SM... The Sias-mobile skipped the weekend for a couple reasons. One was related to noise restrictions. I'd love to win SM this weekend, but wasn't sure 110 horsepower was enough to get it done. It'd suck to lose because you didn't have enough power to get out of your own way.

I believe Josh is something like 12th with a blown rear dif ... he's going to co-drive Barco's car tomorrow. Barco is in 4th ... tight group from 2nd to 4th. I believe the fellow that came in 2nd at Atwater has a good lead in STX. STU hadn't run yet when I talked to some folk down there.
KC was going to run Rocky's '05 STI in STU ... more as soon as my buds report in.

Mark Coleman, who won STU last year, says that even though the course is not heavy in transition and it's pretty fast/flowing, but he's only hitting the 2nd gear STI limiter a couple of times ... the BMW's are cleaning up. National Champ (which class?) Steve Oblenes is I believe leading ... with Atwater winner and BMW driver Chris Teague up there along with local LA BMW hot shot driver Mike Simanyi. Mark didn't see KC? San Diego STI driver Tom Shepard was I believe the top STI. Max Hayter is I believe the third STI with his '06. Mark said his just wasn't going full out ... all three runs clean. I think it has something to do with the fact that he just got engaged last night to the english lass he meet at last years Tour. He won to impress her ... now ... ;)

Going down tomorrow to check things out ... missed the Tour myself because I just got back this afternoon from 2 weeks with U2 in South American ... working on a 3D HD project with them. :D

Yay, way to go KC! Looks like KC is leading STS2 by 0.8 seconds over Andy Hollis. Both KC's second and third runs were good enough for the lead. Oh, and why KC is in STS2 instead of STU: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=925127
Very unfortunate about Josh's car. :( Hope he can get it fixed in time for next weekend's Pro!
At least based on times, I wouldn't have characterized the BMWs as "running away with it". Top STi is only 0.2 out of first place. Very tight class - all 7 trophy spots are only separated by 0.369 seconds. Glad to see STU beginning to live up to its potential by beating STX and STS.

Yes - I suck!!
In STU, Tom Shepherd was the top finishing STI in 4th. He really did a fabulous job and was way quicker than any other STI. He was running on RE070's. Steve O'Blenes won, closely followed by Mike Simanyi. On Saturday, I posted the 17th fastest (yea me!) after some slalom 'issues'. Today I posted the 7th fastest time and ended up 14th. Lots of fast transitions both days and speed maintenance was key. One BMW was running 275/40/17 615's!
In STX, Alec Osenback (sp?) won, someone (BMW) 2nd and Jeff Barco 3rd.

Could not make it, thank to being laid off at work (outsourcing, UGH!), so was not able to be there for KC to drive my car - and boy did I want to see what he could have done with it!
But WOW! Looking at the results, it seems that the BMW's might dominate STU. Giving them up to 275 tires might be a mistake, and most are using 265's. No ifs ands or buts, the //M3 is a fantastic car.
Looks like Yokohama is the tire to have (and I DO, yipeeeeee).
Seeing as I have yet to beat Max or Mark, doubt I would have done well - but who knows what KC might have been able to do in my car :(
Well, congrats to ALL the tropy winners though!

Not bad KC..... even with the gimp hand.
Steve Oblenes and Mike Simanyi were absolutely on fire in STU, unfortunately they were in BMW's. The STI's definately have to start playing catch up.
Very cool event. Alec drove very well. His car seems to really get up and go.
It was an honor to have Sorter drive my car, I got some good feedback from him. I'm glad he didn't say the car sucked.

It was really interesting seeing the SCCA National staff measuring the course with a tape friday morning. The course was definately under the magnifying glass. Funny thing though..... I coulda swore I was going faster than 45mph in the wiggles on Saturdays uphill section and Sundays downhill section. Maybe they don't consider wiggles to be turns. ;)

Well I wasn't there to see it myself, however that finish didn't seem very safe to me. it was way too fast, especially with that right-left manuver at full throttle. The person sliding around in the video could have easily slid into that giant pole to the right of the finish area (maybe ~20ft away). I've never seen a course with at that rate of speed at the finish...

holy sea of cones batman. they could've gotten by with a few less cones for the corner workers to deal with.
as for the course the only thing I didn't like is that stupid turn at the start. Why the heck to people think it's fun to put a turn 10 feet from the start line. The rest of the course look REAL fun.

video doesn't give the same depth perception as you'd have in real life. the lot the event was held on has a lot more camber/elevation change then you can see in that video too. true, the finish did encourage spins, but the pole was not a safety issue. SD region does a great job keeping things safe and quiet. and they used grown up cones!!!!

After I saw the spin video I would agree. If the car had spun in the other direction, then the result could have been worse.

I will agree that the finish did not look to be the safest in the world, it also did not look overly unsafe. I have run several courses over the last several years with finishes that are not very safe for either competitors or spectators or even the timing van. The too close to people portion can always be changed by moving the spectators or a courseworker station. The inanimate objects have to be worked around and I will agree that sometimes a course gets too close to a curb or light pole but that course did not look to be too dangerous to run on.

With the dwindling number of sites in the world I have run on many that are much less safe than the one at SD. As long as there is nothing that affects the time of run that is after the finish I'm usually happy. I dislike stopboxes that cause you to hit the brakes before the finish. As for the SD I probably wouldn't have thought too much about it beyond it being really quick and sea of cones.
