Guys, guys ... this is the Motorsports Forum for Impreza's!

Now notice that IMHO, they DIDN'T use too many cones on this course.

btw. your fellow competitor, Shawn-Marie Kiesel, blocking the view of the cones on the left ... won BP/L. She usually races an M3 I believe.

I thought you were supposed to counter steer when drifting. Or at least steer... As far as I can tell from the video the wheels were dead ahead straight into the tree. Ouch.

btw. KC beating Evo Instructor and master car set-up guru Andy Hollis is a fairly big deal! Hasn't Andy won a National Championship or two ...

Not to take any fire out of KC for beating Hollis because it is a very respectable achievement. But this was Andy's first event out with his miata in STS2. The first day he was running a totally stock engine and for the second day he was running a header and intake. Andy said he still has a lot to setup in the suspension to get the car where he wants it. Either way congrats on the win KC.

Since you weren't at the event and just reading Andy's blog, you can go ahead and keep on thinking that. ;)

But let's play the excuse game:
1) This was my 1st auto-x since Oct... 5 months since I was auto-xing last.
2) Sunday, the RX7 I was co-driving wouldn't rev above 5.6K rpms (out of around 9K... do you know what the powerband of a rotary is under 5.6K is? Lower than a Miata) We found out the header melted the actuator ports so they wouldn't open under higher revs..... MMMmm unburnt fuel.
3) not to mention its a few hundred lbs heavier than a Miata.
4) Oh.. and on what has been called 'inferior tires' by 'someone'... Hankooks.
5) Let's add on the broken hand (but that didn't make much a difference in driving). ;)

I'm not saying I'm a better driver than Andy. Far from it. He just had a bad weekend. I had a good weekend. We both had our share problems (I don't have a blog to outline them on... so this forum will have to do). :)

He's got quite a bit of setup left in the car... but looking at the numbers on paper... and having driven the car... that RX7 is going to be heard to beat methinks.

its a sad state of affairs on teh internet when you have to make excuses for winning :)
makofoto 03-09-2006 10:44 AM

I think it's cool that we can share this info ... on both cars, and both drivers.

Andy taught my 2 day EVO Set-Up course.

Good to know for instance that my Hankooks are possibly "inferior." I need all the excuses I can! :D

In the current Sport Compact Car magazine, seat of the pants, means nothing, Tire "Test," the Kook came in 2nd behind the 615 beating the Advan Neova that many of us acknowledge as being perhaps the best. Most of our local BMW drivers in STU have switched over to the AD07. Might be a size issue also. It will be interesting to see how the 615 in Falken's oversized 235/40/17 does in STX now that it's available.

Is it actually available? Or is it still vaporware? Remember they were supposed to be available in that size Q2 (and then Q3 and then Q4) of last year too.

Vulcan tire states they're on Pre-Order status.

At least one STX car will have them @ Fontana this weekend. The arrived in Long Beach recently.
Draken 03-09-2006 12:49 PM

I know the Toyo T1R has not shown itself yet, but...I had my hands on a set of 245/35-16 yesterday. Could be an interesting STX WRX tire.

Chris H.
heading to Fontana in a few minutes...
ratt_finkel 03-09-2006 01:00 PM

Nice job btw KC. James has had way too many problems with that car in the short time he's had it.
makofoto 03-09-2006 02:14 PM

Chris ... do you mean 245/35/17 ?

The T1R would be an excellent rain tire ... doesn't have the ultimate grip of the big three though ... according to three tire tests.

See you tomorrow

I had heard something went wrong with the motor on the RX7 on Sunday. Yeah not being able to rev over 5.6K is a major handicap on an RX7. I have owned 2 of them and I now have a Miata so I can understand the power handicap. It was still a very good drive. Maybe you should think about creating a blog so everyone can know all about your driving and car setup also. :D Congrats again on a very good drive.
