Rally de France!! (corsica) - talk about it here! part 2

Dolphin Overton 10-20-2003 02:27 AM

Man that felt good to see Petter win after last rally's dissappointment. He kicks ass. The tire choice quote was a classic.

anyone see the Goodwood festival with petter doing doughnuts while hanging out of the car?
Idjiit 10-20-2003 08:28 AM

Oh my god.

Petter won? This is definitely not the result I expected to wake up to this morning!

YOU RULE, PETTER!!

That thing on the other side of the car is Petter hanging out with his fist in the air.

Am I mistaken, or...?
I watched the Speed Channel broadcast last night. I got the definite sense that Ralph Shaheen, Penny Mallory and Nicky Grist downplayed Solberg's driving efforts until the very end, after the race was won and they gave their analysis for Catalunya.

You cannot take away from the SWRT mechanics' work overnight Thursday into Friday to get his car in driving shape, but the announcers almost made it sound as though the tires won the rally rather than the driver and his choice of tires.

Maybe I should have taken a nap before watching the program and it would have made better sense to me.

WRXedUSA has a point as well: is Corsica not a safe place to travel? I know there was a French referendum on granting it greater autonomy this summer, which did not pass. Are tensions still very high? I enjoy watching this rally and the scenery on the island is just spectacular; I'd love to travel there someday, rally or no, but am not too keen on the idea of being confronted by violence.

the car that Petter's driving wildly in the photo was given to him as an x-mas gift by Prodrive after winning rally gb. how cool is that?!

go to wrc.com and look through the vids for one of carlos forgetting the time card. you see him come flying up the hill, slide it sideways while the co-driver jumps out and runs to TC!!

no matter what comentators say, you simply can't down play what petter phil accomplished. petter was really shaken up after the crash thursday, saying it was the 1st time he really got scared from an "off." and then to come back, make the work, make the tires work, and win the race is amazing!

I wonder if WRXed means rough as in pavement. Precious little(parts of Marseille, Paris, Montpellier) of France is rough in the sense of having to worry about violence, etc.

What a drive by Solberg! Certainly, Loeb and Martin having issues helped Solberg a lot, but I think that given the weather, he would have done quite well anyhow. Awesome drive, and I love seeing Solberg win, because like M. Schumacher, he REALLY enjoys it.

Is it just me, or is there more maturity accompanying Solberg's pace? Oh, and here's another question...why didn't anyone raise a stink about Solberg's getting pace notes help from Subaru, that enabled him to know where particularly treacherous parts were. Is that legal?

Regarding Mr. Burns...like California, can we initiate a recall petition? What a whiner. First, it was "I can't drive this car with these pace notes," and now it's just general slowness, and he seems rather carefree about being as slow as he is. Ridiculous. The only good thing about this is that he won't (hopefully) win the Driver's title. Nobody who doesn't have a single rally win should win the WDC. Period, the end.

What was interesting was all the information that Burns was getting, and then when they switched to Gronholm's in-car, how comparatively little he was getting. I don't speak his language, but his co-driver was hardly saying anything.

I understand, I've taken a few trips to Paris and the surrounding countryside and felt perfectly safe. I was wodnering whether there was any separatist violence along the lines of the Basque attacks that happen from time to time.

Maybe there are Corsican equivalents of "good ole boys" who like to shoot up road signs?

edit: I guess this answers my question:

http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200307/07/eng20030707_119580.shtml
The Mediterranean island of Corsica, plagued by decades of separatist violence, rejected a French government offer of limited autonomy by a wafer-thin majority in a referendum on Sunday.

President Jacques Chirac said he regretted the outcome and released a statement saying the French state would continue to help the island and combat any violence.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who fought hard for a "Yes" vote in a part of France that was meant to be first to benefit from wider decentralization plans, said the "No" camp won with a score of 50.98 percent, versus 49.02 percent for the "Yes" side...

Corsica, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, has been plagued for decades by Mafia-style racketeering as well as the constant, low-intensity, violence of rival separatist groups.

The latest cycle of violence began in 1975 when Chirac was prime minister. Two policemen were shot dead when they tried to flush gunmen out of a cave.

Guerrilla groups then launched a campaign for independence that most of the island's population of about 270,000 do not support, but dare not openly oppose.

Tourists, drawn to the turquoise seas and picture-book beaches, are a major source of income on an island otherwise dependent on state aid and civil service employment. They have been unaffected by violence usually directed at state symbols.
All quite legal and normal. Not only do they have a recce, the "gravel crews" run through the stages to make additional notes/reports about changed conditions due to previous runs AND they are also team members out on the stages measuring ground temp, precip, split times etc.

I wouldn't say the maturity in Solberg's driving is new. We saw it at Rally GB last year. He was faster, tidier and with better lines than Marko. Marko (from the outside at least) drives like Colin McRae.

Awesome!!

Petter is by far the most exciting driver to be a fan of. Talk about pushing when it counts!
bemani 10-20-2003 02:31 PM

Petter 1st and Carlos 2nd in the next 2 rallies would rock :)
Rain in Catalunya!
kgb 10-20-2003 02:45 PM

Haven't manage to catch the WRC this year, and the first I caught on TV was gem ! :D From 8th or 9th to 1st in just one day - with help from others as well...

Yes, definitely more rain for Spain - we want a WRC champion in Petter this year!!

Thanks, Glenn. I still laugh at Solberg's incident where he's driving, and suddenly, an OZ wheel, released from the bondage of his chassis, whips by going faster than Solberg was.

"And I didn't hit anything!" he says.

Did you guys see Markko's crash from in-car. 'Beef' could only muster a " Ooohhhhh Markko..........!"

It looked like a pretty scary crash, just glad they are alright
Rattler 10-20-2003 04:38 PM

Thats not Marko's worst. He really vaulted his car off into the woods a few years back. It sounded like he had some flight-time with it too. He was really stuck back in behind a bunch of trees. I would have to dig up my RallyXS to find out which one it was. I think it was OZ or NZ rally.

Anybody know what one I am talking about?

I meant ROUGH roads and ROUGH country politically. The WRC travel guide advises not to "sample the flavour" of the island as you dont know where you will end up, or whos car you'll be gagged and bagged into.

The tarmac in some areas of the Island looked bone crushingly rough.

Whatta great win for Petter!!

The Inmarsat Star of the Rally award was presented to the Subaru Technicians. And well deserved at that!

For their award, they got two magnums of champagne (one more then usual :D) and $5,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. They chose an education fund for the children of Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman.
That's VERY cool!!!:)

Wow, thanks WRXed. I was just looking at some of those narrow roads, and having flashbacks to the year we stayed in this small mountain town in the south of France. Some of the locals clearly thought they were Sebastian Loeb, as they took a racing line through the corners, oncoming traffic be hung. Thank the stars for a rental, and the collision coverage.
