ProSolo News from Oscoda?
Any news? What's the deal? Sat results were posted, but they linked them wrong or didn't upload the PDF.

WHat's the deal?
PhilC 07-11-2004 09:28 PM

Tom won STX by 1.2 something. Shawn (sorry if I spelled that wrong) got second and I was .012 back in third, the exact same margin I was in third by after Saturday but with better times. Tom's margin of victory despite the sandbagging he did this morning on the right course was enough that neither Shawn or I made the challenge (39th and 40th respectively). Tom was 2nd top qualifier for the challenge but 1st was not running, don't know if he gets the nod for being top because of that or not.

Jen got 8th in L2 just getting edged out by Miranda who went on to win the bonus challenge over me. Congrats Miranda and hope to see you in Peru. Kim Fine took 5th in the STi in L2 and BOY do 275 V710s on the stock wheels looks big.

I think Larry was 4th in AS and I'm pretty sure he made the challenge but don't quote me on that.

Mike Junior Johnson took second in ESP driving an STi that he had never driven before Friday practice starts. Just got edged out by an Evo.

In STS I honestly couldn't tell you who was in front but I know that two Subarus made the challenge from STS.

In SM Phil had a bit of bad luck with a minor fire this morning and ended up standing on yesterday's runs because of it. I think he took third and I know he was 33rd for the challenge. Hope nothing more than the fan is ruined on that one.

All total I'm pretty sure there were 5 Subarus that made the challenge and one in Ladies challenge. Miranda and I ended up facing off in the final round of the bonus challenge where she whomped me very badly, more than a 1 second margin of victory.

Jen and I took off pretty much right after the bonus challenge so you'll have to wait until Tom or one of the others gets home or SCCA actually gets their web site right to get final results.

Sorry if I forget anyone and I apologize that I still don't know everyone who runs but we're still kind of novices at this whole Pro thing. I'll see everyone in Peru.

Good showing Phil!

I just got home, I had a good time.

I pulled out a 6th place in STX which gives me plent of room for improvement for next time. It was cool doing a Pro, very fun event and I like the concept. I know how much harder I need to push myself now at local events to be more competitive at national events, so it was good.

Congrats to Phil for 3rd in SM with just saturday's runs, I wish he could've gotten in runs today but it just didnt work out.

Big big thanks to Steve G for towing Phil's car home. I think we could've worked something out, but it really shows Steve's great attitude when he's willing to help out another competitor like that. See you Saturday in Milwaukee Steve (I hope I don't have to work).

How's Billy Brooks do???

thechickencow 07-12-2004 01:35 AM

I think he got 3rd in STS but don't quote me. The course was pretty tight at the end so it seemed to favor the lighter STS cars.

Tom Hoppe took the Super Challenge. Looks like it was a good day for Tom's car. :)

It was a good weekend for AWD turbos in SM, taking 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th places.

1st - Dennis Grant (Talon)
2nd - Matt Braun (M3)
3rd - Phil Bedard (WRX)
4th - Jason Tipple (Evo)
5th - Jack Brennen (Evo)
6th - Bob Tunnell (M3 and M3)
7th - Brian Burdette (Evo)

Both Phil and Bob T. had car problems. Phil had an oil fire on Sunday morning, and Bob broke his rear differential on Saturday afternoon. Bob finished up on Sunday driving the same M3 that Matt did.
trhoppe 07-12-2004 06:54 AM

Definetly a good day. I don't feel I quite truly "sandbagged" as I did improve 0.4 on the left sunday morning. I did totally back off after missing a 1-2 shift off the line on 1 run on the right and after I smacked a cone in the other run. Since your dirty times count against you, I didn't want to have a fast dirty. I guess that is kinda sandbagging a little though :p

Miranda finally woke up after class competition and pulled off some great runs to win the Bonus Challenge. This was her first Pro and she drove awesome!! She got redlit against and then broke out twice   It was really cool seeing her kick some butt out there, I was jumping up and down and yelling watching her run. Good Job!!!

Shawn also finished 2nd in STX even though he redlit his fast right side run. He only had 1 clean run on the right the whole weekend and it was baaaarely enough to squeeze out 2nd. He's getting more and more confidence in the car and he's going to get much faster before the end of the year.

I did qualify 1st as ron bauer wasn't running the challenge (lucky) and got a good draw in the early rounds. I drove well in the challenge and was able to take out some serious drivers, Larry Fine, Lynne Kozlak, Andy Hollis  I broke out once in the semis against Hollis but was able to make it back in the final against Jesse Noughton. I'm closer to Sortor now with 2 honda challenge wins, I still need to do good in Peru to match him for points going into the finale.

Awesome!!!! :) Any weather issues this round? Tom and Miranda... Tom winning Super and Miranda winning BOnus... whodathunkjit?

I love proSolos and wish I coulda been out there. Really. I lost to Tom out there last year and with that kind of performance he had this year, it would have been the same result.

Congrats to all... just making it out there to run is big.

Tom, IRC beotch. :)
trhoppe 07-12-2004 08:02 AM

Weather was awesome. Clear, Sunny, and the temps were in the 70s the entire weekend. After all the rubber was layed down the track was STUPID sticky during the challenge. I ended up fully tossing the car into a few turns and it stuck like hell. All the rubber we picked up too made the azenis even stickier :)

Tom, you know I'm just giving you crap about the sandbagging, after all there was LOTS of **** being dished out after you came in from the last right side run looking like it was a Sunday drive, someone else's quote not mine.

Congrats on the challenge win and again to Miranda who I think pulled out MUCH faster runs during the challenge than she did during the timed runs. At least I hope that's why she beat me by like .7 per side and it's not that I went a lot slower.

Now wouldn't it be nice if the links on SCCA's site actually worked?

MK [/B][/QUOTE]

They are "confidence inspiring" because of the feel. I don't honestly think the car brakes any better, and the ABS and ice mode still hit the same if you hit the brakes before the car is settled. I had that once and said "yup, abs still sucks". What they enable you to do better is get to the point of lockup. If you can do that with the stockers or 4 pots or whatever, you will have the same results.

After missing the 1-2 shift and then screwing up the turnaround, there really was no point in trying to push the rest of the run and getting the tires hot for shawn :)

Dennis had a combined time in the low 62s for the win.

I was right around 64 for fifth place, but I had about a 63.2 in dirty runs. I think that 1st through 6th were fairly spread out, with each position separated by a couple of tenths. My codriver was 0.051 back of Tunnell -- he's kicking himself that he came so close. ;)

jcroy66 07-12-2004 12:53 PM

I had a great time over the course of the weekend. :)

Unfortunately, I had a horrible time on course. Except for that Saturday afternoon left-side run that felt really, really good. Unfortunately the dreaded .445 meant that the full second that I would have gained was all for naught. :( And I apparently had my head WAY up my *** Sunday morning and didn't even come close to the 35.1 that was my fastest clean time, much less the 34.1 that I'd redlighted. :( And I never got the right side anywhere close to right. At least I had a couple "ok, but not good" right-side runs on Sunday morning so that I actually gained the half-second that my OTHER Saturday afternoon redlight (that one was a .495) would have cost me.

*sigh* As Phil keeps telling me, I just need to "drive faster".

Anyway, I did have a great time this weekend. I'm really glad I got to meet several more of you and got to know a bunch of people much better. Hey, I even found out that Tom can be a normal human being! ;) :D

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure Miranda should come to all the Pros, to give us more dirt on Tom.

And Miranda, I'm definitely hoping you come out to Peru, and I'm hoping you decide to stay in L2, cuz I really enjoyed having another STX gal to race against. :) If you decide to move to STX, I certainly can't blame you. I probably would too, except that after running in L2 in Toledo, I have to stay in L2 to qualify for the Finale. Next year, though, I'm strongly considering switching to STX. I really like the L2 competitors, but I definitely am not a fan of the indexed format. Course, I guess I would have been DFL in STX this weekend, whereas I was only next-to-DFL in L2. :p
thechickencow 07-12-2004 01:04 PM

Are results online anywhere? I'd like to see the challenge stuff especially, and the new scca site sucks for finding stuff.

Ahh...

Thanks. If anybody is wondering, the R by my name stands for driving like a Retard.

I at least hit the most cones in STX!
trhoppe 07-12-2004 01:13 PM

We have the pairings for the super and bonus challenges. We got the raw sheets with teh win ;)

-Tom
PhilC 07-12-2004 01:27 PM

Do the pairings show the dialins and breakouts on them? I'd like to know for sure that they got my dialin wrong for the start of the bonus challenge and not that I broke out by over half a second. I know I was down to a 33.49 (call it 33.5) on the left and 33.3 on the right and I _THINK_ the dialin they announced was a 34 something. If I really did manage to breakout by over half a second then I'm really kicking myself for not running better when it counted.
thechickencow 07-12-2004 01:30 PM

Phil they did announce a 34.2 or something dialin for you, I was confused by that since I knew you were running faster than that.

Jay
dwx 07-12-2004 01:38 PM

First of all I want to thank Steve for trailering my car home especially through some very bad weather once we hit Milwaukee. Heavy rain and glare and whatnot left almost no visibility, very stressful towing conditions, and I could tell Steve was a bit frazzled after the drive. :)

Second, congrats to Tom for the big win, and Miranda for the bonus, guess you'll have to do another Pro now. :)

I drove pretty well on Saturday afternoon but I definitely left time out on course, especially on the right where I screwed up the finish every single time. I don't know if I would have caught Matt and Dennis but I needed less than a tenth to make the challenge. I was sitting 22nd after Saturday, and the course was definitely grippier on Sunday. There is always next time. Hopefully the car will be up and running by this weekend, if not I'll shoot for the Peru Pro.

If Tunnell had run clean on the left he would have been 3rd standing on his Saturday morning runs. If Bob's car wouldn't have broken I think we would have seen him running in the 30.5 range on Sunday. I think he said it was the first mechanical problem he's had autocrossing a car in 16 years.
MNbiker 07-12-2004 06:26 PM

I couldn't do ANYTHING right all weekend - cones, redlights, wrong braking points, under-driving, over-driving, bad lines. I think that about covers it.

Other than the driving I had a great time!:D
Now I'll definitely be going to Peru, trying to regain some measure of self-respect & dignity. :furious:

-Steve

(oops, I almost forgot about Hip Huggers - guess the dignity part is out the window for Peru as well...) ;)

Yea, I'm a camera newb. This was our first try at autox photos and we noticed that exact thing. Miranda actually took most of the pics. Most of the pics were taken at "sports" mode on the cam and it was doing 1/4000th shutter speeds. Next time I'm going to try some 1/250s or 1/500s to try to get a bit more wheelspin or something like that. We tried it at the line and got a couple of cool pics, like the Z06 or S2000, but anything we tried with more zoom got fuzzy. Have to talk to the expert about that (Fred)

Wow, Oscoda was sooo much fun. I just wish I had driven the entire weekend like I did on Sunday. I'm gonna chalk it up to the overwhelming new experience of ProSolos. Hopefully attending these events will help me work on my consistency, since my good days are really good, but my bad days are much more common  .

Anyways, it was wonderful to meet you guys this weekend. I had a lot of fun hanging out with the Subaru folk! I look forward to driving in class with Mrs. Croy again! Hopefully we'll both be able to put down more consistent times in Peru!

Speaking of which, even if I hadn't gotten the opportunity to run in the Bonus Challenge, I'd still want to go to Peru. These Pros are addictive! I can't wait to see you guys out there!

Oh, and jbrennen, thanks for the advice. I took 3 runs during practice starts, just kind of winging it. Once I got it down, it wasn't so bad. Though my next to last run (on the left side) redlight made me soooo mad. I think I would have had a more solid left side time if I'd been a little less trigger happy at the start. Note to self: No more 5500 clutch slips on street tires. That equals redlight and/or broken tranny. ;)

Good thing you listened to me and not those other guys, huh? :D

My fastest run on the right side was a clean 31.6 with a 0.498 red light. I can't really get mad about it, though -- when you are running lots of mid 5s all weekend, it's inevitable that a 4 will slip in there...

solo-x 07-14-2004 10:13 PM

jason, i drove a 70hp vw at the san diego tour. i feel your pain. seemed like you had a bit of a fuel delivery problem, particularly in the turn around. nothing like having only 90hp, then having 98% of that power taken away from you on the slowest part of the course. :(

yeah the first 4 runs i only had a 1/4 tank and didnt know i would fuel starve till i hit the first turn... from there on i couldnt do anyhting for the rest of the first morning runs. the turnaround was the worst. i would hit the gas and there would be nothing until about 30ft after i straightened out. after i refueled it was a lot more fun.

Oh now what would we have been amused by if it weren't for the Dremel, small hammer, 2 pound mallet, baseball bat, and more black primer spray paint to "touch up" that nice Prepared car that you allowed us to witness. The only thing missing was a Sawzall or a plasma torch. If I owned one of the gasoline powered Sawzalls that EMS squads use I'd bring it to the next pro just to be able to offer it up as an option.

I really hope to get to know most of you better at future events since Jen and I are the newbies in this group for sure. And we're kind of wondering if we seem too stuffy when we keep getting called Mr. and Mrs. Croy (that's my mom and dad, or maybe my grandparents not us). It's true that the spring rates are fine for my commute. However, after the drive home on Sunday, I thought I should mention that the 5+ hours to and from these National events are killer!! :) My back actually seemed a little bruised Sunday night. :(

:) When's your next rally? I've wanted to make it out to watch one, and I think it'd be a lot more fun if I actually knew someone there. :)

FWIW, realistically, I don't think the drive would have been quite as bad had US-23 not been so washboard-like. :( Particularly down near the Michigan/Ohio border.
thechickencow 07-15-2004 12:48 PM

I'm skipping Ojibwe in favor of running both clubrallies at LSPR (october). My goal this year was one clubrally, and I've done 2 already. They get expensive pretty fast, especially in a year where you've just bought the car and have to get everything set up for it. I'm needing to buy another set of wheels and some snow tires for the eclipse before that, and I'd also like a set of track/street tires for it as well.

I had planned on Caddilac clubrally but they cancelled that due to road permissions or something like that.
