options for Gt style wings...
1 Attachment(s)
Id like to know what the options are out there for these kinds of rear wings. Im not into the "park bench" hugest wing ever kinda think, and i actually dont like them on most cars, but i think they look good on an 02impreza. So far ive seen ones from syms, cusco, etc... and theyre all really expensive. What are some other ones out there? Some affordable ones maybe. Adjustability isnt nesacary. If possible, could someone post some pics, or direct me the right way?
thnx

any of the universal gt wings should work... doubt they'd fit the stock mounting holes though. One of the locals here just put a carbon fiber one on his RS.
CF + namebrand = expensive...
aluminum + namebrand = aren't too many to choose from

rims
what rims are those ?
| dwx | 04-05-2002 12:11 PM |
Those are OZ Superleggeras. As far as GT wings just pick up one of the import tuner magazines and you'll find people selling them. IMHO the only one that I like is the STi CF one, which is going to run you $1500+... You won't see to many WRXs with them, and don your flame suit if you do get a cheap aluminum one. :)
| willguidry | 04-05-2002 12:21 PM |
I personally don't like those wings.
IMHO they look too ricey. And we all know our cars don't look ricey. And to make our beloved subbies look ricey is a travesty.
However I DO love those OZ rims.
REAL nice.

To all you people that would ONLY put whataver the Rally car has on your car - and call ANYTHING else "rice" :monkey:
To anyone else that is willing to do something ALITTLE more original than just follow what Subaru 'says' to put on your car: I think those wings look fine. I bought one for mine about a months ago. I still haven't had the chance to paint it (I think I finally decided on the color). Also, they are FAR from expensive when not wasting your $ on CF.

As far as GT wings go, all th ones I've seen are really expensive. But, in my opinion, the best-looking one is the c-west one. You can see it on www.vividracing.com i think. :)

I love gt wings....oh wait...I don't drive a gt car  So everyone might as well take their 22b, rb5, wrc wings off since you don't drive rally cars

I've attached a pic of Shawfr1's car's butt. IMO, the only "GT style" wing that could possible grace the rear end of a scooby should be that beautiful, pricey piece of STi carbon fibre downforce:D.

IMO i wouldn't call it rice. The owners who puts those GT wings on his her car has different purposes i.e. looks, and performance.
here is a site for APR wings if interested.

Oh come one lads,
those wings are HORRENDOUS!
No one ever said you have to follow the rally image, but HELLLL-O!!
It's a RALLY CAR.
And you cannot deny that folks. Say it with me....RALLY CAR.
Not a ricey honda civic, or eclipse, or integra, or accent, neon, yaddayadda.
Nor is it a GT car. So why do it?
I mean, it's your style...and don't let anyone tell you NOT to, I am only asking why do you want to?
If you wanted that type of car, why not get a mustang, or something like that. But I don't like the GT wings at all. They are not my "style".
However, don't be offended when you drive up in a Subbie with a GT wing somehwere, and folk like us laugh. The ricer kids will love it, and you will be their god, but respect from the real drivers....out the window.
(By the by, I'm not a foremost expert on this stuff, but showed a buddy of mine the picture of the subbie with GT wing, and he laughed so hard he fell on the floor.(He's a diehard subbie buff, and mechanic at a subbie dealership)
Cheers

"but respect from the real drivers"
ofcourse god know's for SOME reason WILLGUIDRY thinks his opinion is actually worth more than anyone else's. AND that for SOME reason he is a "Real" driver, while everyone else isn't (now THATS something to laugh at). To that I just think that he's just a typical sheep without an original thought in his head.
I also find it more than curious that people say anything negative about the AL/CF wings in that really both those, and the "rally" WRX wing have quite a few common traits. They are both large/"obnoxious"/highly-visible wings that have a very large horizontal surface, and 2 tall vertical supports. Its just on the AL/CF wings the supports are closer to the center of the car, while on the 'rally' wing, they are on the extreme ends - to create a large (nasty) rectangle. Both wings on ANY street car are almost totaly for 'looks' and to differenciate their car from the 5000 other ones just like in on the road today.
Truefully, to ANYONE not "into" cars (the VAST majority of drivers out there), they probably would find BOTH wings quite "outthere". So don't give me this **** that the WRX is a 'rally' car and all that crap, cuz to 99.99% of the other drivers out there, our great little WRX is NO different than any other econobox out there. To them a big AL wing looks just as 'outthere' as that nasty BOX that the rally car has. Which brings it back to ONE thing - what kinda wing do YOU (the driver) like? Cuz thats ALL that matters.

HAzDAZ,
Not trying to flame you, as I said in my post, "don't let anyone tell you differently" if you want that wing. But anyone who SERIOUSLY can say they don't laugh their arses off when a civic or neon or accent drives by with a big GT wing like that is LYING.
And your right, most people think the 22B wing is excessive. But if you like it, or have need for it, then who cares. It doesn't look like a GT wing
It matches. It looks like it belongs to the car, ya know? The 22B wing was CREATED around the car. Not mass produced to throw on any car. You know what I'm trying to get at. The wing is made for ricers w/ civics and neons in mind. I bet these companies sell 80% to ricers. Not that thats bad or anything, cause if I owned the company, I could less who the money was coming from.
I think perhaps I have been turned off from this style of wing, merely for the fact that everyone I see with that style wing is a 16 year old ricer driving a civic si or 91 civic, neon, etc.
So i associate them as choader wings. :p
I don't mean to offend you HAZDAZ, I'm only throwing in my .02
If it isn't worth piss to you, don't reply. right?
No worries
Cheers

WILLGUIDRY: Actually, i'll laugh if I see a semi-rusted 10 year old civic with an exhaust buzzing like crazy thinkin that it can beat me. I've actually seen some late-model Jap-cars that actaully look more than nice with an AL wing.
"It matches. " <--- Ummm, you say that cuz you know what the rally car looks like. That rally wing actually DOESN'T match the look of the car at all, in my opinion. Hell, the front of the car has those huge round headlights. The sides has those cool bulging fenders, then you look in back and its this big BOX on top of the trunk- how does THAT match???
Also, I'll restate, that to 99.99999% of the people out there (probably EVERYONE, except some Scooby owners), think our car IS "rice". I believe that the content of my car was like 97% Japanese. It looks (kinda) like quite a few other econoboxes from Asia. TRYING to defend how our WRX is not "rice" to just about anyone that doesn't own one is totaly pointless. The term "rice" just drives me nuts cuz its like soo pointless (espesially since this IS the first forgeign car I have ever owned). To all the Scooby owners that LOVE to call other cars "rice" is like such hypocricy. I have a friend that had an old Nova witth a LT1 engine in it. ANY car made in Asia is totaly 'rice' to him - trying to defend our poor car by saying that its a Boxer engine and has AWD and is actaully more of a sports car is totaly pointless.
Really the ONLY thing that you said that pissed me off was your very cocky comment about "the real drivers". Ofcourse if you are from England, that just might be part of your people's "typically" annoying/stuck-up (without REASON to be stuckup) attitude.

Hazdaz, I understand the subbies are from Japan.
And maybe I should clarify what I term "ricey"
I know I don't use the term ricey as a means to describe where the car is manufactured. I mean, like...is it 16 yr oldishly (word?) "pimped". Like....is it a car that should NOT be pimped?
I.E Civics....period :p
Some cars are not MENT to be sport type cars. Civics were designed to be efficent, reliable cars. Well priced, solid commuter cars. Well, they are taking a turn for the worse. Civics are now laughed at as cars. (for the most part, I know I don't respect hondas anymore) except for the fact they are reliable. I am in an area where all the kids have civics, and they "pimp" or "rice" them out to be cars they are NOT ment to be. I call that ricey. I would call a focus all "pimped" out ricey...and laughed HYSTERICALLY at it. Same with a VW jetta or the like.
I just think spending 14K for a car, and putting 10K into it is STUPID. Plain and simple. And as for the "real drivers" I was referring to the teens that drive these cars. I don't care if your 18, you shouldn't be driving a car like a WRX or the like. Kids shouldn't be able to get their license till 21. All these kids now a days are trying to re-enact "Fast and the Furious". Quick story:
In the paper the other day I read a story about this 18 yr old kid that had his 19 yr old friend and 17 yr old girlfriend in his 01 HYUNDAI ACCENT (ok...HYUNDAI ACCENT) all riced out, going 90mph on a backroad....yes. 90mph. Well, he went to go around a moderate corner.....and the car continued in a straight line.
Suffice to say he killed his best friend and girlfriend. He was thrown 60 feet from the car, and struck a tree. He too is now dead.
:(
This is where all my anger comes from regarding ricers....
If your a young kid/or competant driver, driving with unadequate gear (I.E a car that isn't ment to do what your trying to do) you shouldn't be driving.
Anything that looks ricey...well...just erks me. I may be unfairly judging people in this regard, and if I offended you, I apologize.
But....the 22B wing doesn't look that bad!
At least it's not a GT wing ;)
Cheers

"I just think spending 14K for a car, and putting 10K into it is STUPID" <-- So then is spending $23K on a WRX and dropping $10K on it stoopid? Or how about all the Merecede's AMG cars or all the tuners for `Vettes and such? Is THAT 'RICE'?
"Civics were designed to be efficent, reliable cars" Well, the origin of muscle cars (in the 70's) and hot rodding (in the 50's) has the exact same roots.
Ya take a good and cheap and reliable car, pop in a high HP engine and bang you have a very fast car. In the past couple of decades, Civics have become the "generic" car, which is not much different than Chevy Novas back in the days. I just think its very stooopid calling a sooped-up Civic "rice" and not calling your 'sooped-up' WRX 'rice'. Like I said before, to the AVERAGE person, they BOTH are. So I personally think your way better off not using that word.
On the story about the kid with the Hyndia, I see NO connection to the word "Rice". You can take any freakin car out in the back-roads and go 90mph and kill yourself. Why wouldn't you just call that "stooopidity", and not "rice"??? Take a WRX and hit a tree @ 90mph and see if you going to survive. The KIND of car and the mods that that kid did to his car has NOTHING to do with the story. Teenagers think their invinsible no matter WHAT they drive, and ya don't need a fast car to kill yourself.
"the 22B wing doesn't look that bad" <-- your right, it looks WORSE.

Whoa lot of diffrent opions here. I just installed a arospeed aluminum gt wing on my 01Rs. The main thing is I like the way it looks. Im not going to knock anyone or tell anyone what to put on their cars, because its THEIR car. I just wanted to be a little diffrent then the usual suby crowd, and was originally going to buy a ver 5 or 6 wing, but it just seemed like to much of a chunk of fiberglass on the trunk lid.
I totally respect the guys who want their cars to look like they just finished the first leg of the argentina rally and the guys who dont care what people think and build their cars with all the things they want. So i guess fellow scooby owners and i-club members can laugh at my big bookshelf aluminum wing and thats okay cause far as i see it my car still rules in the turns, goes in the snow, mud, dirt, and makes hondas look bad and thats all i care about. I will probably never run rally or auto-x, i just want a cool looking car that gets me to work and turns a few heads.

Hillclimber is exactly right.
"So then is spending $23K on a WRX and dropping $10K on it stoopid? Or how about all the Merecede's AMG cars or all the tuners for `Vettes and such? Is THAT 'RICE'? "
Firstly, I would NEVER buy a 20K car just to put 10K in mods into it. (unless I was a millionaire) I would buy a better car than the WRX and smoke your tweaked WRX with my stock car. Makes sense no? Secondly, you NEVER see Vette's riced out. If they mod the car, they make it look classy. It may not be my style, but it doesn't look stupid.
HAZDAZ, your obnoxious, and you don't listen.
I was trying to be nice and explain to you why I felt the way I felt.
I have nothing more to say to you if you cannot agree to disagree and just have a touch more class.
Hillclimber, enjoy your new wing!
I still have my stock wing on mine, haven't decided which wing I will get. I like the 22B and sti wings, but wish there was something alittle different out there, not that it matters as I don't see many cars like mine where I live
:p
Cheers

:p
Cheers

OK, this thread is pissing me off, the thread starter was only asking where to get GT style wings, and you people turned it into a stupid offensive argument.
willguidry, I take offense in you stating that teens shouldnt have cars like WRX's. Well guess what, Im 17, my car is a 2000 RS, I reallize how lucky I am to have this car, but do not make a generaliztion against my age group. Yes there are many stupid teens out there, but guess what, that is not everybody. Can you honestly tell me that you haven't ever done anything stupid with your car, or made or mistake due to bad judgement. I consider myself very knowlegable about cars and respect them fully, I work on them, I am a porter for a dealership (they trust me with NSX's), and most of all, I consider myself a real driver because of the skills and knowlege I have taught myself. So before you say something, take some time to consider how ignorant it is.
sportysubby, I have also been thinking about a GT style wing (C-West GT= drool), so I thank you for attempting to start a helpful thread.

I own a Honda, but NOT a civic. I don't agree with the part that they are "commuter, ricey" cars if they are done tastefully. Have you ever seen civics with pure JDM N/A package like Jun, Spoon, Toda or turbo package like Top Fuel. Are you making fun of Mugen or Spoon aerokit? How is putting 12K on a 10K civic different from putting 12k on a 25k Subaru? It sounds like some WRX owners are having ego issues.
Regarding the "GT Style" spoiler, no matter if you call it ricey or not, it is still very popular in Japan. Look into an Option 2 magazine and you will see 7 of 10 sporting them. I personally do not like it, but hey it's your car. If you see a aluminum wing on a civic and think it's rice, then it's also rice on a WRX. If you don't think so, then it's not. :)

I was simply stating that I think it's rice. I don't care what you guys think. So why should you care if I laugh at someone who drives a "ricey" car. I was tossing in my .02.
Thats all.
I don't care if the look is huge in Japan. I don't live in Japan, nor would I ever want to step foot in their god-forsaken country.
Sure, they make excellent product, but as for their style over there, thats a hoot. I mean 30 yr old women running around with pikachu backpacks and digipets attached to their celly's???
 ..to that!
As for subyguy2,
I could care less if you think you are a good driver.
Your 17
I know a kid who just turned 20 this year. Been racing most of his life. Just bought an Integra...and I won't drive with him. Point being, you are young. You are at a stage in your life where you are not that great at making decisions. Hell, I was there...we all were. However I was never in the circumstances to put MY life or anyone elses in danger. I.E driving a car crazily.
I'm not trying to be a pr1ck to you subyguy, your at least on the right side of the fench with subaru's ;) But at 17, thats far too young. I'm not saying you cannot "handle" the car....I mean, there really isn't a car that any driver couldn't handle, not like a motorcycle or something like that, but kids want to party, then they drive, play fast and furious, do drugs, have NO commonsense yaddayadda. You know what I mean. That may not be the case with YOU per se. But I would say 99% of people under the age of 21 have this mentality.
And before you say it, yes there are people even up to their 40's that have no commonsense. And do all the things I mentioned above. But there should be a limit on the road to keep people safe.
Even if the DMV did something like the following:
Different stages of license..kinda like GT3A :p
So if you are under 18, you have a class A license and if you are caught going 10MPH above ANY posted limit, your license is revoked.
And the top stage, if you get caught over speeding limit, you are subject only to fines.
And they could make the tests WICKED hard. Like doing 180's in wet road/dry roads, quick stop braking, etc, etc...
The higher you want to go in licensing, the harder it is to get licensed.
Then I would NEVER question you. If you were 18 and whipped out a valid class C license or whatever I would say...hey...AWESOME. It's just a matter of safety, and if those teens are that mature, they would understand the fact that noones trying to pick on you all, it's just that the roads are always becoming a more dangerous place.
I mean, how many wrecked cars you see coming into the dealership you work at? I know theres at least 5 accident reports in my paper every day.
Be safe
Cheers
William

First, what do you consider a ricey car? IMO, cars are not ricey; it is the owner are ricey. So, IF 2.5 RS owners put altezza on, 2.5 RS are ricey cars? I don't get it
Why is Japan a "god-forsaken country"? Please elaborate on this. People in Japan tend to be very trendy, but not all. You are just making up assumptions that you see on TV. I suggest that you go to Japan. As a matter of fact, the people are much nicer than people here. Just my $0.2 :)

WILLGUIDRY: "nor would I ever want to step foot in their god-forsaken country." <--- Ofcourse this is the same person that said I was obnoxious. Hmm, how hypocritical. I believe you owe EVERYONE on this topic an explanation for this quote.
Oh, hey, WILLGUIDRY, being willing to 'aurgue'/'discussion' my point of view does NOT make me obnoxious - I DON'T sit and stay quiet when someones mouthing off opinions that I don't aggree with. I know that there are WAY too many "yes-men" out there (that will agree with soeone just to prevent an aurgument), i'm defintly NOT one of them.

Hey, I was the first person to say I thought the image of the WRX with that GT wing looked "ricey"
I am not some blind person that thinks subarus are the BOMB and they are the only car. Not by a long shot. I have followed the Team Subaru in Rally for a while now, and I wanted that car. I want my car to look like the rally car. Thats all. Thats why I bought it.
I also would like the Peugot and EVO but, that will be way in the future ;)
I agree with you completely that "ricey" is who you are. So, mathematics tells me.
ricey person + car = ricey car.
Thusly, a ricer, ricee, ricecar whatever
As for the Japan comment I don't owe any of you any explanations. So Hazdaz, :monkey:
SONofSAM
That may be, but in general, I have found the majority to not be true. Although when I was at the DMV the other day a vary nice japanese young lady ( was very cute I might add
;) ) gave me a lower waiting number as she had two from earlier in the day. She saved me almost 2 hours in waiting time. She was VERY nice, and did the bashful japanese giggle...which I found very adorable.
I think the population is the thing that scares me the most. I mean, a little island with that many people?
ACK!
Cheers

Ok, now that this thread has been flamed for a good 2 pages, lets see what we've come up with, almost nothing... except alot of opinions on what is and what isnt rice. Frankly i dont care what u think is rice or isnt, i asked about a kinda of wing. God help the person that does something original with his WRX, right? If u'd like me to stoop to the same, is it or isnt it, rice tackticks, then take a look at many JDM subarus. U will find plenty of well designed, functional, and well made GT spoliers. U may not agree with the JDM trend that is comming over the aftermarket world lately, but i like it because i think it has some serious style. Most cars i see emulating that style has a great "racecar", fully functional, look, which i hope doesnt get destroyed and played out by people trying to cheapin it up, like what happens to most trends, but what can ya do?
Ok, so lets end the argument right here, k guys?
More importantly... has anyone checked out parts at www.japanparts.com ?
They have an OEM subaru GT wing there:
@ #1011-0200412 SUBARU TRUNK SPOILER Wing type
107,800 yen, what is that in dollars, and something tells me the freight will be alot, but who knows...
now if subaru themselves, not to mention every top dog JDM wrx tuner, make a GT type wing for the WRX, how can it possible be rice? Cmon people, lets all get along...

Dude, thats not a bad lookin wing. My recommendation for you would be not waste your $ on CF (unlesss thats what your into). AL weighs next to nothing to begin with, and its not a structural element, so you don't need the CF strength.
Check out this page:
http://www.spoilerdirect.com/aluminumwing.htm
I bought mine from them and their prices are really good, pluss I got free shipping (not sure if they are still doing that promotion).
----
One last thing I have to ask WILLGUIDRY... You ended all your posts with "cheers"... and that last post you wrote, you sounded drunk. So does that mean that you were having a few pints when you wrote all the previous stuff? I think it might explain alot

I still don't like that wing, however I will agree with Hagaz that while the CF looks better than AL, I couldn't justify paying the hefty price for something that is not structural. However, if you have the money, why not do it right. Thats what I always say anyhoo.
Hazdaz,
No mate been at work all day....last post was after I got out of the place, so I tend to let my anxiety go once I leave. I tend to be easier going when not at work, and less prone to picking fights. ;)

1) do all the people who say that subaru's should only use wrc wings and not gt wings drive rally all the time?
2) altough the subaru is known mostly for the wrc, in japan they use a lot of subaru's for gt racing and street racing. ( just look at JUN and CUSCO).
3) if the subaru is a "rally car" then how come people don't have anything against body kits which clearly makes it impossiable to do rally driving?
4) why the hell do you people have the nerve to tell people what they should do to their car?!!!!!!
and before start saying anything bad, i just want to say that i have been driving a subaru for 6 years now and i know what i'm saying.(sti v.3 and a 2002 wrx).

just for the record, although you think that hondas are meant to be econobox and should not be treated as a sport car, i suggest that you do some research and you will know that honda is a sports car just by looking at the way the engine works. and also if hondas are not sport cars, how come most of the fastest drag times are made by hondas and also other races in japan?
if you would like to know more pm me so i can help you out ( i live in new england)

i completely agree with you. the wrx is not a rally car. many people think it is cause its advertised that way and theres a factory supported wrc VERSION of the car. hell, the cusco gt impreza is also factory supported, so why isnt it considered a gran turismo car? some argue that the wrx is a rally car because with some mods, it can be rallied successfully, which is quite true. but the wrx can also be raced on tarmac quite successfully with some mods (this is proven by gary sheehan, who btw, has a gt style wing on his car **:eek:OMG:eek:**). one can rant about a gt style wing on a car that wont ever need one, but a wrc spoiler on a street going wrx is just as pointless if not more due to its weight, even if it was designed for a _professional rally_ version of the car. heck, theres gt wings designed for the wrx too. it shouldnt be the gt wing being labelled as r*ce (<- i hate that word), it should be the image the owner is trying to portray. if the same car that was called rice for having a gt wing had the subaru wrc overhanging spoiler, it would still be r*ce for the same argued reasons. it all boils down to personal opinion, and thats something nobody should force on others.
i wish this club was more pro-choice and MUCH less anti-r*ce
edit: and to add to snir's comment, the fastest civic quarter mile time is in the 8 second range. the impreza? 10 flat, and thats with the older body style which is lighter by a couple hundred pounds :D

edit: and to add to snir's comment, the fastest civic quarter mile time is in the 8 second range. the impreza? 10 flat, and thats with the older body style which is lighter by a couple hundred pounds :D

Look if you want one check out Primitives site (www.get-primitive.com)
Personally i dont mind that wing, but if you listen to what other people say, what mind of your own do you have. Personally i would only get it for the purpose of down force. Not everyone can afford ans Sti cfb wing. I thought this forum was dressup and style, so live!!!

Reasons why the i-club has suck
Guess the gt wing doesn't fit the cookie cutter i-club sheep mold
If I ever get a wing on my car it'll be a gf wing...I think the rally type wing looks awful on the new age imprezas. Especially the box hanginf a foot off the trunklid wrc wing. But I don't care what you sheep think, I'll get what I want and won't be a follower like 99% of this board is

how would you like it if I came over to your house and made fun of your car, I dont think you would like that now would you...so please guys, think about what you post before you do it....now back to my point....
I actually like that gt-style spoiler, and I started a thread on it yesterday....I've found a few companies that sell it, and the thread is located here

those wings are HORRENDOUS!
Cheers

So William I take it you have never seen the Cusco JGTC car then? Or the JUN WRX's? Hello, there is a hell of a lot of Impreaz GT cars out. The WRX it not just a rally car.

This is why the i-club has suck. People just can't keep their stupid opinions out of a thread. Guess no one has seen all of the impreza race cars with gt wings. I prefer my car not to look like every other subaru out there, hence the better looking gt wing

How dissapointing... :(
I just joined today. I see this kind of pointless bickering all over. It looks terrible for the whole group.
I personally like the lines of the Impreza with a rear wing. The OE one is OK, the STi one ROCKS (as it should for $1500+) and many of the AL ones are just fine.
APR has new ones out this year...

I really like these, and I sell a TON of them ($350 shipped). I plan to put one on my car soon.
Anyways, to each his own.
