New fiberglass project.. EVO like gauge pod
Just about to start into my next fiberglass project. This time I am working on a gauge cluster for the center console... the idea is going to follow the same kind of style as the gruppe-s EVO cluster seen here:

I am moving my single din stereo down and putting the gauges up above it molded into the trim piece so that it flows much like the evo piece.

Here is a really crappy MS paint to give the overall idea

I'm pretty sure I am going to have to do some trimming in behind it to make it all work but it should be fun to build.
[emailprotected] 06-28-2005 09:44 PM

what size gauges? i think they already make a single din one for the 52mm ones.

i could be wrong..
i have that same pod on the evo. decent quality.

Thats a good look i like that. i like the cf pod that takes place of the clock.
Gordata 06-28-2005 10:03 PM

looks good, was thinking of doing the same
brcewane 06-29-2005 07:42 AM

yeah, I am using the 52mm ones.. I just wanted to mold them in to give them more of a built in look
brcewane 07-05-2005 08:37 AM

UPDATE....

Started my fabrication... basically grinding out the areas to make the 52mm gauges fit.. I am trying to make the gauges line up with the three HVAC controls on the bottom. I should be getting the actual gauges tonight or tomorrow so I will be able to make some quicker progress then.

holy **** hackjob batman!!! dude you should have waited for the gauges to come in....totally wrong way to do it.
brcewane 07-05-2005 12:25 PM

why would that be the wrong way to do it??? it is all getting fiberglassed to look built in... you won't even see any of that stuff where it got hacked out. Don't see why it will be a problem
WRXSIG 07-05-2005 03:55 PM
why would that be the wrong way to do it??? it is all getting fiberglassed to look built in... you won't even see any of that stuff where it got hacked out. Don't see why it will be a problem
i would have personally waited...bacause the back part of the gauges are smaller than the front faces...so you could have possibly made the holes smaller...but if your doing the whole surround than thats prolly fine.. should come out cool though... :p
brcewane 07-05-2005 04:37 PM

Yeah, the white circle there is actually the back of an old Autometer 52mm gauge.. the screw on piece that comes with every autometer gauge.. so the hole should be good...

The gauges are in, so I will be doing some more work tonight :D
Sanchez 07-05-2005 05:47 PM

d00000d nice project... if you get it goin and start selling them let me know. I miss my clock :p
ludecrous 07-05-2005 06:04 PM

curious to see the results could turn out awesome. ... nice.......
brcewane 07-06-2005 07:14 AM

Gauges have arrived, didn't have time to work on it last night... tonight is time to get busy :)

I've seen your fiberglass handywork in the audio forum, so I have faith! Looking forward to the final result.

that will look awsome
brcewane 07-07-2005 10:06 AM

Progress under way. Picked up some supplies and got started on my gauge mounting.

First was drilling the holes for the gauges in some plastic I found at Home Depot that had a nice 90degree lip on the bottom.. just what I was looking for. Then used a 2" hole saw for the gauge holes. Works nice and the gauges sit snug in them.

Then had to do some more trimming of the trim piece and the plastic to make it fit just right. I was wanting to make sure that the holes cut for the gauges would line up over the HVAC controls for some symetry.

I also wanted to make sure that the top of where the single din slot was looked like the angled top of the stock trim piece to make it look more factory..so some trimming was involved there

Then I used a glue gun to temporarily hold it in place so I could start with the body filler. This picture is just after the first layer and sanding of the filler.. lots more finishing work to do

Here are a couple of more pics with it in the car.. in the second picture the gauges are sticking out a bit and not sitting flush just because I wanted a test photo and didn't want to fight to get them back out since they are snug. In the end it will all be painted silver and I will paint the trim pieces above it as well so the colors all match.

Car vs. Driver 07-07-2005 10:17 AM

Nice, that's going to look great when you're done! Are you going to recess the gauges a bit to match the HVAC controls? That would be killer ...
ludecrous 07-07-2005 10:17 AM

looks cool so far

That was my initial intention.. but unfortuneatly just isn't enough room to do so.. it is a really tight fit and I had to trim out a bunch to get the 52mm gauges to go in...

But you are right.. it would look killer.

Thanks for the compliments :D

Berrry Berry Nice Mon!
jojor512 07-07-2005 11:15 AM

looks really cool, but personally I would do away with the chrome surrounds, even if it means mounting the gauges to the back of the bezel
Damon 07-07-2005 11:32 AM

i hate all you people with mad fiberglassing and carbonfibering skills.
CletusTheDwarf 07-07-2005 11:34 AM

ok, i know i'm a complete noob when it comes to fiberglass/carbon fiber, but where is either of these in the project? don't get me wrong, i think it will look awesome, but as far as i can see it's just plastic and body putty, which will be then prepared and painted.
stevepius 07-07-2005 11:45 AM

Well, the gauges are the autometer carbonfiber series but I don't really know abou the fiberglass, I know nothing about that.
djerickd 07-07-2005 11:56 AM

Sweet!!!

Well when I started the title I was going to do more fiberglassing to make it fit the way I wanted.. but I found this nice piece of plastic that saved me a ton of work.

Interesting suggestion.. I will take a look at what it may look like that way and what is possible.

thanks for the suggestion :D
SanRemoRex 07-07-2005 09:50 PM

Any thoughts of using the wedge-rings here to kind of angle them up and towards the driver's side? That would look pretty boss, and functional too.
brcewane 07-08-2005 07:07 AM

took a look at the posibility to have the gauges mounted on the back of the bezel.. There just isn't enough room in there. they are a real tight fit in that DIN slot even with it dremeled out....

I don't think I will be able to angle them up for the same reason.
ChrisL2 07-08-2005 06:13 PM

Looks nice.

I was planning to try something like this, guess I will look into it a little more.
CletusTheDwarf 07-12-2005 09:20 AM

any updates?
sadRS 07-13-2005 02:32 PM

pics please.......
brcewane 07-16-2005 03:09 PM

No updates yet.. I was on Vacation all last week at a cottage... Should have some updates tomorrow.
brcewane 07-17-2005 03:51 PM

OK.. managed to finish the body filler/primer and waiting for the final coat of paint to dry.. here are some pics.... Hopefully install tomorrow when the paint has cured

Very Nice!
Props for your creativity and excellent work
I love it when you come up with a unique/ functional design and people flame you or give you the "tha's fugly" comment Ha !
WShade 07-17-2005 04:32 PM

You could very well market that thing
brcewane 07-17-2005 04:36 PM

Thanks guys.. hopefully I will have pictures of it installed tomorrow if it is not too dark after work.

I painted the other trim pieces the same color so that they all match.. it was a pretty close match to the stock color
brcewane 07-18-2005 07:22 AM

Well here it is.. finished and installed

DrD 07-18-2005 07:47 AM

Nice job!
pdippel 07-18-2005 11:28 AM

Looks great! Black bezels would look even better.
Blazin 07-18-2005 11:29 AM

How on earth did you color match the other dash pieces? or did you paint them all over as well? I definately think that's the coolest thing.. again it would look siiiick with the recessed gauges but if i got in your car and saw that'd i'd definately be impressed. Make me one =) hah
CletusTheDwarf 07-18-2005 11:31 AM

what kind of prep did you do to do the painting?
WRX-ERROR 07-18-2005 11:58 AM

Nice job.. Looks very good.. One question how is the viewability of the gauges? Can you see them and read them both there while driving?
djerickd 07-18-2005 11:59 AM

What paint did u use for the silver?
brcewane 07-18-2005 12:00 PM

Yeah I painted all those center pieces with as close a match as I could find...

To prep the other pieces I just wet sanded with 600 grit paper... for the modified piece I primed and sanded with the 600 grit paper then sprayed away :D
essteaeye 07-18-2005 12:02 PM

holy ****, im very impressed...

When i first came into your thread i was like *** is he doing lol, it was all hacked up, but i take that back now, its looks awesome
LOLSTi 07-18-2005 12:04 PM

Looks awesome.... got a P/N for that plastic piece?

Yeah I may end up painting them... I'm just going to see how I like it in a couple of weeks
redsube' 07-18-2005 01:29 PM

evo like gauge pod
looks great. I prefer the DIN location for gauges myself

heres my setup:

jason.g 07-19-2005 10:52 PM

very clean DIY man..you should look into producing those in quantity - in my opinion its one of the cleanest pods i've seen for the wrx. i've been searching for a gauge pod for the past week...the options for my05 are pretty boring to say the least.

you should get plenty of attention at your next meet with that piece of bling
brcewane 07-20-2005 10:29 AM

Thanks man... wasn't that hard either
Thumper23 07-20-2005 10:56 AM

wow, that came out looking great
Steve.804 08-16-2005 04:47 PM

^to say the least!!
if u ever would consider selling some please let me know...ill pay top dollar for your handy work!! (email: [emailprotected])
OHARA 08-16-2005 09:34 PM

what size guages are you using?
MB38 08-16-2005 09:41 PM

If only it was angled upwards and towards the driver.
OHARA 08-16-2005 09:52 PM

what did you use for that 90* angle ant the bottom?
brcewane 08-17-2005 09:52 AM

The only way that I could be able to do more of these is if people sent me their trim piece. I have no production means available to make sure all the factory clips in the back would fit.
