Bahrain GP thread part 1

Bahrain GP thread
JPM looks like he might be out Perdo might be in (vote for Pedro) at Merc. Webber has been injured since before the season started, broken rib. Sato's heathly again and F2005 will be raced. Should be interesting.
I am going to go out on a limb with these.
1. Sato
2. Kimi
3. Alonso
4. MS
5. Massa
6. Webber
7. Trulli
8. Fisi
SolbergWRCfan 03-28-2005 06:28 PM

Good to see Montoya out  , too bad Wurz won't fit, I bet he is faster than Montoya and Kimi if he does. Should be a good race.

Jon

1.MS
2.Fisi
3.RS

alonso, RB, pedro and both B.A.R.s retire.
kimi in the points.
Jarno for the win Mika? And i thought Sato was a crazy pick.
Sato would be a crazier choice than Jarno for sure, look at the Toyota's performance compared to the BAR, they have been destroying them. Sato isn't as fast or as consistent over a race distance as Button anyway. I want whatever you are smoking :alien:

Jon
TimStevens 03-29-2005 08:34 AM

Good lord... hard to make up my mind here. For kicks:

1 - MS
2 - Alonso
3 - Rubino
4 - Fischi
5 - DC
6 - Button
7 - Yadda
8 - Yadda

Yeah, its good stuff. I suck so bad at these picks that I figure I might as well pick the biggest darkhorse that has a chance in hell. If Sato does win I look like the smartest man on the planet! Then I can take over the world.

artkevin 03-29-2005 09:45 AM

Is this a real picture? I saw it on F1 live yesterday and then on Planet F1 today. I thought it was a photochop becuase it looks like there is zero space between the cars. Meh.

Yep, I believe it is. Turn 1 at the last GP.
artkevin 03-29-2005 10:03 AM

What is that, about $4,000,000 worth of equipment in one turn an inch away from each other? I guess thats a great shot.
finnRex 03-29-2005 10:19 AM

Kevin, I went with those just as crazy picks, including Kimi coming in 2nd. With all the luck the Kimster's been having(going from a podium to out of points due to a tire blowout), I'm hoping that my craziness is somewhat accurate;)

Mika
Arioch 03-29-2005 02:20 PM

Hmmm. stab in the dark time...

1) kimi
2) fisi
3) woobins
4) RS
5) alfonso
6) sato
7) truli
8) ms
finnRex 03-29-2005 07:17 PM

Arioch, thanks for keeping the faith in Kimi!;) I'd love to see him win a race.

Mika(go Kimi!)
ApexMaster 03-29-2005 09:27 PM

-Webber on pole, but blows up
-Jenson qualifies up there as well, but his bad luck continues as Sato runs into him taking them both out.
-Montoya breaks ankle in bizzare croquet accident, out for season.

1.Alonso
2.Kimi
3.MSchumi
4.Fisi

maybe $4,000,000 times 4 and you're close
ArtGecko 03-29-2005 10:49 PM

Tim,

Who are these Yadda drivers you chose? I didn't see them on my pick 6 entry form (although I was distracted by those "true" adverts. :D) Another brother act getting into the circus? ;)

I'll take a really short limb to go out on:

F.Alonso
M.Schumacher
K.Raikkonen
G.Fisichella
J.Trulli
D.Coulthard
R.Barrichello
R.Schumacher

One of the Yadda brothers is whoever replaces Montoya for the weekend (he won't be driving), and the other one is... a mystery? :)
BillT 03-30-2005 08:27 AM

Vote for Pedro!

F1 Racing-Live is reporting that Pedro de la Rosa is to replace JPM for Bahrain.
SolbergWRCfan 03-30-2005 12:04 PM

It is too bad Alex doesn't fit in the chassis, he is faster, fitter, and better technically than Pedro. I'd wager to say that given a fair shake he could give both of the regular race drivers a run for their money if not beat them outright. It has always made me mad that he has been stuck testing for all this time.

Jon

PS: Some of you think Fisi is fast, Alex was barely beat by a vastly more experienced Fisichella at Benetton.
artkevin 03-30-2005 12:25 PM

Alex is too tall for almost any F1 car. I met him and he's "American" sized, no Allan McNish and da Matta. He is very fasty and very technical.
OnTheGas 03-31-2005 05:11 AM

Either they were extremely lucky to find blocks those size to make Taku's height equal to the others, or they carry those around for lots of photo shoots. Given that they probably shoot he and JB together a lot over the course of a year, I'd imagine that's part of the standard BAR kit.

Pretty funny...
Arioch 03-31-2005 01:15 PM

Don't forget DST goes into effect this weekend. Beware in case you missing some portion of qualifying.
johnei 03-31-2005 08:33 PM

I like those blocks as well. I think they must bring them around - they look too well prepared for something they just found. I'm hoping the Red Bull team scores some more points and embarasses the respectable teams.
mno 03-31-2005 08:53 PM

Alex Wurz seems to be the logical choice for the drive. He has so much more experience racing. I dont think seat time in the new car would give Pedro a advantage.

I was seriously upset when I geard he didn't get the seat
rupertberr 03-31-2005 09:58 PM

Much more interesting this year. I'll give it a shot:

1. Alonso
2. Fisi
3. Kimi
4. MS
5. Trulli
6. RB
7. Webber
8. De la Rosa

Alex doesn't fit well in the chassis, it is being redesigned before Imola so that he can. I am also upset, but heck, I have had a bone to pick with ALL the team heads since he lost his race drive in 2000. I feel that he is a better driver than 95% of the grid. I would love to see him wipe the floor with JPM/Kimi/Alonso/Fisi/Webber so what I have been saying all along would be vindicated.

amp5 04-01-2005 11:24 AM

Anyone actually get up for practice this morning? MS took 5th in the new F2005 with Wurz leading by a full second at numbah 1.

ugh, 5am qualifying. wish i had tivo!
Dussander 04-01-2005 11:28 AM

The wife and I would not watch TV if we didn't have a TiVo.
I record it, but I still watch it before I start the day.
Of course drinking at 8AM before work is pretty awkward. (joke).
TimStevens 04-01-2005 11:29 AM

Yeah, watched it at 7:30 :)

MS looked reeeeal shakey. Wondering if it's unfamiliarity with the car or what. Interesting that Rubino took no laps at all, it sounded like they had virtually no spares for the new car. Good thing the track is so wide... not much to hit if you go off :)
Dussander 04-01-2005 11:39 AM

Rubino had gear box issues from practice #1.

Hum, how to add more text for silly April 1st joke???
Dussander 04-01-2005 12:41 PM

Innovation Brings Performance

The Renault F1 Team may enter the Bahraini Grand Prix on Sunday as championship leaders, but nothing is being taken for granted. Following problems for both drivers with their drinks bottle systems in Malaysia, the team has reacted quickly to solve the problem.

We are constantly working to optimise our drivers performance, explained Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds, and that means we try to make their cockpit environment as comfortable as possible to ensure they can perform at their maximum. As soon as we understood the problems the drivers had experienced in Malaysia, we knew we had to find a better solution for the hot, demanding conditions in Bahrain.

On Monday immediately after the Malaysian race, the drawing office at Enstone was hard at work on designing a new system, and this was ready for testing later in the week at Paul Ricard. Having been approved during three days hard running, they made their debut today at Sakhir in Bahrain.

Renaults road car operations bring us technical support in many significant areas, and this is a further examples of the inspirations we have found, continued Pat Symonds. Of course, we have adapted their use to Formula One needs, but our new carbon-fibre cup holders represent another concrete link between everyday motorists and the best racing drivers in the world.

Furthermore, we have actually found these new devices bring performance benefits, revealed Symonds. By mounting the cup holders lower in the cockpit, we have lowered the centre of gravity such that our simulations indicate a net gain of several tenths of a second over a race distance in Bahrain. Come qualifying or the race, that could make all the difference...

In F1, details count; the development of this foolproof system for Aprils first race is another example of how the teams constant quest for fractions of a second can bring unique, innovative ideas to light...

The character count joke is just getting silly.

Yep, looks like they are still running the RE-92's
artkevin 04-02-2005 12:56 PM

MS's car looked surprisingly good today but Fernando looks unstopable. I am completely floored by the preformance of the Toyotas. I thought they looked like crap in preseason and Trulli on the front row in Melbourne looked like a fluke but I guess I was wrong. They have real pace.

Thanks for the warning. I didn't even know about it. I don't know if my VCR will change or not. Dammit! I don't want to get up early to find out either.
jetfan2207 04-03-2005 01:23 AM

I can't figure out when the race will air live. The F1 site says the race starts in just over 2 hours (3:30am EST) but when I check speed channel's website it says live coverage at 7am EST. I would rather not stay up that late and turn on the TV at 3:30 and see NASCAR in other words stay up for nothing.

Thanks,
Steve
bemani 04-03-2005 01:57 AM

3:30 is the 2nd qualifying which speed doesn't air live.
finnRex 04-03-2005 10:32 AM

Quite a good race, I think. Renault looks very strong and from the looks of it Toyota and McLaren aren't too far behind.. Too bad Fisi dropped out(motor?). However, I don't plan on counting Ferrari out yet. Not by a long shot.

Toyota has definitely turned it around. Heck, getting a 2nd and a 4th is quite respectable, all things considered. Looks like Ralf may have made the right move.

My boy Kimi finally got onto the podium, where I feel he should be more often(slight bias, I suppose;) ). Pedro set the fastest lap for the whole race, so it seems that McLaren is getting on the right track. Just a few tweaks here and there, and they'll be consistently on the podium. Reliability is definitely up from last few years. It would have been interesting to see JPM in this race as well, mixing it up with everyone. All in all, an excellent race.

Mika
BillT 04-03-2005 10:58 AM

The new Ferrari will be a conender and one can only hope that Bridgestone will get better in the upcoming races. Fernando and Renault are definitely the team to beat right now and Toyota is this year's Honda (but may actually win a race or two). The driving towards the end between Pedro and Webber was some great stuff.

The remainder of the qualifying started at 3:30 am EST and the race started at 7:30 am. I found this out by checking Formula 1's website and accepting that they change the time to my browser's time zone. There usually is a "pre race" show before the actual start. I was watching some of the qualifying and the pre race before 7:30 am.

It was another dominant race for Renault and a good one for Toyota. My recollection is that Renault dominated F1 for many years when "Williams Renault" was the hot set up and then Ferrari jumped in when Renault left for a while, but it looks like Renault is back and has the perfect combination for the new rules.
rupertberr 04-03-2005 12:08 PM

De la Rosa had the drive of the race. Glad to see he took advantage of his opportunity. Hope he gets more chances.

Alonso is looking strong. We will see how he handles the pressure of being WC leader as the season progresses. So far so good.

Ferrari is just spotting the rest of the field. They will have it turned around in another race or two. The question is how long will it take Bridgestone to get a tire that is fast and lasts?

Villenueve should be fired now.
artkevin 04-03-2005 03:07 PM

Villenueve suspesion failed right as he was catching Rubens. Also, both of his sidepods were caked in brake dust so his car could not be on top form. If they fire him Im cool with that but it should be his fault, not the cars.

BAR is getting what they had coming to them. David Richards built that team and made it the Ferrari competitor it was. Then they fire him, and they cant seem to finish a race!

I hope Honda sees the err of their ways in forcing BAR to remove Richards.
