After a 14-year hiatus

Miki Biasion, winner of the 1988 Olympus Rally
Former WRC rally to run as 2006 United States Rally Championship event Shelton, WA (July 26, 2005) - Massimo "Miki" Biasion was the last competitor to take the podium in this event, besting teammate Alex Fiorio, both driving Lancia Delta Integrales.
American John Buffum completed the podium in his Audi Coupe Quattro. Winners in previous years included rally legends Markku Alen and Juha Kankkunen, aka the "Flying Finns". The Olympus Rally played host to the infamous Group B cars, and now it is back after a 14 year hiatus.
Scheduled for May 19-20, 2006 as the fourth round of the United States Rally Championship, the Olympus International Rally will run many of the same roads as in its previous iterations. It will also be a Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) calendar listed event through the United States Auto Club (USAC), bringing back the international flavor that has made the event part of American and World rally history.
"We are very excited to be returning this event to both the national and international stage," stated Steve McQuaid, Chairman of the rally, "it's nice to bring the event out with a bang at this level of competition and organization."
"We like to think that we have the best rally roads in the United States, if not the world," added McQuaid, "and we're looking forward to hosting the best competitors the United States and the world has to offer on them."
The United States Rally Championship, America's premier rally championship, consists of Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) internationally listed events sanctioned by United States Auto Club (USAC) and presented by the National Auto Sport Association (NASA).

Look at it as a healthy step towards bringing back WRC.

you can be darn sure that IF the WRC was coming back to the USA, there would be more noise about it than a simple press release on SS...

"Former WRC rally to run as 2006 United States Rally Championship..."
You must really want WRC here to have read that as a statement that it was going to be a WRC event! :D

The FIA doesn't like to surprise people with WRC events. I'm sure we'll have a couple years warning were we ever to have a WRC event. Not like that is going to happen anytime soon.
Still, it sounds like a great event and I plan on being there. Now if they can just get a couple of Quattros and Integrales out there to race I'd buy my ticket right now.

Isn't the timing the co-driver's problem? ;)
The FIA system isn't that bad if they don't make you go through the CARWASH on the way to time control..
Looking forward to another great event up there.
BTW Jamie, huge props on all of the great recent press you've been getting for the sport (and your sponsors) lately. :D

It's always been FIA listed, in fact there are a few FIA listed rallies in the USA, but it's still not a WRC event.

Actually the POR (Press on Regardless) rally which is still run under the name LSPR (Lake SUperior Pro Rally) was the first WRC event in the USA but that was a long time ago. THe best ever story from the Olympus what that they had Richard Dean Anderson (Mcgyver spelling?) and some other guy running course opening and the two started racing and ended up offing each other.
| DriftnWRX | 07-28-2005 03:48 PM |
 that is the funniest thing I've heard in a while! Wonder who the other guy was.

Whoops you are right Wilson. As I get older, my memory gets worse. I now think that I used to drive fast. :-)
