at least 10mm. So, having the stiffer suspension prevents the tires from rubbing.
In any case, I used that Rota wheel succesfully for awhile. Get a set, then go get some 245 or 255 r-comps. Oh, and prepare for a world of difference!!!!!!

Jose, thank you. I have stock struts so the wides tires I can afford to have without spacers are 235s. Do you think that average 235 R-compound tires would still do better than good 235 street tires?
| waktasz | 07-04-2006 02:20 PM |
Of course R comps will be stickier than the same sized street tires.
Also, there are quite a few Rotas available in 17x8. Torques, Revs, Slipstreams to name a few. (also, wheel size measurements are both in inches)

OK, people are offering opinions on wheel sizes, but no one is asking what class you're in. If you're in stock, you have to use the same diameter and width of wheel as stock (includes factory optional wheel sizes, but not dealer-installed sizes). There is a limit on the wheel offset and/or on the amount of spacer you can use too.
If you're in ST*, R-comps aren't allowed.
If you're in SP*, there are plenty of things you can do to fix the clearance issues. :)
So what class are you in, first?

if you end up looking for a "cheaper" way out on tire that will last the rest of the season, pm me. i have a set of hoosier as305 225/45/17 with 14 30-60 second runs on them. PLENTY of life left in them, ill let them go for 500 + shipping if needed

Or, for another tire option that'll last a whole season of autocross, I have a set of BRAND NEW Hoosier R3S05s, 245/40-17, that I'll sell for $600 plus shipping.

Currently my car qualifies as SM, but I don't really care what class I would end up in. I am not trying to compete professionaly, I'm just doing it for fun. I'm going to get some decent tires and maybe swap to STI steering rack and Whiteline bushings - that's all.

I think 245s are too wide, but I'm not sure. It would be great to try them on my car and see if they are rubbing first. How far do you live from Maryland?

About as far as you can get, unfortunately. If you find a way to figure it out, and you still want them, let me know.

If your worried about the R comps then a set of Hankook RS2's might be a good compromise, great in the wet (not quite as good as RA1's but last longer).
| Paisan | 07-05-2006 12:31 AM |
I haven't tried the Hankooks yet, but hopefully next season I'll give them a shot.

2nded. Fresh(ish) V710s in rain without much standing water can still be faster than street tires, and in some cases, faster even than Hoosier wets.

Will a Forrester on stock suspension and big R-tires be stable? You might want some suspension upgrades on your list ahead of other mods.

If that's the case, he'd most likely be better off with good street tires than trying to autocross with road-race compound tires.

It's kind of 'understood' and doesn't have to be re-iterated that r-compounds need some modicum of warmth to 'work'.
Competitive Auto-x and December does not compute. ;)

I have only stock struts. I have Forester STI pink springs and rear Impreza STI sway bar. But the struts are the ones what's rubbing.

Alex, you need to remember that the majoroty of R-compound tires run wider than the same size street tire. The 225 V710's I run are as wide as a 245 width street tire.
If I were you, and just doing this for fun. I'd run the 255/40/17 V710 on an 8" or bigger rim. Run some camber plates up front so they last longer, and have some fun. Even a set of 225/50/16 V710's on your stock rim will have you grinning each time your turn the wheel.

R compounds + Stock Suspension + high center of gravity vehicle + Auto-x = Grip Roll
I'd stick with some Azenis rather than Rs until I put in a lower suspension and some sways on that forester.
