Sno*Drift Pictures

Well this weekend was the 10th official sno*drift rally in norther michigan. 52 cars entered and this is a calendar event for rally america. We missed shakedown on thurs and part of fri because of school. Got in around 330ish, went down to the service park, cars just started to come in from their stages. Its really cool cause you get to see all the cars really close, talk to the drivers etc. After that we headed for the night stage...had the right directions, but got turned around by an official which told me to take a different route, which he explained the directions of. Well we get on this other route and its a bit rough, i have a 98 vw jetta so this thing is def no 4x4. Were driving along having a good time then i go on a light right turn thats banked, lose traction slide off into the powder snow, try reverse slide in even more. so now we are stuck, try and dig it out a bit and reverse, no luck, clutch was getting really warm and didnt wanna fry it. so we wait thinking hey tonnes of ppl should be coming through here for the rally...well 15, 30, 45 min later and no one....out of nowhere a couple really nice rednecks in a 4x4 jeep roll by and lend us a hand. only problem is the car is going nowhere fast and the rally starts in 10 min. so we ditched the car (whats someone gonna do back it out themselves), went to the rally with those guys, saw some great action(pics below), once that was over we went back and towed the car back out (2 miles) backwards. So that was my friday, now sat was a bit better, went to 4 stages and saw some really sweet driving and managed to not get stuck.
these are still unprocessed so bare with my friend

this guy rolled his car twice but managed to ge tout with only some scrapes on him. It's a wrx shell with sti and jdm parts on it. roll cage itself cost 10k but it probably saved his life. He was gunning a 7th place finish and a good chance of sponsorship, but he rolled it and that is that. Car was paid for out of his own pocket

Nice pics. This is the first rally I've been to, and had a blast. I signed up to find out what lenses you were using. Here's a few of the pics I took (resized, minor color adjustments). I was using a Rebel XT with the kit lens. Did you have a press pass? I was interested in some of the spots, but then would have had to stay in that area for the entire stage. Since we were trying to get to several different stages, that really wasn't an option.
*edit, I see I'm not allowed to post links to my pics since I don't have enough posts. If somebody would like to post the links for me, pm me.

I was shooting with a 30d and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I didnt have a press pass so i was limited to the spectator areas. Next year i hope i can get a press pass and get in on some sweeter shooting spots. I think with the kit lens its just too slow AF to keep up, also im not sure if the camera has AI servo which is key. I think i might have talked to you during the rally (i had yellow pants lol).
thanks for the comments guys

Rolled car is probably Robert Borowicz, good guy from Chicago who I rallycrossed with more than a few times. A ton of talented Polish guys down there with not a whole lot of money and bad luck kind of kills things. Piotr with a red GC8 a couple years ago had his car burn to the ground and I don't know if he's rallied since.

People don't generally talk about how they paid for their cars, but I can think of one guy at that event who we know did not pay for his car, and one other guy who might not have paid for his own car. Plenty of other people have "sponsors" but that money generally goes towards getting you to the event, if the sponsor even gives money rather than products. Don't let the stickers on the sides of other cars fool you, mere mortals all pay for their own rides - and if you can't afford to throw it out and walk away (after stripping the remaining valuable parts!), you don't rally! No need to feel bad for him - even with the car for sale, he knew the risk he was taking!
He was gunning a 7th place finish and a good chance of sponsorship, but he rolled it and that is that.
7th place won't get you a dime more in sponsorship than simply being a good salesman, talking the talk, and being in the right place at the right time.
Pressing on regardless is the important part, and he sure pressed on with a vengeance! Too bad he ended up DNF....

Very cool rally. I was pleasantly surprised compared to STPR.
We managed to see 8 stages, without a problem and could see 2 more but we decided to take off early on Saturday.
Big thumbs up for the organizers. Great job.
Yeah, Robert Borowicz rolled. Pretty sad as he was going really strong.
I already saw the onboard video of the crash as he was showing it to us by the car waiting for his brother with the trailer. He basically took a turn a bit too sideways and clipped the bank on the outside.
He won't be driving for some time until the car gets back to the operational status. He will be working as a crew for some friends that helped him bunch of times.
Anyway, my pictures are up so if anyone is interested here is the link:

That pic of Heath Nunnemacher going sideways in front of the fans is awesome. Really says "winter rally!"
It was a great event; good snow cover and good organization. The only recommendation I would have to the organizing committee (and which I will email separately) is to do a reseed at every service area. Road position at this rally means so much!
Shame about Borowicz. He was going really good!

Heath could be used as a perfect example of what Car #187 was saying. He is still a full-time student up here at Michigan Tech (where I teach), and we all know that students don't have a ton of cash to burn. He's established his priorities and scraped together enough to hit O'Neil rally school and put together a rally car.
The question we all need to ask ourselves is this: Is my mom cool enough to co-drive me? Heath's mom is!

I'd guess he'll be back at it.
Piotr burnt the old Tim O GC8 GrpN car at STPR. he sold his red car to buy that one I think, but bought it back and he's running it again, ran LSPR and also looks like he was at SD. here he is:

All of those polish guys could use some backing but none of them really have any. Robert running 7th overall is pretty damn good against all the big boys in a car he built on his own.
As for the classified part, I think the car has been "for sale" for a long time. Pretty much every polish guy I know has their car listed as for sale almost all the time. Greg Drozd's PGT car is the same way.
Glad to see Chris in his gti doign well towards the top of the regional results in 2wd.

Yep.
Heading out to breakfast and had to go into a downhill hairpin left.
Moving at about 20 in a 25 zone I turn the wheel, nothing happens, apply brakes, nothing happens, apply throttle, car does not turn. I literally turned to my passenger and said "we are going into the snow bank" to which he replied "O.K"
I hate it when accidents give you enough time to think about what is happening.

don't have the tires to trust it with enough speed to carry through the entire corner though. I've been bugging dave parps to put some pressure on nokian to make studdable tires to fit it ;)
I was not on stage 11 - that was the 'yotas

The tarps are required when specified in the supplemental regulations, which vary from event to event.
Tarps were not required by Sno*Drift's supplemental regulations.
Some teams choose not to use the tarps over snow or ice, because the tarp slides so easily that it is difficult to walk across.

Check towards the bottom of page 2. I got a couple sweeps.

Someone asked about tires. The Hakka RSI's were popular but only for the guys who couldn't get the Yoko rally snows. I saw lots of tire sponsored cars with other brands on em. It's always a crap shoot at the start and saw everything from Pirelli rally snow skinnys, Hakkas, Blizzaks, 'kooks, Michelin rally snows, etc. But it became clear that the Yokos were the ones to have and somehow most the top teams "acquired" them by day 2.
Found this pic on ss.com for the guy who asked above. :)
