Smooth, wide, undulating gravel stages enable drivers to reach breath-taking speeds of more than 200kph, while the numerous yumps, the famous Finnish jumps that feature throughout the route, demand the ultimate in confidence and precision driving. Technically, the event is a difficult one. Jumps can launch a car 50 metres through the air and lead directly into blind crests and sixth gear corners. Absolutely not! He's good but he also has good luck and the best car. Just look at Gardemeister, he does his, what, 2nd or 3rd WRC and beats Grnholm on some stages in Germany in a Cittro. Though I think Ford should've kept Toni in Ford instead of Mikko but rumor has it Mikko brought some sponsor money with him to Ford and Toni couldnt bring any. The Subaru World Rally Team has completed a trouble-free Rally Finland shakedown, with Petter Solberg completing a total of three runs through the 3.76km stage and Chris Atkinson seven. Chris recorded the second fastest time with 2mins 04.8secs, while Petter was third quickest. :)

Solberg is using the car that they rebuilt in Germany. It's on it's 3rd engine in a weeks time.

Should be interesting.................or not.
psg 08-18-2006 01:29 AM

Eight stages today--144.39 km of competitive roads. It's looking like SWRT is going to be in the hunt this weekend, barring another grenaded engine, gearbox failure, kangaroo, rogue spectator car, poor Pirelli compound, or rock on the final stage.

Gotta think positive!
Jay911 08-18-2006 02:14 AM

Listening to WRC+ now and waiting for the action to start. Sucks that they split up Ouninpohja a couple years ago after Petter averaged 130+ thru there.
ralliharri 08-18-2006 05:51 AM

Grnholm winning all the stages so far (4 before lunch) with Hirvonen 2nd o/a, Petter in third.

Yeah, how do you get signed up for WRC+? I've been all over that site and trying to figure out how to get a membership and still haven't figured out where I need to click...

Is there any other place to get rally coverage online other than www.wrc.com and www.swrt.com ?

Mads is driving a Subaru WRC (S9, I think). Juha Hanninen is driving a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC.

At this point I just want Gronholm to hold off Loeb. Gronholm is the only who can keep this championship interesting.

Petter getting a podium finish would be nice also, but finishing the rally would be good too. :D

Some serious duelling going on between the drivers for positions

Day 1 Results overall as of SS7:

2. Loeb - Citroen - 1h05'29"8
3. Hirvonen - Ford - 1h05'42"6

hopefully he can take advantage of the Gronholm/Loeb duel

Solberg is closing in on Hirvonen.
psg 08-19-2006 01:50 AM

And Petter Solberg retires 700m into the first Ouninpohja stage, SS11. No injuries or something to that effect.

Atkinson only has 3rd gear, but is attempting to make it through the stages for mid-day service.

EDIT: OK, this is even more weird. Solberg is apparently "off the road" (e.g. crashed) 700 meters BEFORE the start line for SS11. He's out for the day, if not the rest of the rally. Solberg and Mills are OK.

Loeb hit a rock on Ouninpohja and lost a pile of time to Gronholm. Looks like quite a few others have hit it, too.
ralliharri 08-19-2006 06:16 AM

Grnholm, Loeb, Hirvonen, H. Solberg and Galli are top5 in SS13, Urria, separated by only 5 1/2 seconds! Grnholm leads Loeb by 47 seconds, Mikko is 32 seconds behind Loeb, best Subie is Flodin in 13th place, and in 14th place, next best Subaru driver, Anton Alen, son of legend Markku!
ralliharri 08-19-2006 07:56 AM

from rally-live.com
After another service break, the drivers are back to compete in the longest stage of the race: Moksi-Leustu.

At 41-km, this stage is also one of the favourites of the drivers, with a great variety of challenges, including wide and narrow roads, interesting corners, jumps and very high speed sections.

Ford achieved another one-two result in SS16, Marcus Gronholm taking the stage victory followed by his teammate Mikko Hirvonen (+11.3).

Sebastien Loeb (+13.6) was close to the Ford drivers' rhythm but had to settle for third place. The Frenchman who lies second overall is now over a minute behind the leader.

Gigi Galli continued his good work with another solid performance. The Italian set the fourth quickest time, 5.8 seconds faster than Janne Tuohino in fifth position.

OMV Peugeot Norway drivers Henning Solberg and Manfred Stohl achieved the sixth and eighth fastest times respectively, only separated by Jussi Valimaki in seventh place. With this result, Stohl moves in front of Matthew Wilson in the race standings, taking ninth place away from the British driver.

Jan Kopecky and Jari-Matti Latvala completed the top ten.

I am sorry, but is it just me or does the above comment regarding Loeb's talent seem devoid of any pragmatism? First off, the Citroen Xsara is not longer being developed. As in: there is not much performance to get out of it anymore at this point. So, inherently, it is an almost 2 year-old car battling a new Subaru and a newly developed Focus. How can you peg the advantage to just the car? Furthermore, by reading the stage results and time sheets for the ongoing rally, it is rather obvious that Gronholm is beating him. So, should we then attribute his success solely to the Focus and disregard his driving ability? Of course not! I also don't think you can be just lucky so many times. You can definitely "create" your own luck by being consistent, having a clean driving style and other qualities that are just traits of a talented driver. Let's give credit where it is due. One does not equal a 26 WRC victory record without talent. Especially when it took king Carlos 15 years to accomplish, and only 5 years for Loeb...

Mikko took his first stage win in Jyvskyl at SS18, ahead of Bosse and Loeb. Subarus come in at 11 through 13th places O/A, led by Anton Alen.
