Lets try to have a mini meet at the USGP.... I know a lot of you are going!
Whats the feeling of doing this. We could all go to the museum at the track, or the Ferrari exhibit... lets try to plan this while we still have time!!

heck we will probably be in a rental car! I am flying in from California! Its the people that make up our club, not the cars! Sure, lets keep this post alive and get some Cell phone numbers circulating. Maybe after practice or qualifying we could all get together and have some dinner or something.

I live on the north side of Indy. I'm only 15 minutes from the speedway. If anyone wants to meet here, I can accomidate. I also know the back routes to the track to avoid traffic on race day. I'd like to see a dozen or more Impezas in my driveway. It's big enough to hold more too.
PR RS:
What section and row are your seats? I skipped the race last year, and have been kicking myself ever since. I'm going this year though.
Anyone else, keep this link alive. I can find us all sorts of things to do that weekend. Stephan Johannson's indoor karting center? There's another brand new karting center about 2 minutes from my house. Indoor, and 2 levels. Anyone up for some friendly competition? Let me know.

Streetman, may I camp in your backyard ?
Last year I drove over 1,000 miles in my Legacy GT to see the GP.
Me & 3 others rented an appartment for a MONTH (only stayed there 4-5 days). Doing this was much cheaper then attempting to get a motel room (all the motels were booked, anyways).
This year we couldn't get the group together, so I never got around to buying a ticket. Last year I was somewhat surprised to see tickets for the NORTHWEST VISTA being sold at reasonable cost on RACEDAY (to a sold-out event), so I am fairly confident that I can get tickets, all I need is a place to stay...
Parking was no problem, just so long as you get there early enough. Leaving on the other hand took some time...

Let me know more about parking, i am all for avoiding as much of the hassle as possible. I live just south of chicago by Route 30 and am only like 15 min from the indiana border, but it took us 7 1/2 hours to get home only 1 1/2 to get there.

It looks like we could have a decent size meet. I have pleanty of room at my place to meet, and I know all the hot spots nearby. I know some people are coming in on Friday, and some Saturday. Want to meet both days? One day?
BTW, I live 15 minutes from the track, DRIVE time. That'll be about 30 on race day. Not walking distance. As far as everyone's comments about getting out of the track-you either walk forever going in, or wait forever coming out in traffic. It's always been that way for the 500 and 400. Indianapolis has 800,000 people normally, and on race day ~300,000 are stuffed into a 2.5 mile oval. You're going to wait. We normally just plan for it, and party at the track for a few hours afterwards. You just have to accept it. Maybe a meet in one of the lots there? Spend a couple hours with other enthusiasts?
Let me know if you'd want to meet at the race, or other F1 events, or a restaraunt, or have a cookout....that's a barbeque, for you Cali folks. I'd be glad to help out in any way.

Not a problem. C'mon over. There's pleanty of room in the yard. I might even have some in the house.;) What night do you want to show up?
Let me know what you want to do while you're here. I can't find a schedule of events for this years GP, but last year I believe there were a couple races on Saturday, and of course the Ferrari show. Saturday after 2pm the go kart track here gaurentees open racing. Indoor, and two levels (yes, racing from one to the next), very cool.
Anyone have a shedule for that weekend? Should we just make up our own? My suggestion to some other people was to have a Subaru meet in one of the parking lots after the race. You're going to sit in traffic anyhow, why not hang for a few? Aside from that, everyone let me know what you'd want to do the rest of the weekend.

Dave/Bonzo-
Don't know about hotels. You should be able to get tickets at the gate from crying scalpers-the race isn't sold out. Check out usgpindy.com.
BTW, I visited your quaint little town this year on my way to the AMA races at Road America. Nice mismarked construction zones. Whole lotta fun at 5AM.
If you need anything else, let me know. I'd be glad to have a fellow cheesehead (yeah, I'm from WI) come on down. Hey, can you bring all my cousins down from there? Does the RS seat 16?

I was at that race too, its my fav next to this weekend which I just returned from, CART at RA.
Ya know I saw a stretch scoobie here somewhere. Unfortunately I have the short bus version which seats about 8 in a tight fit:p

Well, my plans have changed a little. Had some moron try to fit my truck in a parking garage with low ceilings. Of course they deny the damage. Consequently I'm out $500 to fix my truck.
So... I am not flying to Indy. Instead I am driving up with a couple friends and sleeping in some fellas yard up there. Yep, I'm crashing on someone's lawn. :D

OK, got some more info.
Ticket prices range from $45-$85 for the race. I think Saturday's events are only like $25. You want to be near turn one, at the end of the straight. There's still tickets available:
USGP ticket order form
http://www.usgpindy.com/tickets/images/usgpmap.jpg
That's a map of the track. You can also get a parking pass for $20 a day. I'm working on getting some through someone I know who owns a business near the track. I'll update just as soon as I can.
The ticket brokers in town are trying to get $150-$300 a seat near turn one. They're high. I'd suggest finding a scalper on race day. There were plenty last year, and I'd see even more this year. You should be able to get some near face value.
HOTELS!!!
For those of you who aren't into the camping scene, I checked two hotels nearby. Both have availability, for now. I'd jump on these quick. Last year when the Jaguars came into town for a Monday Night game, they had to stay about an hour and a half from downtown.
The place I'd suggest is Extended stay America. No pool or workout center, but every room has a full kitchen, and is only $50 a night. You can reach them at 317-843-1181. They have another location about 10 minutes closer to the track, but I'm not familiar with it. There number is 317-872-3090.
If there's anything else I can do, just ask. I should have something set by weeks end on where we're going to meet, and when we're going to race. Looks like racing after 6:00PM Saturday, and I just need to pick a lot to meet after the race on Sunday. If you've got input on this, let me know now. It's getting closer to race time, and I'm just grabbing the bull by the balls at this point. I haven't heard anyone say one way or the other, so I've elected myself as party events organizer fror the weekend.
I'm going to post this over where I gave the USGP schedule also. Can we combine these posts somehow? SHould I just put a link in both directing everyone to one, new one?

Well folks, I missed this thread earlier, but I'll be there with my wife and my brother.
We'll be parking the RS with the BMW CCA at their corral about three block SW of the track. (Before you ask, I'm the VP of the Illini Chapter of the BMW CCA, as I'm a longtime BMW owner!) I have no idea what our plans will be, as I'm not even certain if we're arriving Thursday night or Friday night.
In any case, it would nice to meet some Scooby folks as well the BMW people. Last year I even met the Chris, infamous Dutch 555! He had flown over from the Netherlands for the race and stopped by the BMW corral to say hi. I'd invite any of you to do the same. I can post more specifics later when I get home.
Anyone else thinking this is Juan Pablo's year?

What lot are you going to be in? Most people I've talked to want to get out ASAP, and back home after the race. I think once they see the traffic that day, they'll hang out for a while. Even if no one does, it'd be cool to all park in the same spot and have a Subi-caravan going through traffic. A one MPH caravan...funny.
Let me know what lot your in, and I'll just say we all meet there on race day. I'm also working on setting up something for the night before. I'll post more when I finally get it set.

Josh,
We're actually in a private lot that the BMW CCA rents out in it's entirety. I can't remember the exact location, but if you know where Charlie Brown's Restaurant is, we're about 2 blocks north. We're actually inside the police barricades, and they give us a placard to use to get to the lot on raceday. Pretty sweet set-up, actually.
I know we had a bad time getting out last year. I might be more inclined to take my time this year. Plus, we have to go back to our hotel to pick up my brother's car. I'm NOT looking forward to that, in particular.
Once again, if anybody wants to wander down on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, I'm planning on being there all three days. They are cooking out on Fri and Sat, but it's a pre-pay kind of deal. I'm pretty certain I'll be the only Scooby in the lot...

Elwood-
I'm all the way up at 111th ST, a stone's throw out of Carmel. But you're right, it's only 15 minutes, maybe. I'm about 5 minutes from the new indoor kart track though.:D
And speaking of that, we're racing there that Saturday, the 29th. Holy CRAP, that's only 3 weeks away! I'm going to put the word out once I nail down a solid time. It'll be somewhere around 6:00, as that day's events get over at 4:30. I've got to talk to the guys up there a bit more about getting something besides open practice. They don't really know what they're doing as it's their first F1 weekend. Regardless, I know we'll have a few Scoobies in the lot. And being many people are flying in, and renting cars, it might just be a few.
But who the hell cares? This is the closest thing we're going to see to a meet in Indy. I plan on doing every year. Remember, this is just the begining. Who knows, in five years we might get FIVE Subies!;)
Actually, it should be pretty decent. My yard is quickly turning into a Greatful Dead concert parking lot mockery. More people getting in by the day. Nobody worry though, I've got pleanty more room. And if it rains, I've got large race tents, or room in the house. Couches, and blow up matresses, sorry, no beds left. Unless you bribe one of my roommates, or want to sleep with one of them.
I'll post more as soon as I know more. If anyone needs tickets, http://www.usgpindy.com/ They claim they still have tickets. I know you can get general admission. I also know scalpers are not getting much more than face. You can get in. I'll have some ticket offers here in the coming weeks as people around here flake out. I'll check the Sunday classifieds too.
If there's anything anyone needs, email me at .

Alright Streetman, now you've got me motivated to start looking for tix and a place to stay. I'll try your hotel suggestions tomorrow and I'm shopping around for tickets already. If I can't find a hotel for a decent rate I may hit you up for a camp site on your lawn. I'm pretty sure I can scam out of work on Friday to get down there. I am definitely interested in checking out the indoor kart track. It won't be quite the same as the shifter kart but it's not every day you get to race indoors! Let us know if you run across any more hotels and/or tickets. I'm getting excited now!

Bump
any definite plans here yet?
| GQ | 09-14-2001 08:00 AM |
I will be there
I will be at Indy, although I think that it is hard to make definate plans for meeting. I will be at the track all three days, and I am driving my ImprezaRS. I am probably going to park about a mile away from the track on race day, although things might change. I am concerned that the crowd could be rather small due to travel restrictions, or people that are afraid to fly. I know that it would be hard to get me on an airliner at this time. I figure that it will be hard to organize anything until we all know what is happening. Hope to see ya all there...Rob "GQ"

We are meeting on Saturday, sometime after 5:00 at Fastimes Indoor Karting Center-"The only two level track in the Midwest."
I'll have all the final details hammered out this week. I haven't done much of anything this last week. It does sound like the event is on though.

If the race does in fact happen I may have some tickets for someone. I cancelled my plans and we have some of the best seats available. I will most likely give these tickets away but I need to think about this some more.
Shoot me an email if you need tickets so I can get a hold of you when I decide what I'm doing.

IT'S ON!
Here's the deal folks, we're meeting at 5:30 Saturday evening at Fastimes Indoor Karting Center. Their website, and great maps to their facilities are here: http://www.fastimesindoorkarting.com
Just park in the back of the lot and we should be able to stick together. I think this is going to be larger than we thought. I've got a lot of interest in the last few days.
I talked with the management today and they commited to keeping the track open to public racing that evening. Sessions are $18 for 18 laps. That is cheap. Keep in mind they rent the place out at $1000 an hour for exclusive events. It is incredible. They have food and adult beverages to keep us satisfied for a while. I figure we'll keep the rest of the night open to suggestions. From that location you are no more than 15 minutes from anywhere in the city, and closer than that to most attractions.
For those of you staying at my place, email me so I can get a headcount. Anyone else who has questions about anything for the weekend can feel free to do the same. I'll post more details as soon as I have them. The email is . Or just call me at 317-590-1109. Don't be shy.

Sorry for the late entry. My friend in Indy just told me about this. I will be driving to Indy in my MY02 WRB WRX (a scant 516 miles on it so far) this Friday. If there is still room I would like to come to the meet.

Jeff,
Glad you can make it :) The new car should be broken in properly by the time you get here.
I'll be there too. I live pretty close to the track, but won't be going to the race. I am in for racing if I get there in time. Dinner will definatly work.
Leonardo,
Are you getting in AM or PM? If it is PM and you need a ride from the airport anywhere, I have a wagon that should get you, your wife, and all your luggage somewhere fast.
I am also free Friday night for all those coming to Indianapolis early. We could go get some wings or something.

what to do in indy?
Leo
There's plenty to do, depends on what you're into.
Shopping- you're probably about the same distance from 2 nice malls. Castleton Square is on the NE corner of town, and Circle Center is right down town. Good food readily available in these areas as well.
Bars- definitely check out Broad Ripple- Lots of variety there
We're kinda hurting for speed shops, especially scooby friendly ones
Need directions or anything, anybody, email me
Jim

help me out indy guys, but I think the only outlet mall is probably 10-15 minutes north of town on I-69. There's a better one in Columbus, south of indy about an hour or so on 65.
Targets, they're scattered everywhere, I think there's one in castleton (NE side again), might be some closer to your hotel, but I'm a westsider, so I don't know....

Leo,
I am guessing you are talking about getting together Friday.
I will be free in the early after noon, probably after 3:00 pm.
Give me a call at 317-244-2892 when you are in town.
That goes for the rest of you invading my town too, lets do something Friday.
I changed my plans, I am now going to the race on Sunday with my friend Jeff (Quarters on this board), Mark and his girlfriend. She will be the only one of the 4 who does not own a 2002 Impreza. Poor girl.

Circle Center Mall
Also, can NE1 sugest any great malls and perhaps a Target?
Circle Center Mall is just about 1 block south of the center of Indianapolis on Meridian Street.
Keystone at the Crossing is on the north end of town at the intersection of Keystone and the 465 bypass
There is a Target on the West side of town (I forget the exit off of 465) a few miles north on 465 from the airport.
Geez, and I haven't lived there for six years ;)

Cool, Dale, you decided to grab the extra ticket?
It'll be fun. Or, it'll be fun to watch Jenn grouse if it rains and is cold again (like it was last year) ;)

dbrier-
"She will be the only one of the 4 who does not own a 2002 Impreza. " Does that mean I'll see you three at the Karting Center on Saturday?
Leo-
Try calling again. I can give you directions to the a couple Targets and malls. Hey, straight up 431 is a Target, 4 miles south is a new shopping center, and 4 miles south of that is the Fasion Mall. And guess what? The Kart Center is right across the street. How convenient! Karting at 96th and Keystone, shopping at 86th and Keystone. I'd skip the outlet mall up north. It's further than 15 minutes, and isn't as good as the malls we have in town. Circle center downtown is huge, Castleton was redone and expanded 3 years ago, and Glendale was redone last year. The fasion mall is alway the coolest place on the face of the earth. To get there just follow the smell of money. Indy Imports is the only shop we have around here. Gotta Honda?
Looks like this meet is shaping up. I'm going to put something up in General, see if we missed anyone. Anyone got any thoughts of what they want to do afterwards?
