I use a titanium shift knob. Hate it. It sucks.
Too hot in the summer (it burns your hand)... too cold in the winter.
And it is too small to hold.. you just have to put the palm of your hand around it and tilt your hand in the opposite direction that you are shifting to help hold your hand over the shifter.

I like the Subaru/Momo knob. The leather at the top helps with the cold / hot issues and the size while large to some is perfect for me.
DieselClown 03-31-2006 04:21 PM

I use the LGT shift knob, and IMO it felt way better than anything else (a little flat on the top for your palm and perfectly contoured to shift comfortably).

I really like my stock knob. I had the KB knob and it just didn't do anything for me. I just didn't care for the heat transfer issues with a metal knob.
telum01 03-31-2006 04:50 PM

my fave so far is the stock sti shift knob. looks great, feels pretty good.

QwikRex 03-31-2006 06:29 PM

I've had a Momo Race air leather, STi titanium, Momo Subaru knob, Greddy Counterweight, and an ARC Titanium. Back to the stock knob now though. Out of all of them I liked the ARC and the stock knob the best. The others just seemed a bit too bulky.
johnnyb 03-31-2006 06:36 PM

+1 for the Momo leather. It looks good with the STI shift trim ring.
WrexT 03-31-2006 06:59 PM

Yup, Momo Race Air Leather. It only has a bit of aluminum at the top that you can avoid when cold, still has that look.
telum01 03-31-2006 07:33 PM

i've driven a wrx with the titanium shift knob that's available from the factory and i must say, it's quite the piece of garbage.

JDM STi Black Titanium style shift knob.

Stock was good, but there was a thread knot at the very back top of the knob right where my hand would go when upshifting. Annoying. This is smooth all over and plastic, so no heat/cold problems.

BTW, I didn't get it because it was JDM. I knew it would fit the threads and I liked the design.

best shift knob
I have four shift knobs now the stock 04 the stock 06 the STi optional titanium 6 speed and the petter soldberg limited. I like the petter soldberg limited the best. all aluminium or steel knobs will be cold in the winter and hot in the summer that aside the petter knob is a little bigger than the stock sti knob and al little heavier as well. the stock 06 knob is also very good its the heaviest of the three sti knobs that came on usdm models. the sti optional titanium is my second fav but it is a little smaller for sure. the 06 shift lever is a bit higher than my 05 model so that makes the optional knob a good choice to make the shift lever seem shorter. here is a pic of the soldberg knob. http://subydude.com/osc/product_info.php/cPath/220_91_122/products_id/62?osCsid=5b1891365dfed2f4ea792aa2e6d7f1b0 its pricey but i who have some experience with shift knobs for the sti think its a winner.

The whole point on having a metal shift knob is the feel the heat transfer once the tranny has warmed up, in the winter time. A good thing to know before redlining in freezing weather, as for the summer, put a sock on it, with an sti logo ofcourse.

^^^ holy moley that's f'n short!!!! What the heck kind of lever are you using?

Well, I've tried the momo shot carbon piece (carbon fiber on top and aluminum base), prodrive aluminum, and of course, stock. Hated the heat in summers and the cold in winters on both the prodrive and momo (carbon fiber didn't help either). Didn't like the feel of heaviness in both the prodrive and momo. Hated the rubber universal feel of the momo. Staying stock for now. Wish I had the prova knob. I guess I'm a fan of light weight knobs...

The best this, the best that...
I am using a black Kartboy Knuckleball, and I love it. It feels good to me, it has a notch for retaining the shift boot, it was affordable (fantastic value), and the customer service level provided by Tom was/is second to none.

My second choice would have been a Dent Sport Derlin Dogbox style knob. I just like how it looks.
randolph-rs 04-01-2006 08:22 AM

Here is my current shift knob but I have several others such as black acetal(delrin), 6061 & 7075 aluminum knobs, 303 stainless which is my favorite of the metal group. This one you are seeing is made of natural acetal or more commonly, white delrin. I am a CNC machinist and I work in a shop that makes goodies for racing so every chance I get I make myself something. I have been making different types of knobs for 4 years now and I have made them for Mazda & Subaru only. I also sell these shiftknobs but they are an exclusive to another site and I certainly don't sell them here so don't ask. Not to knock anyone elses knob but I think mine is the best in feel and functionality. Especially when it is grouped with my delrin shifter bushings and Kartboy short shifter.

Might be the picture, but its pretty close to a perfect sphere. I made a die in a CNC that was perfectly round then sharpened that to cut the shape I wanted in the lathe. That way I could make mutiple knobs that were uniform in shape. But I've only made three so far.

All shift knobs look cheap IMO, the group-n included. I have always thought there was some irony for a ball (or whatever shape) of some cheap material costing way more than it took to manufacture (more than even other overpriced items). But I sure like the feel of it ;)

That's what I have. The 02 had the titanium knob on it and I hated it, so I got the MOMO knob to match the MOMO steering wheel in the 02. My 06 TR came with the cheapy stock knob that weighed like 8 pounds, so I swapped out the MOMO knob for it. The 02 now has the red and black JDM knob from Subydude. My only complaint about the MOMO knob is that my MOMO logo popped off! I got it back on with some epoxy, but it's still not perfect. I don't think there is a shift knob I love, but the MOMO one is the one I like the best.

I've got a prodrive and it's a good size/weight. Sucks that it does get hot/cold in the weather.

Also had a momo tomahawk on my last VW and it was sweet...just decided to try something non-momo this time. Probably should have gotten a Momo air-race ball style shifter. Maybe next time.
