My regular 2.5i key isn't chipped either is it? I thought the chip thing was in the keyless entry remote? I have the silver/blue STi key from you Jamie :D And I only use it, and my remote...and the car works lol
MMM, my valet key IS chipped.
on 05 and 06's the valet key is chipped, it just wont open the trunk or glove box, if it wasnt chipped the damn car wouldnt start!
2mprzya 07-25-2006 11:50 AM

theres a chip in the key that when placed in the ignition, the car senses and turns on the fuel and everything. this is why it can be expensive to do a remote start on cars with keys with chips in them, because you have to have the key placed in the car so it can sense the chip.

05 and newer have them, and i believe it was an option on the 04's as well.
SUBYDOODIE 07-25-2006 09:46 PM

so since AAA made me plastic version of my key... all i'll be able to do is open the doors then right?
Ghosthound 07-25-2006 10:14 PM
so since AAA made me plastic version of my key... all i'll be able to do is open the doors then right?
thats correct. thats why theives dont actually steal new cars since most new cars are chipped. instead they just steal everything else... ie doors, hoods, wheels, electronics, seats, etc...
wrxfool 07-25-2006 10:20 PM

So if you have a remote starter the y have to hide a key in your dash (at least that's what they did for mine) I made sure the guy filed the key down so it wouldn't work in the ignition if someone ever decided totry and find it.

Now that that's out of the way, this should mean that the chip is always there, which means that I can get a 04 sti key, or any key get it cut and it should work. or won't it?? this can mean some serious $$ savings if you need to replace a key. I think I will go to walmart and get one made to see if it works.
mikecoscia 07-25-2006 11:08 PM

is there enough room to machine a small hole in the o4 key to fit the chip? Never took the chip out so not sure how large it is.
