options for Gt style wings part 2

Street2.5RS 06-02-2002 02:12 PM

check out http://www.do-luck.com/ and look at there gc8. i think it's actually a 22b (or flared type-ra?), but i'm going to buy that wing, it's like a really low gt type. or go look at the "wide use" (universal) and check out the wings they make.
SoBaLo 06-03-2002 04:04 AM

That Cwest CF wing was around 1700
WorldRallyRedneck 06-03-2002 09:21 AM

I currently have a Arospeed aluminum viper GT wing on my 01RS. I bought it because i wanted to be diffrent then the rest of the scooby club with rally wings on their cars. Thing is now the more i look at it, the less i like it. It just doesnt fit my car so in a couple months when i get back from the beach im going to order a new ver 5/6 wing. They do look good on some cars. I just dont like how some fellow scooby owners give you crap if you dont go 100% rally, no i dont dont race on the GT circuit, you have a 22B wing are you a WRC driver?

Ignoring Willguidry's racist remarks (truth is often out when drunk).

This is a Form or Function question. There a spoilers and there are wings. One is designed to interrupt the air flow, the other to act like an inverted aircraft wing and give downforce.

For example, the 22B wing if set to maximum downforce on a standard car could rip itself from the trunk or buckle the trunk lid (has happened more than once in the UK). Certain GT wings can provide the same effect.

You should not have a downforce applying wing unless you balance the rest of the aerodynamic package. A good example of this is the UK300 front lip which should not be used without rear downforce.

However, I think this is all about FORM and the actual function does not matter. That being the case you can stick anything on the trunk. A mini surf board may look cool on the west coast (joke guys). :D If you can live with it ... do it.

I happen to like Skylines with GT wings (we have a couple near me in the UK), V5 spoilers on old-shape scoobies and the new Prodrive STI spoiler on the WRX/STI. As most of these will never see conditions where the Function is relevant, then they are there purely and simply for looks. Personally I do not like the look of a GT wing on a WRX, it shouts F&F to me.

Oh come one lads,

those wings are HORRENDOUS!

No one ever said you have to follow the rally image, but HELLLL-O!!

It's a RALLY CAR.

And you cannot deny that folks. Say it with me....RALLY CAR.

Not a ricey honda civic, or eclipse, or integra, or accent, neon, yaddayadda.

Nor is it a GT car. So why do it?

I mean, it's your style...and don't let anyone tell you NOT to, I am only asking why do you want to?

If you wanted that type of car, why not get a mustang, or something like that. But I don't like the GT wings at all. They are not my "style".

However, don't be offended when you drive up in a Subbie with a GT wing somehwere, and folk like us laugh. The ricer kids will love it, and you will be their god, but respect from the real drivers....out the window.
(By the by, I'm not a foremost expert on this stuff, but showed a buddy of mine the picture of the subbie with GT wing, and he laughed so hard he fell on the floor.(He's a diehard subbie buff, and mechanic at a subbie dealership)

Cheers

I was just about to post the SAME THING.....
Those comments about "its not a GT car"
Well there you go, Foot + mouth = you !
BTW -- I dont really like the look of these wings either tho.(especially the reallllly high one's) If they where about the size if the STI one and followed its same style, then they would look really good....I think the one that sobalo posted is a bit to high  The one that was posted on the ad doesnt seem to bad as long as it would stay lower to the body like the sti one, I think that would be the ideal height for these style wings....
But BY FAR the wing that follows the WRX's lines the most is the zerosports wing without a dought...It almost looks like it carve's into the body....Oh and its FUNCTIONAL......I'll post up pics after I get the complete kit installed....
Seraph 06-03-2002 03:37 PM

I believe somewhere (i can't find it anymore) on this forum there was a gt wing where the back extends a little to provide more downforce when needed, does anyone remember where its at?

its a good thing that the GT imprezas were brought up, because how many of us commute in the dirt? For a fun weekend rally racer, a rally wing might fit the look, but for a daily driver, i'd rather take a GT wing than look like my car is being mud-starved :p I like the racey look, even if i don't race, it just feels good to be in a fast looking car......maybe i'm just starved for attention  God knows why fast cars can't look fast all of a sudden
Seraph 06-03-2002 03:39 PM

One more thing, speaking of gt wings, are there gt wings out for wagon? I know that some company makes a universal roof mount type for eg6's and stuff, and they had diffrent lengths
FuJi K 06-03-2002 04:47 PM

no more need to flame or that other stuff, willguidry already said he's sorry stuff so just let it be......

anyway..........GT wings are great! Rally wings are great! having a wing is GREAT!;)
KenG 06-03-2002 07:03 PM

I know I'll regret this post...

A little snippet from STI's sales blurb on their GT wing -

" down force was generated giving stability at high-speed limits, cornering efficiency improved. In addition, it actualizes the optimum aerodynamic effect with the front lip spoiler by installing simultaneously"

The important bit here is that if you intend to have rear downforce you should also have the lip spoiler. If you don't, the rear will push down causing the front to lift. At freeway speeds this could cause the steering to 'wander'. The reverse applies.

Ignore cosmetics for a minute and think aerodynamics. Make a proper job of it, don't just go for the looks. You could get what you want from the style and also benefit from the car having better road manners. Its a better story to tell to people who ask why you have a GT wing.

I'll get my coat and leave this thread..........

wighti 06-08-2002 02:11 AM

Have you guys asked about that wing?
It's 59" long!!

Don't know about you GDA guys but that thing is about the same width of my GC8!

If it was shorter.....I'd get it.

Ok I see everyone srguing about ricers and whats rice and whats not and I havent seen anyone come close to what rice is meant to be. A "riced" out car is one that generally is cheaper than dirt, has alot of eyecandy mods, ie front, rear bumper, 18" wheels, huge gt wing spolier, 10,000 stickers, coffee can exhaust, and most importantly no performance mods. Ricer cars are all look no go. Well atleast thats what I see ricers as. If you consider rice as any car with 15k put into performance and eyecandy mods than any car that as been modded would be considered rice, from Vettes to Civics and everything inbetween.

YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!

There is a difference between a "rice" car and an "import tuner" type car. "Import tuner" cars have tons of expensive and outrageous style mods, with an under-emphasis on actual performance. Think wild body kit, slammed suspension, tasteless wheels and a crazy interior. They don't look like a GT race car or a rice car.

Unfortunately, GT wings are a popular choice for all three.

I personally like how a GT wing looks on any touring style race car. However, that style needs to be rounded out by a suspension drop and purposeful front lip.

Hadaz's car still looks funny with the wing on an otherwise stock car.

Why don't ya get your facts straight before ya post about somebody's car - espesially behind someone's back.

I will easily say mine's the NICEST lookin WRX I have seen (ouside of $-no-object SPARCO car and others similiar to them) - and if ya don't agree, post your pic, or shut your trap.
:D

Its a good thing you can barely see that wing.

See, that's where you lost me. Sparco -

I must say your car looks much better than it previously did. You actually took the advise I gave you about 3 months ago about the lip, lowering, and black wing. What happened to those wheels?

My car is red, no exclusively "visual" mods, just lowering, 35% tint, and grey rota tarmacs. Very understated and classy. Brings out the lines of the car.

Kevin
Hazdaz 06-14-2002 07:46 AM

"You actually took the advise I gave you "   Yea, don't flatter yourself. I take no ones advise besides mine and my wallets - period.

I have had a plan for my car since day one of owning it (with only the funding slowwing me down), and none of the 'sheep' could ever alter that. Maybe thats why mine right now is easily the nicest and most unique WRX I've seen - but will always be a "work in progress".
Concerning those awseome wheels - unfortuntaly I could not get them machined down to change their offset :( , which was great news for this dude down the street that immediately offered to buy them... meaning quite a bit `o cash at my disposal in a week or 2 woohoo... :)

"Brings out the lines of the car. " When the car already looks like soo many other Japanese cars out htere, that translates to just plain "boring".
