Suede Sti Steering Wheel Update.... part 1

RaceComp Engineering 09-02-2005 07:57 PM

Suede Sti Steering Wheel Update....
Well after a year of driving on my old Alcantara steering wheel, it is in great shape, but the initial covering was "good" almost great, but not excellent. We searched and searched and finally found the type of quality that is the same, if not better than the Ferrari Challenge Dashes with the incredible stitching etc.

On our prior wheels, we had some wrinkles in it, which we after 10 wheels almost got rid of, but still , here again, not 100%. NOW its the best I have ever seen. We are happy, with this quality. But like everything else in this world, it comes with a price. I know most people complained of the price before, so it didnt get cheaper, it is MORE. So this will be a thing that a few people will want and get , but prob not for the masses. After all, if its suede or Alcantara, your hands HAVE to be CLEAN, I mean, no lotion, no oil , no sweat. The good side to the SUEDE is you can brush it and bring it back.

Here are the pics. These are of a ACTUAL SUEDE WHEEL, not Alcantara. I love suede. This is factory stitching too !! This customer wanted the factory set up with red and black stitching.

Pay no attention to the GT3 seats in the background, we are covering those inserts with BLUE perforated Alcantara IDENTICAL to the OEM seats and useing those in an STI. ;)

boost junkie 09-03-2005 02:42 AM

I mentioned this over on IWSTI, but how about a (cheaper) leather option? like the stock wheel, only much thicker padding and nicer leather. that would be really nice, since I want a thicker wheel but don't want to deal with the maintainence of suede/alcantera.
IntraWRX 09-03-2005 02:42 AM

that looks awesome...too bad about the price...

The wheel looks awesome!!! I'm really glad you are happy with quality of the work. It came out incredible, like I knew it would :)

prob because leather isnt THAT much cheaper, so it becomes a thing where,....".hmnn for that much, might as well get th real deal.."

I agree but there arent many people ( so it seems, ) who want leather. Most want alcantara or suede because of the grip characteristics.
that looks awesome...too bad about the price...
yeah, its one of those things, and I dont expect people to be all over it. I just think, after seeing that thread where the guy hit the wall dead on at Willow, people who remove the airbag and use a nice cute sparco or whatever wheel, should consider the reality of no airbag. At least this way you have an airbag still. OR better yet, we spend 600 per seat for racing seats, in cars that dont go to the track, and 1100 for fmic, and 650 each for Wheels and .......................you see my point?......

There are 3 things we have CONSTANT contact with in a car.

1. SEAT....
2. PEDALS ....
3. STEERING WHEEL...

This is the "FEEL" factor. So if you have a 04-06 STi you already have alot of crappy feeling and feedback in the steering wheel, we figured this would just give some positive feeling to the overall experience.

Sure if you need an access port, let us know. But to try and compare the wheel with the AP....lol.....the two dont compare. This just comes down to whats important and to whom. I understand FEW will buy it, thats not the point of offering it actually, its for the few who something like does matter to.
Its for the person who maybe has already done what they thought was everything, and wants the final touch.

Myles is barely getting any profit(if at any) at his price because the steering wheels are labor extensive and the suede/alacntra is $$..
joeyb7 09-03-2005 10:07 AM

Thanks guys, I didn't know how much this material really costs. You're right though, this is one of those "final touch" mods. Looks great - hope you can sell enought to justify all of the hard work you're putting in. Good luck.

Actually, its only making a little over 400whp, but 650 would be nice! THat steering wheel would just finish the car off. I need more feel to it, the brakes arent good enuff anymore either... and dont make fun of my fmic! :furious:

When I started Racecomp my mission was to design and fabricate parts for small niche market cars that would have some following. Yeah we sel alot of suspension that isnt our own, but we use it and test it and alot of people LOVE the pinks, so it helps. We are slowly making our own parts and this idea ( suede wheel )was something I think of each time I see a M3 CSL, or a GT2 or RUF, or a Ferrari 360 Stradalle. I like the race-y feel and look and personality it gives the car.

We would rather have faithful customers who come to us for special projects that are high in quality, than make cheap parts( that everybody else makes ) and have them go bad after you autocross a couple of times or jack the car up a couple of times. I wont mention any names, but sway bar end link production is out of control, esp when they ALL look alike and all make noise after 3 months. HELLO !! lol...anyway, I wont get started, no worries.

is it really that difficult to take care of Alcantra? I thought it was supposed to be more durable than suede? which one is easier to live with on a daily driver and what is the price? they look great!
is it really that difficult to take care of Alcantra? I thought it was supposed to be more durable than suede? which one is easier to live with on a daily driver and what is the price? they look great!
The ALcantara is still in my car after a year. The wheel can be brushed and brought back fine. The suede has to be maintained more so while you have it. Overall its one of those things you just have to pay attention to. Like when you take your car in to the dealer, dont let the techs GREASY hands get on your wheel. Take those plastic wheel condoms and wrap it up so there is not grease stains left on it.
Oh, and no KFC or Popeyes chicken eating while driving down the road. Same thing for FRENCH FRIES..lol

Paulie 09-27-2005 11:35 PM

Although I'm sure the Alcantara will hold up better than what I would expect, I bought some Mechanix Wear Fast Fit gloves as added protection. I use them everytime I drive the car, and no worries.

Sure it's anal, but years from now I hope the wheel will look as god as it does right now :)

Jonnyfilmboy 09-28-2005 02:38 AM

Looks nice. I'm glad that there is such a strong aftermarket for us. There was a guy doing this same thing for Fieros, when I was into the Fiero scene (black '88 GT) and he had similarly nice results with random problems. Cost about $200. But he didn't make any money and because of a few quality problems on every 10th wheel or so he stopped doing them. I got the last one from him but in leather. Two tone black and tan. Awesome.

Good job Myles. Glad you care about the quality as much as we all do.

Slightly off-topic, but is it normal for Alcantara to get "fuzzy" pretty quick? I've got a BMW 330 ZHP with the stock alcantara wheel (same wheel on the M3 Competition) and it got really fuzzy after about 18k miles, so we had it replaced under warrantee, now the replacement wheel is getting just as bad at 38k. I thought at first it was a quality control issue that they might have fixed after the first batch of them, but it's obviously persistent. Is BMW using crappy materials or does all alcantara do this? Or is my wife using too much of her damned smelly lotions on her hands?

BigClunke 09-29-2005 12:10 AM

I am considering purchasing one of your wheels but, it is primarily because my hands sweat and I loose grip on the stock leather. Is this going to ruin the wheel? Do I need to cut back on caffeine instead? I really don't think its reasonable to wear gloves while driving in the summer, so I am trying to avoid that solution.

BMW can usually be convinced to switch it to a leather-wrapped M3 wheel if you have persistent problems with the alcantara, so I'll probably just do that. I love the alcantara but I know she's never going to control herself. It's mostly her car anyway.
Tkacik 10-04-2005 02:38 PM

If I was to spend that much on a steering wheel, I think I'd wear gloves while driving pretty much all the time.

How did you solve the problem of adding padding to the wheel and not having it move? Last time we talked about a fatter suede wheel you mentioned that by adding padding that it would eventually twist and move.
