after reading this thread I'm tempted to try a paint job on my old rims to see how it looks... maybe do a silver/black combo :)
| zabutter | 08-03-2002 08:50 PM |
After reading this thread I painted my wheels with Duplicolor wheel paint. Did a professional prep job. One week and the paint still didn't cure. I took them to get powdercoated. It's the only way to really do it right. The lesson cost twenty dollars but I will soon have my shoes in a beautiful metallic bronze. Thanks Albert for the referral. Posting of pics when done.

Has anyone considered stripping the paint all together... and polishing them? Might look nice (especially on a silver rex)...
| DragonRM | 08-04-2002 01:50 PM |
So... anyone know a good place to get wheel paint online? would be cool to get rid of a the few scuffs I have by painting them all together :D

First thing, I would like to thank everyone who has posted information on this thread. I used the Duplicolor paint and clearcoat on my stock rims and they came out Sweeeeeet! Took me the whole day but I took my time to make sure they came out clean. I have to say I am very pleased with the resulsts and after the total cost of about 18 bucks to do it myself, I have no regrets. I have my car sitting on H&R springs and honestly with the rims painted you would you never guess them to be stock. I was just doing this to buy time until I could afford new wheels, but I like it so much I'll probably stick with them for a while. I dont have a didital camera but as soon as I get the pic's developes I will post them. Thanks again
Aaron

Has anyone painted their stock rims light grey or steel grey?
| ATX25RS | 11-16-2002 02:37 AM |
when everyone says duplicolor.....what kind of duplicolor exactly?.,....the wheel paint, or general purpose?....or which one?.
| thetikler1 | 11-17-2002 10:56 PM |

Hopefully this will help - Duplicolor spray paint specifically designed for painting wheels:
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/wheel.html
Colors - White, Silver, Graphite, Clear
They also offer advice on how to clean and paint your wheels:

I've contacted duplicolor already but thought I'd ask here as well:
I'd like to paint the stock rims gold. Per Duplicolor's website, the only options available are:
DP-1604 Universal Gold Engine Enamel [base coat]
WP-103 High Performance Wheel Paint - Clear [Arcrylic Enamel] - top coat
I know there can be problems with painting Arcrylics over Enamels, but what about Arcylic Enamels over Enamels?

Pretty much the same as any other paint job - a light sanding
with a medium grit (like 220) to knock the "shine" off of the
existing finish. I used a meduim 3M sanding block. Follow with
a good cleaning/degreasing and then paint

chips and scratches
I paint for a living, and the best way to avoid chips and things of that nature is to use an enamel instead of acrilic. enamel is a softer paint and will absorb the shock of small rocks where acrilic is very hard and will chip off.

my painted wheels.....
Stock rims painted "graphite" with Duplicolor process, rim left silver. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good tape line on the rim, so I may redo, but I'll just back the line up and re-tape, I guess with a stickier tape. I'm luvin' it anyway, though.....
