i've painted my wheels with krylon duplicolor paint. it came out really well. i ended up using about three cans of paint, largely because one of the cans was a lighter shade so i had to use more. it is money well spent.

I have painted. I just purchaced some silver rim paint in a spray can and did the job. No cracking in the paint what so ever. I sprayed a few layers, four I think.
The paint dry and the result wasn't highly gloss as it shouldn't be. If you want gloss shine surface, maybe somebody else here can help you. Though, probaply a spray can for the gloss shine will do the trick.
Have fun - it's no big deal, just to find your golden shine paint :)

I work with furniture finishes and if they are any similar to finishes used on cars there should be a "high gloss" type that can be bought and used. Search around and you should be able to find something.

I'm planning on getting some RS rims and painting them black or a dark gunmetal-ish color. Would an automotive store have spray paint specifically made for painting your rims?
Yeah is somebody has some pics of stock WRX/RS rims painted a diff. color, please post them.

Do a search!
This has been covered many times. Search using my name and rims or paint or something...

For high gloss add 3 layers of clean coat. Most factory silver
rim uses clear coat to protect the metal against salt and give
it a nice shine. Hope this help.

I've been kicking around the idea of painting my rims for some time myself. Does anyone here have some pictures of the finished results?
Did you use regular duplicolor paint, or their special wheel paint? I would love to make my rims a light gunmetal color, but they don't make wheel paint in that color.
Did everyone here remove their tires before painting the rims? Is it possible to do a respectable paint job with the tires still attached? My wheels already look ghetto... they are very pitted and worn from road salt. Even if the paint job isn't perfect, it can't make the wheels look any worse. I'm thinking I can hopefully remove the tire balance weights and paint the rim if I mask the tires. Any opinions?

I think it is possible if you can cover the brakes and stuff under the mud guard and the outer side of your Subie, it can be done somehow while the wheels attached.
I however doubt you could cover them so well. You'll end up having gun metal calipers :)
By the way if your wheels are bad from the road salt, you could also paint them from the inside aswell after cleaning them.
I'm sure you guys remember that the paint must have to bear rather high temperatures, so be careful with the paint choosing.

I had mine powdercoated flat black. it costed about $200 for all four. the quality is awesome. personally, I think OEM Alloy wheels look the best when painted/poweder coated flat color. high gloss wheels do not contrast well with rubbers (tires).
| Albert | 05-03-2002 01:35 PM |
Yea, spend the $200 and get em powdercoated w/ clearcoat. They look awesome. [You should also only use tape on wheel weights when you get em balanced as to not chip the new finish whichever you decide to do.]

I'm also going to take of the wheel weights and get them rebalanced after I do the painting. Should look good. I think I'm also going to paint the "SUBARU" letters in the middle black to give them a nice touch of colour.

BTW - almost all gold whells will flake to some extent unless they're gold all the way through. Thats why silver is so popular. But, with the WRX, gold is the way to go IMO.

My wheels have been white, bronze and now they're gold. I used the normal Duplicolor car spray. But for the gold they make a Wheel paint, that comes in bigger cans, and it supposed to be harder. I used 2 of the 11oz. gold cans to do all 4 wheels.
Just make sure you clean everthing really good, and you might even want to wet sand them alittle.

Anyone in the Denver area interested in getting your wheels powder coated... I just spoke w/ C W Elaborations and the said they do this frequently. Depending on how much "clean up" they need prior to coating, it runs $200-$225 for all four with sandblasting, $150-$175 for all four w/ out sandblasting. They said they have a whole bunch of colors to choose from.
| DoinkMobb | 06-13-2002 06:15 PM |
Hmmm...$200 to have it professionally done and no hassle for me OR just buy the spray paint and do all the work myself. I think after I pay off my credit cards, I may need to fight the urge to charge them up again.

| Fuquad | 06-14-2002 12:35 PM |
For those of you thinking of simply painitng your wheels, powder coating is significantly stronger than painting. And, we're talking about wheels here. They tend to get a lot of wear and tear just from ordinary everyday driving, and paint will show that more. After all, powder coating is how a lot of wheels are colored from the manufacturer. But, to each his own. I guess they make wheel paint for a reason. So, it must be OK. Just my $0.02, but you get what you pay for.
| Albert | 06-14-2002 05:25 PM |
If you haven't found a recommendation yet just look in your yellow pages under "Powder Coatings". The ones that do automotive parts [hot rods] will usually say so in their ad listing.

As stated in the previous post the combined time for the process itself takes a couple hours, however since it is a multi-step process I have yet to find a reputable company that will do a turnaround in less than 3 days.
-sanblasting
-curb rash repairs
-prep/base color
-clearcoat
Ensure you discuss the entire process step by step with them.
Also, never again use oe style wheel weights when you balance your tire, I strongly recommend the tape-ons to keep the finish scratch/gouge free.

Have them liquid coated... a company called trubax does it for like 150 a wheel or something.. they also completely refinnish the wheels and will take care os scrapes, nicks, and bends.

Thats actually a very good idea. I didnt even think of that. The pros however, do an acid wash to ensure they good all grease and grime off and said that would potentially hurt the tire's finish. Just be careful if you do an acid wash.

Thats actually a very good idea. I didnt even think of that. The pros however, do an acid wash to ensure they good all grease and grime off and said that would potentially hurt the tire's finish. Just be careful if you do an acid wash.

A few cans of Berryman brake cleaner should do the trick
nicely!

Can you get this Subaru wheel paint in a spray can?
Or do you have to mix it yourself and spray it with professional equipment?

Buy in quarter or half pints only from autobody supply shops that sell Dupont Paint. Can't get in a spray bomb and it needs to be professionally applied. Mine looks great IMO. Everyone else says so as well.
