Who wants to see a Forester whip a Porsche?

I'd like to run a Forester XT in the SUV class for the One Lap of America, but need a little help from Subaru. Does anyone have a contact I can send a proposal to? Last year a Twin Turbo Cayenne won the SUV class. I think a properly tuned Forester would whip it and would then be crowned the fastest SUV in America. Thanks.

Good luck, but I think the Forester is considered a car by the NHTSA/DOT, not an SUV...

Actually, it would be classed wherever Cannonball Enterprises decides to put it. They don't follow NHTSA/DOT, SCCA or anybody else's classing conventions. My guess is, they'd find the David vs. Goliath aspect of a Forester taking on a Porsche pretty amusing - and would approve the Forester as an SUV.

That would be SIC! And I do believe quite possible.

I talked to Brock Jr. last year and he said he would classify it as an SUV. <--- That banana guy rocks.

I agree with Steve.
However, it is highly likely that Subaru certified the Forester as a "multipurpose passenger vehicle" which is NHTSA's vehicle classification for most "SUVs." It would be printed on Subaru's certification label that is most likely in the driver's door jamb.

I'd love to see a Forester whip not only a Porsche but anything else it can including (in the SUV class) an X5 and an M-class.
One of my long-term crazy dreams is to run a Studebaker (other than an Avanti) in the One Lap, just to finish and get the name back out in the public eye. This would be the next best thing and no doubt a lot less nerve-wracking.
Good luck, I'm pulling for ya!

There's a guy that lives next door to where I work who seems to be a Studebaker nut. I think he's a Saab dealer, since I see different new Saabs parked outside from time to time, but he has some "Official Studbaker Service" signs and 2 Studes, a truck and a car.
Great car, can't tell whether it's coming or going :)

Here are a couple pics I took this afternoon when I took mine out to stretch its legs. I think you should be able to tell which end is coming and which is going: ;)

Don't mean to hijack the thread, so I'll bring it back on topic by saying I use my Forester as a parts hauler for this car's restoration.

It'd be fun to see a forrester compete, but its chance against a V8 twin turbo regardless of weight will be tough. Handling, maybe, but no one has credited the Forrester with that. My guess is you'd have some good times but no class win unless you spent ALOT.

this is not a new idea but i still love it .. it was discussed 2+ years ago when the STi forester type M came out (read badass SUV) http://www.subaru-sti.co.jp/typeM/main.html
with a larger turbo and a reflash it could easly have more power than the type m
it would also provide a nice place for some one to sleep in the back

I don't know Chris. There was a write up in one of the last couple of Car and Drivers about the one lap Cayenne and they say it was really hampered by all its extra weight. Sure the Forester would be down on power but its also going to weigh a whole lot less. I would think that you could get one close to the performance of Luke's wagon from this past year and he pretty handily beat the Cayenne.

if the early tuning of the STI is any indiction i don't think 350+ is a big streach for power

90% of the blame for that falls on the tires. The rest falls on the suspension's optimization for uneven surfaces. Put some real rubber, drop it a couple inches with circuit-valved struts and good springs, put real bushings and swaybars in and it'd probably do only a little worse than a prepped WRX wagon.
Yeah, $$$. That's why he's looking for sponsors, right? ;)

You guys are right. The power potential and the handling potential is there. It would just take a few dollars, a good set up and a good driver. It's really not very difficult.

SOA, hook this man up!!! This is a great idea and would be great publicity for Subaru. I agree that a modded Forester with a steady, consistent, quick driver like Luke will be more than a match for a turbo Cayenne...it will DESTROY it.
I'm still marveling at your performance in last year's one lap. In the recent C&D writeup, they had little tidbits of some of the competitors and I can't believe they left you out because yours was such a great story. Good luck with it!!!

yea, i got shafted on the C/D article. the author practically worships the neon guys. and then they do a cut out of that twin turbo hks lexus IS300 that was in my class and wasn't even a factor. at least now i know who the author is so next time i can do some brown nose-ing. most everyone mentioned was "buddies" with the author (tony swan).

I can understand about the neon guys since they did barely win their class (although they can count their lucky stars you had the strut mount problem), but when I skimmed over the others, especially the one about that turbo IS300, I was thinking to myself who gives a crap. I could not continue reading!
I figured about the politics, which is BS, but oh well. Hopefully you can take it out on that poor Cayenne this time!!

In Car and Driver August issue when they test the XT and Porsche, they would the XT to be .3 sec slower in a 1/4mi, and found it faster than the WRX. So it is plenty fast. Just need good tires and a stiffer suspension.

Good luck on doing this. Honestly, I think it would be an easier win than over Evolutions, STi's, Neons, etc in the sedan class. I think that the biggest competition for the SUV category would be an FX35 w/ turbo(s). Less weight than the FX45 with more R&D into aftermarket products. The much lower weight of a Forester would be ideal, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if anybody makes any hardcore suspension for it.
