I predict burnsy to pull this one off, with makinnen and mcrae battling it out for 2nd/3rd.

Now that i think more about it, i think it might be a subaru weekend, with the rutted mountain roads possible causing problems for the shorter Pug's. Too bad i will be travelling heh.

i am backing Petter for this one, i just have this feeling he is ready.
I expect the fords to be very strong too.
Gronholme will be the top pug again.

I don't like Burns, but he is a good driver.

I'm done with predictions :) Judging by not only the results of the past rallys, but also how well some of the younger guys are doing(Martin, Duvall, etc.), seems there are quite a few guys able to take the top spot.
As always though, cheering for our Subaru crew. A one-two does not seem out of the question, although I'm not predicting it so it doesn't count as a jinx ;)
Would be nice if Arai took top spot in Group N in the new STi as well. Can't wait!

Agreed - so little interest in Rally Argentina, and it starts today!? And where has our "in-house" WRC expert Mr. Felstead been hiding?
Maybe too many people over in OT writing "own3d" and "n00b".
Ed
edit: Gronholm talking much smack re teammate Burns as well as McRae and Makinen. This does make Peugeot look the WRC equivalent of the New York Yankees, especially the "Bronx Zoo" Yankees of the 1970's:

I was about to mention Gronholm's comments. Thing I noticed is that Burns has quite the reputation. Petter Solberg has said that Burns was a difficult person to work with.
Stage II:
Gronholm
Makinen
Solberg
Rovenpera
Burns
McRae
Juha Kankkunen (Hyundai)!
Eriksson (Skoda)!
Sainz
Panizzi
Right now Arai is 18th overall! Looks like he's leading in Production class. Go Toshi!
I'm not surprised to see Gronholm out front. After seeing his previous performances, I became convinced that Gronholm will be the man to beat all season. Burns is competitive, but I don't think he's gonna be able to take Marcus down. Of course, all Provera wants is the Maker's title. Driver's title is "icing on the cake".
Marcus's comments have some merit, I think. Tommi has made a few mistakes, some of which probably shouldn't have been made by a veteran like him. Of course, he was planning to retire. And I think he himself admitted that he made mistakes that he shouldn't have. Of course, it's no revelation that Colin has been making a lot of errors. He is a fast driver, but a little reckless.
Of course, in Burns' rebuttal, you can sense the arrogance: "It's normal wherever the biggest threat comes from."

Sainz just continues to have the worst luck with the Focus. This time power steering failure (again?). If this keeps up, Subaru will be second in Maker's title points. With only two drivers.

Toshi still leading in Production. What happened to Petter? He dropped to fifth overall. Colin screwed up again. He's now in 12th. He's just having a bad season.
| brainrally | 05-17-2002 12:22 PM |
Ford is really looking cruddy. They're down with the bottom-feeders, Skoda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi is just not a contender anymore. They seem to be getting left behind by everyone. Toshi (Subie WRX) is only a minute and 3/4 behind Francois Delecour (Mitsu WRC). The last two WRC cars listed are Mitsu and Skoda.

Stage 4:
Marcus
Tommi
Harri
Beotch
Petter
The Bull

Alister (Mitsu)
Francois (Mitsu)
The Mitsu drivers may redeem themselves. But it's too early in Stage 4 to tell. These are all the results so far. It can change because not all the WRC cars have finished yet.

Stage 5 and the front runners are still in the same position:
Pug
Subie

Subie
Ford (Go Carlos)
Marcus has a good lead, but not enough to ease off. Tommi is driving fairly steady. The time spread between 1st and 2nd is about 2 seconds greater than between 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. This is a tight race.
Carlos has another 20 seconds just to get into the mess. Otherwise, 1 driver's point, 2 maker's points. Juha could get a point for Hyundai.
Gilles Panizzi is 8th. He looks like he's out to prove he's not just a tarmac beotch.

Marcus Ligato in a Lancer Evo VII is pressing Toshi. Just over a second behind. The next car is 30 seconds behind Ligato, a Proton Pert. More Evo VII's after that. Production is not as exciting as WRC at this point, but still some excitement with a Subie and a Mitsu mixing it up. Go Toshi!

Stage 6:
Ligato has passed Toshi, and taken a 12 second lead of Production class. Hang in there dude!
Stage 7:
Burnsy passed Harri!! Tommi 0.4 seconds behind Marcus on stage, Burnsy only 0.6 seconds behind! No wonder he passed Harri.
Colin is still loitering in 11th, but he's close enough now that he could jump three spots by the end of the day, passing Loix, Martin and Panizzi. I would find it surprising if he didn't.

That, or the timing was screwed up by exactly one minute, because if you add 60 seconds to Gronholm's time, it looks like what you might expect for the stage.
Edit: Maybe not, since the time seems to be standing. The stage preview mentioned the possibility of fog, though not rain. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Look! Panizzi is in 6th! He's got something to prove, and he's set out to do it.
And McRae didn't waste time passing up to 8th place. He's got quite a gap to make up to pass Harri, but Harri's downward trend may make that possible. On the other hand, if the problem was mechanical, Harri should have that remedied by leg 2. And Colin has 55.5 seconds to make up to get past Gilles. Still have two legs left, so he can do it.

I would be surprised if Gilles does better than 6th, barring an error or problem for one of the front-runners. And unless Colin errs or has a problem, he's likely to pass Gilles. Can't tell what's happening with Harri, though. If he gets the problem remedied, he's likely to pass Gilles, too. But still, Gilles is showing determination and maturity in his driving. No problems, and running in 6th. He's not expected to do well on gravel, but I'd say he's showing potential.
Ligato is still in front of Arai, who is second in Production. Toshi seems to be going a little slower than a few of the Production drivers. Fortunately, he got himself a good gap at the start that has helped him keep from losing second, though he lost first.

That's Fantastic!!! Yesterday it looked like loud mouth...err...Gronholm was going to walk away from everyone. Damn I hope he looses. Hs comments, or at least the parts of his comments that were reported, makes him look like an arogant fool. And I thought Dicky was bad :)

Who said anything about TV? It was *reported* that in the past week or so, Gronholm publicly stated that McRae takes way too many risks, Makinen is no longer fast, and Burns whines and bitches too much.
Now, while all those things may or may not be true, to say THOSE TYPES of things in public comes across to me as being foolish. Espesically when one of them is on the same team! That stuff should stay behind closed doors.
When Petter jokingly tells the other teams "They better watch out" after Subaru has a good test somewhere, that is good ol' fashion trash talking, all in fun really. But when one driver tells another that he has lost it and has gotten slow, and tells another one how he shouldn't be driving, that's just being ignorant. Just my opinion of course.
Burns may have bitched about everything under the sun, but I don't remember him personally degrading other drivers much.

Well, Sainz just passed Solberg. :( Sainz is ahead of Solberg by about 9 seconds.
And now Gronholm is winning by 1.4 seconds.

Well, Makinen is out. It seems he rolled the car a few times. :(

last corner on stage 21, what a shame. :(
Petter is 10 seconds behind Sainz, they set equal times on stage 21 so its looking unlikely he will catch him in the last stage.
Yet again Marcus leads a Pug 1-2. This is one event i genuinely thought they would struggle, for them to take a 1-2 in Argentina is very bad news for everyone else, they are going to walk this years championship.

Never fun watching everyone else playing for second place, nor to have such an arrogant pair at the top.
Good to see you back here, John. :)

Marcus Gronholm has been excluded from Rally Argentina.Stewards have thrown the championship leader out of the event after deciding that Gronholm had received illeagal instructions on how to start his 206WRC when it failed to fire at Parc Ferme on Sunday morning.
The stewards' decision is as follows:
The stewards
- having received a report from the Clerk of the Cours informing that Crew No.2 has left the parc ferme at the start of Leg 3 pushing their car around 10 metres after the sign of the end of control zone being instructed on the spot by memebers of the Peugeot team about how to start the engine.
- having summoned and heard the entrant of car No.2 who admitted the facts
- having ascertained that the crew No2 had breached article 12.2.2 of the FIA Rally Gerneral Prescriptions
- after due deliberation
Crew No.2 is exluded from the event.
That all means team-mate Richard Burns has been promoted to overall winner and Peugoet has confirmed it will not appeal the decision.

Me Finnish, me sad.
First Ferrari now this.
Can't believe the judges, Marcus didn't even got any help. The car started with luck after several starting attempts.
Tommi must have the worst luck ever this season, eventhough it was his own mistake.
tony
EDIT: If you haven't heard already, Marcus WAS disqualified by the ******* judges. Marcus wasn't even heard about the issue. His effort was thrown away because he had had some advice from the team mechanics which is forbidden.
