I don't think This time-trialing ?? The rule book stated all cars start in 2 rows side-by-side from a rolling start.

Your right Tommy,
That picture is from our weekly Street Legal class [wheel to wheel]. As Tim said it is very safe and 98% dent free. In fact we are the only ice racing organization that has a strictly enforced "no contact" rule in place. There have been a rare ding here and there between people who drive over their heads. These same people always seem to drive cheaper cars [no surprise there right?]. We simply throw them out. There's no room in A.M.E.C.'s Bridgestone sponsored Street Legal classes for knuckleheads. As a result, we've got more 2000 and up cars coming this year than ever. We've also started an AWD class this year. Check out the good company we have rounded up already so far on this thread. ;)
They have a single time trial event, which is generally very safe other than some dented door panels and the like.

One of the Subie's got a dented door panel from a snowbank the first year I was there... and I'm sure that TT wound up with a little bit 'o cosmetic damage. Nothing from contact with anything but snowbanks, though.

Yes I was aware of those occurances, but that was at least three years ago, before we started mandating winter tires only. I still can't believe we had people showing up to an ice race with summer tires back then.

I just purchased a Stud sharpener 45 degree version, it fits a 1/4 20 bolt ok with probably just a little room left for a larger bolt but not much.

Seems that at this rate it'll take me about 10# of screws per tire and a lot of hours.

Wow, lots of work there. What I have found with tires like you have constructed above is that they work very well on clean hard ice. However, with no blocky tread to expell the snow, they are really inadequate in any kind of snow or slush that typically build up in the corners of an ice course. If you keep it on a clean line they'll be good.

Yup! :)
I think the most difficult task with these tires this year is finding a lake that actually has ice! :furious: Supposed to get up to 50 degrees tomorrow... I thought this was January?!?!?

Well speaking for A.M.E.C., we have had years where we didn't get out to race until February. No problem, we just double up on our weekends and race both Saturday and Sunday when we think we will have a shorter than normal season.
Don't kid yourself, it will get cold.

I competed against a 240SX that had drywall screw tires last weekend.
He kicked my ass (49sec vs. 56sec). Granted my bolts weren't sharpened & I only have 140/tire, but the grip he had was just amazing.
I noticed even with the bolted tires, if I got wide in a corner and off the clean ice, I lost a lot of grip. maybe not as much as the drywall screws, but then, I didn't have as much grip as they did to start with.
Given that we won't be racing for at least another 2 weeks, I'm going to dismount the tires & add another 100 bolts/tire.

Chad, you should spend that time just helping me - we can run my tires and codrive. It'll take me a LOT of time to finish this up.
How's the spacing compare to Tom's btw?

OK, that works for me.
Bring up the tires this weekend.
The spacing looks identical to Tom's tires.
Are you going to finish out to the edge of the tire?

I think I'll do more on the edge eventually, I wanted to go all the way around first and I need a longer screw bit to get at the edges well - hopefully a magnetic one too.
The re92's will definitely roll so I'm sure doing more on the edge will be useful.

Name is correct (which happens to be English by the way :o ) so I will take you off the "hit" list.
Look forward to some ice so we can use these tires for what we built them for :furious: and unlesh my 320WHP on the slippery stuff. :)

So how hard was it to get someone to mount these tires with a bunch of bolts sticking out?

Not a problem for me.
A local service shop did it. Cost all of $8 plus tax.
But mine aren't sharpened yet, so that may make a difference.

Yup. Local shop did mine too. I would also recommend sharpening the bolts AFTER the tire shop mounts them!
