How to replace your trunk tension rods part 1

Jonnyfilmboy 11-26-2004 10:53 PM

How to replace your trunk tension rods
If you add or remove a rear spoiler on the Impreza, and you want your trunk to pop up when you open it, or you don't want it to catapult when you open it, you will need to replace the tension rods. I believe there are three sets of tension rods. WRX-no spoiler, WRX-stock spoiler, and STI. These are arranged from weakest to strongest.

Overall, this mod is easy. Literally a 20 minute job. And if you know what you are doing, it can probably be a 10 minute job. All it takes is a little knowledge about what to do and what not to do, and a little bravery. This mod isn't dangerous if you know how to do it. The guy at the dealership says that it is such a huge and involved job that the regular guys hand it off to the body shop people. He said it takes a long time and can be dangerous. But he didn't really know. It's easy.

This mod was performed on my 2004 WRX. No guarantees that it will work on your car. The usual disclaimers apply. A word of caution: These rods are spring-loaded and if you are not careful, you might get hurt. Be careful and look two or three times before you leap. I don't recommend drinking alcohol when doing this. Save it for later.

TOOLS NEEDED:
KNEE PROTECTION - The best way I found to do this was to just kneel in front of the open trunk. I am 6'1" and didn't have trouble reaching anything. If you are shorter than me, you might want to put some of these pads on a crate or something stable that won't move. I used gardening pads that I found in my p's garage.

LONG FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER - You should only need one. But if you screw up one of the steps, you will need two. Use a thicker screwdriver if you have one. It will be easier to hold on to when tensioning the spring.

THICK GLOVES - If you lose a grip on the tension rod, it MIGHT spring back and pinch your fingers. If it is cold, that sucks. This didn't happen to me, but you know. Just wear some gloves, just in case.

TRUNK SUPPORT - I used an ice scraper with a variable-length handle. You can also use a shower curtain rod. Something that can change length is best because it will be hard to find something of the perfect length, but anything that will hold the trunk COMPLETELY open will work. I originally tried to do this mod without this, and then the trunk hit my head as soon as I touched the first tension rod.

DETAILS:
This is how the trunk rods work. There are two of them. One for each side. The rod uses the build-in energy of spring steel to push against the back of the car (back seat) and the arms of the trunk lid. By twisting the rod, the energy increases. So when the trunk lid is closed, there is the most tension. When the trunk lid is open, there is less tension. Hence, the trunk lid wants to open when the latch is released.

LEFT SIDE OF DRIVERS-SIDE TENSION ROD - Note, that this is the STI rod, already installed. It is glossy black. This pic is to show how the rod interfaces with the trunk lid arm. See the hinge-looking thing attached to the lid arm? That moves toward you and out of the way once the tension rod is pulled down and away from it. Also note that there is nothing holding the rod in place other than its own tension. Nothing to unscrew or unbolt.

RIGHT SIDE OF PASSENGER-SIDE TENSION ROD DETAIL

CROSS PIECE ON TRUNK ROD - Note how the cross piece helps facilitate the use of a screwdriver. Without this cross piece, this would be a MUCH more difficult mod to perform.

ROD REMOVAL:
Step 1 - Look at how the rods work. Stick your knees on the pads, kneel in front of the trunk, and open and close the trunk slowly to see how the rods interface with the trunk lid. Notice that the left side rod has to come off first to get to the right side underneath. Follow the rod with your hands and see how it is fit into the back seat firewall one one end, and how the other end is hooked into the back seat firewall and braces against the trunk lid arm. The trunk lid arm has a hinged guide that can be flipped up.

Step 2 - Brace the trunk on the right hand corner so that it will not move and so that the lid is open completely.

Step 3 - Start on the DRIVERS-SIDE tension rod. Place the long blade flat head screwdriver as shown bracing against the cross piece as shown in the previous picture. TENSION the tension rod at this position by bending the part of the rod facing you downward toward the ground as shown. Use your left hand to do this.

Step 4 - While keeping the rod tensioned, use your right hand to flip the hinged lid arm rod guide toward you and up until it is out of the way as shown.

Step 5 - See how the rod has a keeper in the middle of the trunk:

Take out the one closest to you. Just pull it down and toward you slightly so it is out of its keeper. It isn't hard.

Step 6a - Now that the hinged guide is up and out of the way, release as much tension from the rod as possible by rotating the part of the rod facing you upward and toward the sky. Try not to let go of the rod. (If the rod slips off of the screwdriver, use the other screwdriver to get it back on.) Now, with a gloved hand, pull the back of the rod (the part furthest away from you) up and out of the hook as shown.

Even with the STI rod, this doesn't take that much strength to do.

Step 6b - CAUTION: At this point, if you release the rod completely off of the screwdriver and let go of it, it will pop out of its mount on the right and scare the heck out of you. It could possibly injure you if you are close to it, so keep your gloved hand on it and slowly lower the rod toward the trunk floor releasing the tension as you go (by rotating the end closest to you toward the sky).

Step 7 - The drivers-side rod can now be pulled out on the right:

REPEAT FOR THE PASSENGER-SIDE TENSION ROD. Make sure to move your trunk lid support to the left corner so it will be out of your way when working on the passenger-side rod.

INSTALLATION IS REVERSE OF REMOVAL. Once you have the rod installed, I had to give it a good whack to place it in the correct position on the guide. This is where the gloves come in handy as well.

I hope these detailed instructions help someone out there.

Thanks for that write-up....I know lots of d00ds that will appreciate it ;)
subiekid 11-26-2004 11:04 PM

I had the dealer install the spoiler on my car and they never swaped out the tension bars. Last time I went in they said they could not order just the tension bars, now I am kinda pissed.

But good write up.
Jejunum 11-26-2004 11:07 PM

awsome thanks alot Jonnyfilmboy. Got an extra tension rod to sell now? ( i need one that will support a stock spoiler...)

I have an extra set of spoiler rods...
Jonnyfilmboy 11-27-2004 12:31 AM

Subiekid, I just went to a Subie dealer and asked to order the STI tension rods. A few behind the counter asked me what happened to my last tension rods. Didn't understand what I was doing, but I had no prob ordering 'em.

Jejunum, I don't know which ones I have. I might have either the spoiler or non-spoiler ones. Not sure how to check. If I find part numbers, I'll get back to you.
SUBE555 12-29-2004 11:12 PM

Can you tell me how much they cost?
Versus 12-30-2004 02:35 AM

yes. you also need to remove the tension rods completely if you use a very light CF trunk like the monstersport one.

Update
I have a Zerosports spoiler which I assumed would be just as heavy as the STI spoiler since they are about the same size. It wasn't and when I would pop my trunk, the trunk lid would move up pretty quickly. I didn't like that as it seemed dangerous to anyone standing back there with all that mass shooting upward in an instant.

Solution: There are holes in the arms that hold the trunk. I attached short bungee cords (short as in 6 inches or so in length) to each side, running them from the holes in the arms to the tension rods. Worked like charm and the royal blue bungee cords look cool, I think. If they were black you wouldn't even notice them. Now when I hit the trunk release, the trunk raises a lot more smoothly and less quickly to a point almost verticle.

Hope this helps fine tune things for people.

Swaping tension rods
Thank you for a beautifully illustrated step by step proceedure.
ToesWRX 08-10-2005 11:06 AM

great how-to, i used it to install sti tension rods after i swapped trunks for an sti wing.
pyork03 08-10-2005 04:22 PM

Does anybody know if the non spoiler tension rods will work on a carbon fiber trunk? I want it to work like stock and with no tension rod the trunk wont stay up on its own, it just flings around freely.
Hey_Allen 09-05-2005 01:32 AM

If swapping to a CF trunk lid, you might try using only 1 tensioner rod and see how it does.
Depending on how sturdy the lid frame is, the lid might twist, but from the look of all the ones that I've seen, they should be sturdy enough to have no problem with it.

Maybe install the one on the side you tend to push down on when you close the trunk? *shrugs*
hatchy 10-04-2005 02:43 AM

Would 02+ tension rods from a wrx work in a 2004 sti?
DancherBoi 10-04-2005 10:42 PM

Nice Mod!
I've had my '02 WRX for a year now, and my trunk lid will only stay open when it is opened fully. Otherwise it slams shut with no resistance to hold it open. I keep hitting my head on this thing. I had no idea why it was this way since there were no hydrolics. At the same time, I had a feeling that the spoiler (albeit a stock factory spoiler) was not installed at the factory because the wire that connected the spoiler brake light was exposed slightly beneath the trunk lid and did not look like a factory wire connection job.

After I read your post, I put the two together. One of the previous owners must have installed a factory spoiler aftermarket, but didn't mind about the support the trunk would need with the extra weight of the spoiler.

Sure enough, I called my local dealer and talked with their parts department. They looked up my VIN and determined that indeed this WRX was manufactured without a spoiler.

Before I move further, I decided to try to remove a tension rod to see if I could do it with these instructions. Man, it is easy with this procedure.

Now my dealer wants $70 for new tension rods (35 each for left and right). I am going to first call around to salvage yards in the area to see if I can locate one.

Thanks for the tip! I can now take care of this issue that has been an annoyance since I bought this vehicle. Nice work!
Jonnyfilmboy 10-04-2005 11:27 PM

Take a look at Subiegal's website. I think she sells them for cheaper.

Update on the bungie cord idea: A few months later, I removed the bungie cords. Now I pop the release, trunk raises to about 60 degrees more or less (forgot my protractor), and I can raise it the rest of the way easily. Apparently it took a bit of time for the tension rods to age and weaken. Now they are perfect.

So there you go. I'm glad you guys find this thread useful! :)
Hey_Allen 10-05-2005 01:02 AM

As far as the springs from an '02 WRX in an '04 STI, yes, they fit just fine.

I swapped my '04 STI's winged trunk lid and springs with a bare trunk lidded '02 (maybe 03, but I believe 2002) WRX, with no problem.
Personally, I found it easy to just grab them with both hands and pull them out, no need for other tools. Just apply more tension to them untill they are rotated off the perch, flip the perch out of the way, then gently release the tension.

I think the hardest part of the swap that I did was swapping out the rear deck, inside the rear window. I didn't want to cut a hole in my deck, and the guy I swapped with didn't want a hole remaining in his car's deck.
WRXINTX 10-05-2005 10:36 AM

what do ya'll think about a carbon fiber street concepts trunk with an STI wing on it???

what tension rods should I use?

Stock WRX with spoiler maybe?

Thanks!!

Great right up. Can you go springless with a C/F trunk?
psychoskip 02-03-2006 12:26 PM

excellent write-up...thanks a million!
psychoskip 02-03-2006 12:36 PM

one question, what if you remove the lid first then do the tension rods? which is better?
Hey_Allen 02-04-2006 02:20 AM

Personally, I think I WOULD remove the trunk lid, then the rods. When the rods are in, it helps to hold the lid up, as well as keeping the trunk lid bolts stationary and easy to access. If you remove them first, you get to mess with the lid flopping around while you try to remove the bolts.

Just my thought on the matter, though!
steeter 02-04-2006 12:47 PM

Nice write up..

question..

If I install the STi tension rods, can I put an STI badge on my car? Would that be rice.....lol :D

<--
o2sys 02-04-2006 01:27 PM

ppl who do the sti trunk swap please change your tension springs....it gets real annoying
Jonnyfilmboy 02-05-2006 12:35 AM
Great right up. Can you go springless with a C/F trunk?
No way. You will need something to help raise the trunk and keep it up. If you have no springs, any stray wind will catch your trunk and send it crashing down on your head or back when you have it stuck in there grabbing for loose ammo in the back of the trunk.
Jonnyfilmboy 02-05-2006 12:37 AM
one question, what if you remove the lid first then do the tension rods? which is better?
Not sure. But if I had to guess, I would say keep the springs on there. I think it will be easier to mount the lid if the springs are both in one place (fully extended).
Jonnyfilmboy 02-05-2006 12:42 AM
Nice write up..

question..

If I install the STi tension rods, can I put an STI badge on my car? Would that be rice.....lol :D

<--
Yes, that is allowed. But if you think about it, the STi badge itself can be considered "something STi" that you have put on your car. So just put the badge on and you are DONE! If someone arrogantly asks you what STi mods are on your car, look at them strangely and point to the badge.

Kosmic 05-01-2006 11:40 PM

wOOt! I needed that informations for a trunk lid swap. Thanks for the write-up.
CarbineReloaded 05-13-2006 08:28 PM

Question for the masses.

I am getting rid of the STI spoiler on my car and going wingless.... However I'm not swapping trunks with anyone, I have a spare I'm going to use -- and I'm going to put the wing on for "track days".

Right now, if I pop the trunk with my wingless lid on, it wants to go through the rear window -- I love the fact that it opens completely, I'm just not thrilled how fast it moves.

Wondering how it would react to haveing springs from a WRX trunklid on it. Would that still open it all the way, just with less force?
InfamousDX 05-14-2006 02:55 AM

definitely wear mechanix or thick gloves... those things can PINCH if given the opportunity :p

thanks for doing this!

Just wanted to bump this. Extremely helpful. The tension springs were adding to the symphony of clunks in the back. Now that I've removed them it's one sound gone and it's helped me isolate the noise to the strut/top mount area.

Thanks again for the write up.

Currently running spoiler ++++ Dynamat for rattle response on trunk 05 STI. I need somethin with bigger nuts than the sti stock bars. Anyone got suggestion? The back of my head is starting to hurt.

I'm having trouble swapping the tension rods.

I got a spare trunk, and the tension rods for a wingless Impreza, but can't seem to fit the wingless rods in.

The section of the rod that contacts the hinge (the upside down U shape with the bar across it) doesn't fit, and even if I was able to get it into the slots, it would take a lot of force to get it to fit into the hinge, and the trunk would open with more force than if the STi rods were in there.

Someone please help me. This is driving me nuts.
RedefinedTR 12-08-2007 12:21 PM

Just did mine, very nice write up. Only took me like 20 min total to pull my trunk and springs myself. Also did it with the lid off, made it very easy.

RedefinedTR 12-09-2007 12:12 PM

Just an update, it was eaven eaiser doing it on my buddy's STI. And than sticing them back in was a breese also. I suggest using a prybar tho. Only becasue if something did slip you are farther away, and the bent tip keeps the spring on the bar so it does not have as much chance to slip.

Took me about 10 min total to swap bars on both cars.

Awesome write-up. thank you so much! If every job was this well documented, we all might get away without mechanics!

Just wanted to revive this valuable tread and thank you. I worked in the heat for 1 hour, the came back, read your tread and went back out, completed the job safely in less than 10 minutes.
I used long needle nose pliers instead of a flat screwdriver. I found that mine had a tendency to slile, and it seemed dangerous. the pliers securely grabbed and kept in place. Then i used the flat screwdriver to giud in place.
I did this as a one man job, no helper, but with the trunk off. I reccomend this configuration.
