Peru Pro Roll-Call
Who's gonna make it?

#44 STS, this will be my 2nd event this year in my own car. We'll see if I can get back up to speed. teh cibic is a bit different from an 85 reynard or z06.

i bow to you, your car whoredness!!!
mccanixx 05-31-2006 11:42 AM

I'll be there. :D

I have to be my car and trailer is sitting out there from last weekend.

Now, where to get enough water to wash it when I get there. If everybodys' sprayers are empty. You'll know why. ;)
jcroy66 05-31-2006 12:05 PM

Phil and I will be there. Plan is for me to wash my car tonight, after my Weight Watchers meeting. It's filthy. Guess that's what happens when you run an Evo school in the rain.

And Greg, if I find my sprayer empty on Saturday or Sunday, I'll be sure to fill your sprayer with a "special blend" of fluids. I bet you'd prefer the odor of water on your tires and intercooler, but who knows, maybe the stickiness will help. :)

Oh hey, everyone, any requests on beer, tequila, rum, etc? I'll be bringing at least one bottle of tequila (Gran Centenario aejo) with me. Perhaps our bottle of Patron too, for comparison. :) But since the Mexico City Wal-mart doesn't sell Patron and so it'll be harder for me to replace, I might not. Probably some bottles of Subaru Simcoe Ale. But I'm also planning to head to the brewery tonight or tomorrow to see if I can find ESB or java stout for Mr. Wong. Not sure what all they have in the cooler right now, I didn't think to look last night. :( But anyone else have any requests?

Quiet you, unless you're gonna try and come out for a co-drive. I bet there be a drop out or 2. And yes I have teh california duster. I use it in grid as pyhcological war-fare. You know it works on you. You're all like:  , he's not really, cali-dusting his car :furious: . And I'm all like: :D yes I am :p you know dust creates drag  , and adds weight :p .

Jen,

Evo school huh. Kudo's, I really want to do one. Very badly, I could have really used some mental imaging last Sunday. Every time there's on close I'm to late on the trigger.

What's this Java Stout. Is it any thing like Guiness, but more coffee like. Because if it is  I like my beer dark and bitter, sounds perfect.

You can fill my sprayer up with that.

For you east coasters who travel down I-80 to get to Indiana you are more than welcome to stop off at our place on Thursday night for beer and a place to crash that's only about 4.5-5 hours from Peru. We're less than a mile from the I-80/I-71 exit. I know most of you probably drop south and take 70 across but the offers open if you're interested.
j-rho 05-31-2006 07:28 PM

Hmmm, looks like most of the fast east-siiide STS'ers will be there. Any predictions anybody?

Anyway, I'll be there, probably getting the usual beating in SS. And I doubt that I'll find time to polish the cone marks off my car, so it's still going to look like hell. I promise to clean it before Milwaukee! :D
ChrisDP 05-31-2006 10:27 PM

I'll be there, green STS Civic... NOT Mike Louie's car... or Jeff Cawthorne's car... my own green one, lol. Sean O'Gorman will be co-driving my car. I need to see about making a number change, as I have magnetics for 97/197 or well, 79/179. The 71/171 thing is an ixnay after my extra 1's got killed recently.

jcroy66 06-01-2006 09:23 AM

I'm thinking leave around 7 am-ish. Perera and Sean O'Gorman are planning to caravan with us too. If you're planning to stop around this area anyway, you should DEFINITELY spend the night - silly to pay for a hotel! We have a nice comfy guest bedroom with a queen size bed just waiting for guests! :)
Corey 06-01-2006 10:08 AM

My "hotel" is the back of my Tahoe at a rest stop on I-80... I figured I would be back on the road by about 6-7AM. Give me a ring in the morning when you guys get on the road, if we're close I'll join the caravan.

TheWRX 06-05-2006 08:20 AM

Well, looking at the bright side, it was much better than Mineral Wells. Even though that didn't take much. Mineral Wells never would have finished the same day with 200 participants.

And as annoying (and unacceptable) the delays are, let's not forget that ProSolos had more severe problems 2-3 years ago. Did everybody forget about all the wrong times and results? At least the times that are recorded seem to be correct now.
XeviousR 06-05-2006 10:01 AM

Indeed the ShimmySideways STi broke a rear axle on Sunday. I have in-car video of it but can't bare to watch it. The grip made wheel spin at launch very difficult. Anyone know an alternative to the $400 dealer replacements? Something tells me that my dealer won't be willing to turn this in on warranty.
PhilC 06-05-2006 10:01 AM

Back at work on another Monday morning. Not such a good Pro for us. Great thing about a Pro Solo is how many people, some of whom you barely know, are willing to offer a ride when something goes wrong. Oliver's second launch on Saturday afternoon something in the rear end snapped. He pulled into impound and we drove a few circles after checking that it wasn't a problem with the axels or driveshaft, that noise isn't normal and the wheels are acting like we've got a locking diff in there. Went back to paddock and pulled the rear diff. Opened her up and found a pile of shavings on the magnetic drain plug. One of the planetary gears was completely bald and the other had a couple of teeth missing. Oh well, at least it's easier to change than the transmission we blew three weeks ago.

I really want to thank everyone who offered rides to us, that includes but is probably not limited to Billy, Corey, Craig Wilcox, Greg Wilson and especially to Greg McCance who I got a ride with. And to Matt I'm really and truly sorry for stealing your ride, we honestly thought you had gone home and no one knew where you were 10 minutes before STX pulled to the line so Greg offered me the ride.

Greg's car is setup pretty wildly different from ours, he uses the Sorter style alignment out back so it was a bit different for me to drive. I did manage to get back down to just below my dirty times from Saturday afternoon which made me pretty pleased. Enough to move me back into 5th place only .056 behind the Mini or Craig Wilcox. Out of the trophies but at least I got to take 12 runs over the weekend.

Considering I started Saturday in 1st place with Billy running dirty and felt that I could have kept it within a few tenths of Billy if I hadn't had my head up my ass Saturday afternoon I think the event turned out as well as we could have hoped for, at least as far as results go.

Jen drove Billy's STS car in STX on Sunday and fell in love with it. Big old smile on her face after every run. "It's got torque".

I was there in my 245 series Hoosier road race tires, JDM Pink springs equipped #4 Street Mod STi. My first Pro event. I need more tire, and better suspension for sure!

Despite, finished in second place a tenth behind Jennifer Merideth out of 4 people in SM. I had a blast, and met some great new people. Off work today, recovering.

Sorry to hear about the broken BSP axle!
jcroy66 06-05-2006 11:44 AM

Huge thanks to Billy for the ride! :) Phil's right - I loved driving that car. :)

And thanks to the tons of people who offered up rides. And to my huge pit crew helping me change tires, numbers, contingency stickers, etc on Billy's car and on Greg's car. I know I'm going to miss some people because there were so many of you! But off the top of my head, Alex, Angie, Greg, Billy, Corey, Jason, Sean O'Gorman, Craig Wilcox, Doug Gill (who marked all 4 sets of tires as they came on and off). I know there was someone else who told me they'd run over with a second impact gun, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was! :( Karen, who helped keep everything straight in impound for us! :) And who was awesome, helping cheer me up Saturday afternoon when I was so discouraged after watching my car pull over to a stop during the 2nd consecutive autocross.

Huge apologies to Oliver, who flew up for the event but only got 5 runs. :(

Also, I think I "owe" 7 shots for my weekend's cones. I had 4 cones listed for Saturday, but on my DNF run, I took out at least another 4 cones. Plus, I think I owe a couple extra for somehow completely forgetting the last cone in the slalom and just straight-lining it to the turnaround. :) I was pretty amused by Phil's "Jen just put down an intimidation run of 33.9!" (which IIRC was either the fastest run of STX to that point (or at least on the same tenth of a second as the fastest)). Till I learned why the turnaround had felt so far away. "Nuh uh, I did not straight-line the slalom!" "Yes, you DID. You hit the 2nd and 3rd cones in the slalom, then just straight-lined it." "No, I hit the 3rd and the 4th, didn't I? OHHHH. I guess I DID straight-line it. D'oh!" :)

corey, you sell yourself short. GREAT driving! seriously, i had so much fun running against you and the rest of the guys in STS. i might have to reconsider my other plans for '07.

my biggest disappointment of the weekend was not being able to back up the "phantom cone run" time and getting into the challenge. i wanted some more cracks at that course! 2nd place to guys like corey doesn't really feel like loosing to me.

nate - fastest on one side. again. what's this, four in a row? if it weren't for coning away winning runs or not being able to put together one side, i might actually be good at this pro solo stuff!

That's awesome!! :) And you're always welcome to crash at our place. :) We thought about you on the way home, whether you'd need somewhere to crash on the way back, but we figured you were probably going to try to make it all the way home Sunday night or at least a lot farther than Cleveland.

Jeremy, thanks. I was just disappointed we couldn't find a replacement diff Saturday night. We could have gotten it in in no time and gotten the car running for Sunday. Oh well. :(

solo-x 06-06-2006 09:56 PM

yes, chang does come quite well prepared. we even had plenty of fresh water on board to bail us out of a somewhat serious coolant leak somewhere on the back of the head on the tow rig. the cars are covered in anti-freeze, but we made it home with only the inconvenience of having to stop and add water. we knocked over a wally world monday morning and put some radiator stop leak in it and the problem went away. we only went through 7 of the 35 gallons of water chang had with him. :o
PhilC 06-06-2006 10:47 PM

New diff went on the car tonight. Two minute test drive doing laps around the round-about at the entrance to our neighborhood looks like everything is good except our neighbors hearing and tempers from me test driving the car without an exhaust on it. We're ready for DC and again I want to thank everyone who helped and\or offered us rides when we had problems. It's the things like that which make me glad we run the Pro series and have gotten to know everyone.

Sam's courses for this Pro were awesome IMO, fun to drive even if you were offline but VERY rewarding if you were online. You could leave a lot of time sitting out there and not necessarily know where it was if you goofed on just one of the turns on the way back.

As silly as it sounds I may start carrying a spare rear diff to events from now on. Seems weird considering that I think Josh and us are the only ones who have roached a rear diff on a STX WRX so far but I'd like to have one and be able to swap or offer it to someone in need if the situation comes up again. The tranny takes too long to swap between heats but we could have swapped the new diff into place and run our own car on Sunday in 45 minutes time.
mccanixx 06-07-2006 08:13 AM

Glad you're back up and running Phil. What did you find out about axle "clips"?

I'll see you and Jen in DC.
PhilC 06-07-2006 08:36 AM
Glad you're back up and running Phil. What did you find out about axle "clips"?

I'll see you and Jen in DC.
There are clips inside of the diff that engage the ridge on the splines of the axel near the tip. According to the exploded parts diagram of the differential the clips are actually part of the diff unit and do not have a part number of their own. I've now taken a look at Matt's pictures of his diff and he does have the clips which means something else is wrong and not letting the axel engage, or letting his axel pop out too easily. When I was putting the new diff in last night I couldn't get the passenger side axel to pop in so I tried using a hammer and screwdriver on the collar of the axel. That collar slips, I noticed it happening so could tell that even though it -looked- engaged it was actually not. I got the collar back into it's proper place and finally got the axel to pop into place. I'm kind of thinking that might be what happened with Matt's car, hopefully we can figure that one out and get him back on the road by this weekend too.

For those who are curious the damage had we gone with a new diff would have been $1120+ and to rebuild the parts that are broken and replace all of the bolts with new was ~$615 (parts cost only, me doing the work). Yep, near half the cost of upgrading to the Quaife to keep the crappy stock unit.
