Seat add-ons for back support? part 1

Seat add-ons for back support?

My back kills me after about a half an hour of driving in my car. I'd like to buy some racing seats that hug my back better and offer better support, but I don't want to give up my side-impact air bags. So I was wondering if there are any products that you can add to the stock seats that help with back support. (And don't look like ass. ;))

I haven't tried or even seen any of these products in person - but I have heard that Taxi drivers swear by these. I'd be all for them too if they didn't look so... So... Septagenarian. :-)

Maybe someone can figure out how to install them INSIDE the stock seat cover! :)

sparcousa.com i think thats there site.... they have something for lower back support
ninrex 07-10-2002 12:23 AM

Sigh... Just how important are side-impact air bags? ;)

I suppose those don't look too horribly bad, but not the coolest looking thing to have sitting in my WRX.

I guess I should've thought of that, thanks.

These don't look too bad. I'm imagining a black one on either side of the seat. Hard to say from the pictures how you're supposed to use it other than they say 'side kidney/lumbar support' so I figure one on each side.

Momo makes them too... They are longer than the sparco ones. I had a couple momo seats in my old civic that had them. Very comfortable. They are probably $80 a piece or something. They just attach with velcro (sp?).

...oops. Guess I should research before I post. Here they are from www.sportscar-parts.com. $23 a piece.

Are you supposed to use just one of those Momo pads per seat? I think with the Sparco pads that I posted, you use two - one on each side.
BigRich 07-10-2002 09:31 AM

Just one in the middle... Yes, I think you are correct the sparco pads hold the sides of your back.

tokigi: I'm confused, are you offering to sell these to me? (I also want the smallish Subaru emblem you have on your trunk lid as well. :) )

Bumpity bump bump.

Cool, thanks for the links. I thought it was more of a badge than a decal though, oh well.

Are there any vendors here that can get me these Sparco cushions?! Please, take my money! :p

I have a bad lower back so I got the Sparco lumbar pads, I stuck them under the seat cover and it looks and feels pretty good. Wish I had the cash for some real seats.

this is a good site to show how to install an inflatable lumbar support

last time i check it was down, but i save the page locally for future reference.
BillMiya 07-12-2002 10:03 AM

I know that the seats are zipped on to the frame. But has anyone unzipped this to put a lumbar support/back support unit under the original seat cover?
ChuckCheeze 07-12-2002 10:13 AM

since WRX Library is still down, i hope they dont mind

Lumbar Support
If you have had back trouble with the stock seats but you don't want to replace them with new ones then this mod might be for you. You could possibly substitute the padding I made with inflatable lumbar supports if you find this mod to solve your problems.

Pull out the two zippers on the back side of your seats and pull them up.
Loosen the bottom of the fabric by pulling it down and out.
Cut a sheet of insulation to a similar size as seen in the pictures below.
Again, install them in the same fashion as in the pictures.
Fasten the fabric again and zip the zippers!

The edges have been tapered to make sure they flex and not cut into the seat material.

Make sure you don't pinch anything. I pushed mine down in-between the metal bar and the padding.

Now, take it for a test drive and see if you like it. You can take them out pretty easily and substitute them with other pads if you so wish.

Hmm, good idea. I like the fact that no ugly cushions are visible and the seat looks stock. It doesn't look like that insert would be very comfortable though, but I guess it would be easy to make adjustments to your liking. Thanks! :)

Just installed 'real' lumbar support

here's what I did...

I contacted an OEM lumbar support supplier - Shukra Manufacturing. http://www.schukra.net/lumbarsupports.htm

I got one of their "4-way" electronically controlled lumbar supports - two adjustment switches, for both height and amount of lumbar support. http://www.schukra.net/products/model_n_big.htm

It's nice. It's a real lumbar support, and the adjustment capabilities are great.

Note that they don't really sell to individuals, really only to OEMs or trim shops, but they sold me one, I installed it myself (it was SURPRISINGLY easy) and it's great. The switches don't quite fit the punchouts in the middle trim next to the e-brake, but with a little chisel workmanship they fit nicely now

They have a few models, manual and electric. I think they even have a massaging one... but I wouldn't do that for a car...

Install, cost of Shukra lumbar support

Got a PM about this, figured I'd post it

Terminology:
2-way: One control - in or out of the seat back.
4-way: Two controls - in/out of seat, and up/down height

The prices when I bought them were $33 for a 2-way manual, $75 for a 2-way power, $110 for a 4-way power. I got the 4-way power. Figured that my back comfort was worth it (my Chiropractor agrees :)

Install:

There are no install instructions. This is what I did/learned:
Step A: Put the lumbar in the seat
Step B: Adjust console to fit switches
Step C: Wire in the harness

Turns out it isn't really necessary  to remove the seat like I did.

Details:

Step A: Install the support
To put the support in the seat all you really need to do is open the back zippers, put the plastic sheet in and put the support in.
The support fits directly on the lower structural bar of the seat - that's where the brunt of it's load is borne. The top of it doesn't really secure to anything... I used some wire-ties to possibly keep it from moving left and right. I'm going to take another look now that it's done and see if there is a good place to secure it.
Wire-tie the wiring so that it routes inside the seat belt latch, like the other wire, and goes to the underneath of the seat.
Close things up.

Step B: Adjust the Console Cover to fit Switches
The switches they provide are nice. However, they are too large for the punchouts in the WRX's console (next to the e-brake).
The best technique I learned for this was to use a 1" woodworking chisel to remove:
- The indented notch in the punchout channel - has to have the entire rectangle available
- a very small amount of the outer surface material (so that the cover on the switch can fit)
- Two notches of material on the underside - so that the latches of the switch can securely fasten.
The chisel workes the best - you can push in the corner and angle it downto cut into material from 'above', and you can use the angled flat on the top of the chisel touching the material to scrape horizontally to remove material from a flat.
A razor doesn't work that well - too flexible, and cuts everything up.
Also, make sure that the switches don't stick after you have them in there. If they stick, they are fit too tightly.

Step C: Wiring
First, familiarize yourself with the wiring. There is one connector for the support - it will end up under the seat. There are two connectors - one for each switch. There is a power connector with a 15 Amp fuse.
Loosen the console so that you can route the wiring.
Remove the face of the radio cover (prob need to remove cupholder), and be prepared to remove the radio (Note: Be really careful when removing the radio - the face of it scratches easily, and the back of it WILL scratch your interior). I normally don't take it all the way out, I leave the wires connected, but it's cumbersome to work with. It may help to remove the shift knob and its cover - I did)
Route the harness from the console near the e-brake. Start by running the connector to under the seat. Run it under the carpet alongside the seatbelt and airbag wires. Note: It won't reach the carpet opening that the other two wires come out of :( so use the one closer to the console. Go ahead and plug it in to the seat - make sure that you have enough slack to move the seat forward and backward.
Next, run the power leads up the console along the passenger's side, with the other wires there. Remember where the switches will connect; there's not a lot of slack in the harness, don't take too much for the power leads.
Connect the power leads to a source. I used the extra lighting power source on the back of the radio. I had to remove the leads from the Shukra connector - but they can slide right in to the WRX's connector. Just make sure to get the positive lead correct (test it with a meter). I covered most of the exposed leads with electrical tape (could have used shrink tube) and slid the leads in.
Wire-tie the power leads to the existing wires - both in the back of the radio and along the console.
Now, test it to make sure that your switches are oriented the way you like. Plug them in with the console still apart, turn the ignition to running (no need to start it) and test it.
When everything is operating the way you like re-assemble the radio, console, and all the trim.

Enjoy!

If you want something quick, I went to the heathyl back store and found one of those foam pads that contours to your spines shape or whatever, same stuff that really nice bed and pillow are made of. Anways, it is the exact same color as the seat and it fit perfectly between the side bolsters! Its like it was made for the seat. I couldn't be happier, and I don't have to open my seat. Only, one problem is when it's really cold, it's a as hard as a rock, but it warms up really quick.

I really recommend it, I can take pics if you really want.

Just a question but why would switching the seats get rid of the side airbags??

Nice! Do you have any pictures? :D

I'd love to, but can't post attachments...

Not sure why, but I can't post attachments anymore. Maybe my pics of my DeltaDash data were too big?Anyway, for pics of the supports themselves, see the earlier links.

For pics of my install, I'd love to provide them, if I could post them.

I can show you my V1 shut-off switch and my integrated DeltaDash serial cable at the same time :)

(and hopefully sometime soon my microswitch for MBC @ WOT, once I finish making, testing and installing my MBC)
