My "lifted" and customized stock scoop

Well I originally saw the idea from 01G_WRX_02, so I decided to go ahead and try it myself, So it's a work in progress, but I just got the first attempt with bondo on and sanded and it looks like i'm going to have to add a little more and sand and then eventually paint it so here's the pics
Here's how it started...

and then here it is after the first cut...

and then I set some mounts and figured out how high I wanted the scoop to be and then... I took a picture...

Then I figberglassed around it to fill in the area that is gapped...

After this I wanted to make sure it didn't warp and would still fit, and I was curious to see what it looked like...

I dont think it will look right....
your going to end up having the flat spots where the riser areas are...
I would wrap that bad boy is some thick stretchy fleese, hot glue it down where ever it dosent have the contour you want. slap some resin on that bad boy and do your putty work.
donno, I could be very wrong tho and you could pull it off in the finishing...
let us know

yea i was going to wrap it in some t shirt material, like i do with the custom sub enclosures that i do but i thought i could pull it off this way, i think it's going to work, after the bondo it ended up turning out pretty well, i'm not home right now and won't be until tomorrow afternoon, but when i get home i'll try and finish it up and get the first layer of primer on get some pics out

cool cant wate...
I hate too seem like im trying to pimp the fleese/t-shirt idea but it is a great way to get smooth flowing lines without the 'chunkey' look regular fiberglass cloth usualy gives.....
I cant wate to see the pics.

another reason, that i just remembered thinking about before hand, was that the structure wasn't strong enough for holding any type of tension but it's going to work out i believe ;)

omg..
| disaster999 | 03-30-2006 02:38 AM |
that is exactly the same thing i want to do with my scoop! im taking a composite class and want to make the scoop taller as my project!
i was having trouble thinking of ways to rise the height and not remolding the base of the scoop but you just gave me the perfect idea! i might go ahead and mold a built in splitter in the scoop.
as for the structural part, ill be using a weaved fiberglass instead of the shards of fiber class you used which would give it more strength.
ill post up pictures of the process and finish product!

I've learned that hacking car parts apart and putting them back together = fun 99% of the time. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Also, kudos for the hack job. It never is easy initiating any sort of hack mod, but after you pass that point of no return, every moment becomes exciting.

there is one guy who did something exactly like this and it turned out to be a FINE looking scoop... anyone got the link?
| clbd39 | 03-30-2006 10:56 AM |
alright the update will bew coming today i'll be home in about 2 hours and i'll start working on the final bondo layer for small holes and missing areas then i will sand and take some pics, it is really fun though and just something new from building fiberglass sub boxes! lol
well disaster999 i'm glad i cold help, in one of my first ideas i was going to split it four ways and make it flow better but then i decided i could make it work just by moving it foward
basically i slid the scoop to match with the very front and the back will be a slowly inclining smooth look
the main reason i did this was for something to do, a new look, and because i have a carbon fiber hood (which is for sale) and i love the scoop on it but i decided i didn't want a carbon fiber hood on my car and wold rather go for HP rather than cosmetic so this is just a fun project for me i'll post some updates soon

you can buy a gallon of resin at Home depot, Sears, WAlmart, yes paint brushes work good to spread the resin around, i dont isn stead of using fiberglass get and old t-shirt and use that in place of your fiberglass. heres some site that might help you.

go to my cardomain site and I have my whole process and then another link to my old one that has other details about it
here's my subaru fiberglassing in my WRX http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2036429/5

and my fiberglassing project in a 99 RS http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2036429/7
my brother does a lot of fiberglassing so i get my glass from him, which is on a 200 ft roll, but for closer places o'reiley's has a good deal for 32 sq ft but you have to order it, for the RS we ordered 3 bags, it took 1 day for it to come in too, and then you can buy the resin from o reiley's too i think it's 31 bucks a bottle you will need atleast 2 for an average size box to hold a 12, you'll need to get what i call... "cheap brushes" because once the apoxy resin hits that brush it's going to begin the process of getting hard because the resin and hardener create a chemical reaction
so the list for fiberglassing includes....
lots of cheap brushes (1 inch usually works, cheap is like 1 dollar) probably 9-15 depending on how quick you are
tin foil and painter's tape
cardboard
cheap paint buckets or plastic containers
fiberglass mat, not cloth... it needs to be able to be torn apart and have filly ends, because when those overlap they will hold together better and create a stronger box
MDF wood
some sort of small wood pieces to set your ring mounts and so on
box of 100 or 50 cheap rubber gloves i think they are like 5 bucks for a box of them they are the ones you see in doctor's offices, cheap ones
spray glue, hot glue gun and glue sticks, t shirt material
and there may be more but i can't think of it right now
if you need help with it though i've been doing fiberglass boxes for subs for a good while and have practice so if you need advice send me an e-mail or pm or whatever!

im not saying yours is bad, i just made this to show you what other stuff i cut .

for the Teeth i cut the stock ones out and made my own out of small brass pipe from a hobby store you can buy it like 2-3 ft, the one i uses is 1/4 inch.
i made the pipe to the size i wanted and put a bend in them, then i filled the bottom of the tooth with solder and then put that end flat on a peice of wood and heated it up so that solder would make a flat surface, i then drilled the little hole in it for a screw.

when bending the pipe put a screw driver in it and bend a little at a time, if you dont you will just kink it and will have to start over.

ive heard someone on here mention the idea of mounting the scoop directly to the intercooler and clearencing it from the hood to make a "shaker" hood scoop out of it. just another idea that you could play around with if you felt like it.

did you bondo/fiberglass the inside too? I like custom modifications like this, although I don't know that I have faith that I would do as good a job as I might like. You should post some pics of the underside of the scoop, good work though!

i rank that up there with the pictures of zapata i see painted onto the tailgates of the trucks cruising the socal/san diego area. perhaps a brahma (sp?) bull on the door of your car might be appropriate.

well i think that it's dope that you have done something original. I've done a handfull of things that i haven't seen elsewhere and there are a lot of people that don't see a price tag and have a cut a paste 'that sucks' reply. so props, i think it looks good as well as one of a kind which definately earns points

well thank you all very much for the compliments, and that flattened side, yea that's my fault :( i shouldn't have been lazy in the start and i should've use t shirt material to start out, but after those pics were taken i went and took it off and filled some minor holes and re sanded and made it look a little better and repainted it, so it's a little better, however, yesterday on my drive back to school, it started to hail, 5 minutes of golfball size hail!!!! so i have some minor divets in it again... so i get to redo it in the summer, but i also got to do a drive by today and see my car on a glass window :P it looked pretty :) haha! but i'll go take some pics and put some of how it looks now

you will notice the scoop shakes alot more than the stock wrx scoop i noticed a big difference from my 05 sti scoop to the lower 06 scoop. I think the bigger 05 sti style like you are doing looks better IMHO
| clbd39 | 04-03-2006 10:35 PM |
buffster seriously why did you post that as a waste of time, i did it for the fun of it and a new thing, no hate on this thread!

Who ever has the red car with the black scoop.
You ****ed up your car, and it looks horrible.
It looks lop sided.
