Hot off the presses... (or the TV for that matter)
Speedvision announced today that they will be debranded and will soon be known as The Speed Channel.

I hate NASCAR as well and I was sad to hear that SpeedVision would be adding more NASCAR to their programming. TNN covers NASCAR don't they? I don't see the need for SpeedVision to get into it. Well, I'm gonna stay quiet for now since I don't know exactly what's going to happen :(.

I was lamenting the end of F1 season, only to turn on Speedvision and find Lap of the Gods was being shown - both segments. I made sure to tape the replay later that night.
Then last weekend I turn it on and saw they were replaying Victory by Design: Ferrari. I've probably watched that show a half-dozen times, and I still can't turn it off whenever it's on.
Then last night was the airing of WRC. 'nuff said.
Can you imagine having to endure ABC-quality converage of F1? Jason Priestly? And of course Bob Jenkins - "There goes Ralf Schumacher, followed by... ahhh... ummm... that other car."
I can only hope they don't do anything to mess this channel up more than they already have with the worthless daily NASCAR update shows. I couldn't care less what they call it.

Those NASCAR shows suck. What the hell are they going to do when its the off-season for NASCAR? And ive watched that NASCAR tech show, and well, i think they are already out of NASCAR "tech" . The last one i saw, i swear, half the show wasnt even on NASCAR. It was on street tyres. You can only do so much on one subject.
Mayb if i get satalite, i could get one of those european car channels(if any exist). that should calm me down somewhat. And hey, i might even pic up some german words while watching.

The word on the street is that they're gonna decline some of the other programming. like boats. and thursdays...that's kinda the "everything day" for them.
The other word is that they are still pursuing the F1 contract and rally, as well as CART and IRL highlight permission. They have heard us, and called us extremists...pretty funny really. There have actually been threats to cancell service.
It might not change as much as we worry it will.
Just wait and see.
I forsee a dedicated NASCAR day, to show old races, new highlights...Legends of Motorsport is one of the more popular shows.
But I tell ya...if I EVER see "The Ricky Rudd Hour" followed by "The Sterling Marlin Hour" followed by "The Dale Jarrett Show" followed by....you get it...I've got the back of the guy going to beat up Murdoch.

YeeHaw, NASCAR. Yep the Good Ole Boy Network is what they should call it. I too agree with ya. I am by no means a NASCAR fan. I hope that the channel fails miserably if they drop the programs that I like. I rather enjoy the shows that we can't typically enjoy on any other channel (Lap of the Gods, Victory by Design, Motorsports Mundial). I hope that they continue to bring us coverage of F-1, WRC, Grand Prix Motorcycles, and Sports Car Racing. These programs on Speedvision are the only reason that I purchased DSS, and I will drop the service if these programs don't continue. It would be a mistake to not continue coverage of F-1. I really think that the F-1 crowd is starting to consist more and more of Americans. Very evident at Indy this year...GQ

here's a quote from the Speedvision homepage read it and weep:
Liberatore also announced that the popular Inside Winston Cup program, shelved earlier this year, would return to the network's weekly programming line-up. The new and improved show will benefit tremendously from Fox Sports' national television partnership with NASCAR. Inside Winston Cup provides highlights and results from the week's NASCAR action from the unique, in-depth perspective of the racers themselves. Other NASCAR-themed programs are in development.
I think you all might be taking this the wrong way...it is afterall a speed based network. I agree, 24 hours of Nascar (or any one motorsports coverage for that matter) would drive me away. But if they are just adding Nascar coverage to the current lineup (leaving all the great WRC, SCCA, Touring Car, etc.) I don't have a problem with it. Imagine if you will, Speedvison, without all those boring infomercials, airplane shows and boat repair shows, with more coverage of the things you like tossed in with more Nascar coverage. Is that so bad. Plus since Nascar owns the ALMS series, the one being renamed IMSA next year (how many of you knew all this?) maybe we'll get more ALMS coverage as well. Nobody knows for sure what is going to happen. Hopefully we will only gain coverage of all motorsports events.
Sometimes I wonder why everyone makes such a big deal about all this, myself, I would rather watch any motorsports event (weather it be WRC, Nascar, SCCA, Touring Car, ALMS, Lawn mower racing, etc.) than sit through all that other crap on the big three networks.

I believe that most of this started when it was announced that Speedvision was going to be changed to the NASCAR Channel. As long as F-1, WRC, sports car racing and a few other programs remain on, I will be fine with it. Yes, Speedvision can most certainly do away with boating, and most aviation programs.

In some press release they say that are keeping the current content but adding NASCRAP to it.
BUT they implied in the future they are gonna wean off the good stuff and add more NASCRAP
If they do we should make our own channel!
Formula 1 + WRC + SCCA (everything) + BTCC + DTM + JGTC + Australian Touring Car (forgot the name) + All the bike racing.
YUM!

I completely agree with Opie. I don't think Murdoch is an idiot. He knows what he's buying: our eyeballs. I find it hard to believe that he would blow off the enthusiast franchise of the Speedvision brand. I've said this before, less boats and planes and more of any motorsports is OK with me.

Why does everyone spaz out about this every time this is posted? 70% of the time when I turn on Speedvision it is crap such as:
Some moron lighting his hood on fire to show that his wax is great at protecting your hood from small lighter fluid based fires (or lasers). The next time I am attacked by a crowd of lighter fluid wielding thugs with laser cannons I will personally apologize to this guy.
Some guy with a weird mustache getting stiff over a 1967 GTO with the deep chrome door locks. "Only 27 were built with these door locks!"
A show about a plane that has been covered on Discovery Wings so many times that they are interviewing the guy who negtioated the final rivet contract.
Some guy showing how to remove slime from your anchor chain.
A "car show" that is nothing but a bunch of stealth ads about the new tie down system available for your F-150. "Wow Jim, this is oooonnnneeee slick tie down system. Where can I buy it?"
and so on.
They can take it all off and show all the damned NASCAR they want. I love watching the old stuff with Richard Petty and crew duking it out at 175MPH in cars where the bumber becomes a javelin in a crash. They are not turning this into all NASCAR all the time so chill out.

Speedvision/Rally Solution... kinda
Okay! I have it!!! Let Speedvision change... let them change their name to "The Speed Channel". Let them get rid of rally racing
However... Some of us have to know someone in the industry of television. So let "us" make our own Rally Channel! Then all of the NASCAR people will go off into their own little world and the rest of us will watch the Rally Channel! "The Speed Channel" will go down in ratings and the Rally Channel will sky-rocket to the top. We'll even hold other networks, like Motorcycle racing, 24-Hour LeMans racing, etc. So what do you say? Shall we put up a fight? I'm sure that there are some producers out there that have Subarus and/or have an interest in rallying, motorcycles, boats, LM racing, etc.
I know  I'm being not too realistic... but that would be fun! So shall we start something new and creative... unlike those "other" channels?!?! :D

I'll admit it I'm a little concerned about what's going to happen. But if they get rid of the airplane and boat stuff.
And keep everything else while add some Nascar stuff I'll be okay with it. I've already sent email's both to Speedvision and FoxSport's Net.
About the change and told if they take off rallying, sports cars, F1, and program's like MotorSport's Mondial and Motorvision off.
I'll cut the package that has Speedvision on it and get one of cable package's on instead.
And pretty soon I'm planning to on keep sending them email's just to make a pest of myself. :)

Often it seems when I turn on Speedvision, I catch either motorcycle racing, boat stuff, or airplanes. Then I catch WRC or F1, or GT or Touring Car races, and I get a thrill.
I can accept more NASCAR coverage on Speedvision, and I don't care what name they call it by. As long as they keep the other motorsports coverage. If they start dropping the stuff I like to watch, I'll drop cable, since that's all I got cable for. NASCAR is okay, but not my favorite motorsport.

Huh? Maybe you're thinking of the Motorola Cup/Grand AM Series that NASCAR bought into? No relation, and in fact in direct competition for fan base with the ALMS. Is there something I misunderstood about the IMSA rebirth?

Anyway, their (FOX's) mantra has already changed since last July. First it was "don't expect many changes beyond the addition of some NASCAR content", it has progressed to "certain programming will be reduced". Motorsport Mundial was specifically mentioned as being irrelevant to the North American audience and thus not needed. Although I signed the petition back a few months I started this off thinking we'd only lose a bit here and there. I now fear FOX will go too far.

Man and I thought being in the right seat was nuts! Rally fans are more rabid that the competitors (as Brockway Mt. at LSPR this year taught us).
I signed that petition months ago I believe. I'm also a pilot so aviation programming is sometimes cool on SpeedVision as well. Don't discount it so much. Aside from the boats and some motorsports I don't like SpeedVision was a channel I could almost always rely on for something to watch.
However if you really want to see the best rally footage available then you've gotta buddy-up with a team and get a copy of their in-car footage. Listening to driver/co-driver banter is always amusing, especially on just plain SCCA ClubRally competitors :D
Example:
driver: "that turn was a little early"
codriver: "what turn?"
driver: "that blind 90-left with the big tree on the outside!"
codriver: "tree?"
driver: "lemme see that route book"
codriver: "you aren't qualified"
driver: "what?!"
codriver: "oops, now look what you made me do"
driver: "WHAT?!"
codriver: "ah, that's a hairpin right about 20 feet ahead. don't wad up the car in the spectators, eh"
driver: "AIIIEEEEE!"
and so on...
Always thought rally coverage would be so much more colorful with in-car highlights like this.
Disclaimer: above example has never been experienced by the author of this post. It is merely a fictional event...yeah...that's the ticket ;)

Example:
driver: "that turn was a little early"
codriver: "what turn?"
driver: "that blind 90-left with the big tree on the outside!"
codriver: "tree?"
driver: "lemme see that route book"
codriver: "you aren't qualified"
driver: "what?!"
codriver: "oops, now look what you made me do"
driver: "WHAT?!"
codriver: "ah, that's a hairpin right about 20 feet ahead. don't wad up the car in the spectators, eh"
driver: "AIIIEEEEE!"
and so on...
Always thought rally coverage would be so much more colorful with in-car highlights like this.
Disclaimer: above example has never been experienced by the author of this post. It is merely a fictional event...yeah...that's the ticket ;)

They already have enough NASCAR coverage. And they show it during prime time hours.
And I like watching "My Classic Car". They teach alot about old school cars. But I think They need more car repair shows, like shade-tree mechanics. But the bottom line is that they already show enough NASCAR and they really dont need to show more. I mean what else CAN they show? Its gonna be pretty repetition galore. And i also wouldnt mind some Japanese track coverage. Those races to me are pretty cool because they have cars you usually dont se here, like Skylines and such.

Who you calling bitch? Don't make me come over and pimpslap you. :)
I actually like the guy with the funny mustache, you have to admit that he is kind of a dork. I have owned 2 SS Chevelles and a 6.6 litre Trans Am, I also own a 1963 Sunbeam Alpine Series III GT so I can appreciate car shows. I'd just rather have racing on.

Argh, I just wrote a whole post and when I went to send it, the board server had logged me out. Is this a new thing...logging out users if they have been inactive for several minutes, ie: typing a reply? Grrrrr!
Basically what I tried to say was that I too fear the loss of rally, F1 and touring car coverage. It would certainly put a damper on my growing automotive racing interest. What concerns me though is how easily people are discounting other forms of Speedvision coverage. Several people that have replied to this thread have said things such as "Speedvision can most certainly do away with boating, motocross and most aviation programs."
So that leads me to ask, does anyone else notice the contradiction in a statement like that? Here we are complaining that the corporate big wigs of the 'Speed Channel' better not ditch the rally coverage or the Grand touring series, etc. But then we are quick to discount Speedvision shows that we either dont have an appreciation for or an interest in. Is that really fair to do? The beauty of Speedvision is that it is a channel dedicated to all things speed or for that matter all things motorsport. Whether it be aviation, SCCA Prorally or 24hrs of Lemans. We should not be quick to judge the worthiness of other programs because that is exactly what we are afraid of Speedvision doing in the first place. Besides dont you think that there are other people out there who enjoy "Sport Flying" or "Ship Shape" and are just as concerned in loosing shows that they enjoy? Think about it, what value could a boardroom full of greedy 'Speed Channel' executives possibly see in continuing coverage of some noisy rally cars, or the mainly European based Formula 1? If you can see getting rid of one show-why not get rid of them all? Hell we can talk NASCAR all day long. "Is that Dale Jarrett with a new sponsor on the hood? Story at 12, 5, 8, and 10!" Yikes Where all in this together. :alien: :alien:
Not a flame just a thought.

I guess I think of Speedvision/Speed Channel as being devoted to motorsports. Maybe that's right maybe it's not. If it is devoted to motorsports then NASCAR is a better fit then boating or aviation. If you like aviation then perhaps Discovery Wings would be a better channel to watch. If you like boats then perhaps you should call me the next time you go out. :)
Obviously, I am not as upset as some about this subject. I have signed the petition and as long as they keep the present coverage level of motorsports then I am happy. I really don't think that it is in Fox's best interest to alienate the current Speedvision subscribers. They are not supid people, they know that there are a lagre number of people that watch for the other stuff.

speedchannel programing update
Updated the 27th of oct. Speedchannel/Speedvision will continue to cover WRC for 2002. So all our grips seem to be answered for next year.
Long Live Rally Racing.

Well, imagine that...looks like those dire predictions haven't yet come to pass. They eventually might, but as I cautioned in one of the many "Speedvision is dying" threads, wait and see. We might not get all 24 hours of LeMans, but Fox would in inSANE to totally diss the people that made that network profitable, and a suitable acquisition target.
But, when they get the number of subscriber homes up, look out...

Here's A Little Email I Just Sent Them.
Question Number One: What about SCCA ProRally is that still a go for 2002?
Question Number Two: How long will both program's be?
Question Number Three: Will you expand coverage's for both next year? Say an hour and a half (maybe two hours?) the WRC and a hour (maybe an hour and a half?) for the SCCA ProRally.
If you keep these (and expand the coverage) and the same coverage for the Grand Slam.
I will be a VERY HAPPY VIEWER.
Yours Humbly,
A.D.K.
