jskho,
I also have the misterjung kit and EDM projectors and my lights look exactly like wrx_fun's lights. Make sure that the bulbs are seated properly in the lights. One of mine was not seated properly at first and I had hardly any light on that side, once I fixed it everything was fine.

If you have light coming out the back it's a sign that the bulbs are not seating correctly. Since the HID bulbs you have are longer than the stock ones it is possible that there is something in the housing that physically prevents them from going in all the way. Take something long and thin like a screwdriver and insert it in the opening until it stops, then measure how far it goes in and compare that to the length of the bulb.

you guys are right. the focal point is the main difference with my light output.. i think i might have a bad set of projectors.. because the projectors came stock with an H1 bulb.. i put back the stock bulb on one side and the hid on the other side.. and compare.. both have the same light output in terms of coverage.. there is the top cutoff then on the bottom there is not light. but when i loosen the mount where the bulbs stick onto and angle the bulb slighty downward i get the light for the bottome but the bottom part has a huge v shape kind of light...

If you have bad projectors wouldn't they have had bad light output before you put in the HIDs too?

I give up...........Anyone interested in buying projectors with HID??? (hehe)
Tried everything. I just can't seem to get the maximum HID output. Tried measuring focal point, comparing brightness among stock bulb and HID bulb resulted in close to the same brightness and light pattern, I'm 100% positive the bulb sits securely in the housing after troubleshooting endless amount of hours. I have no luck with HIDs...give up. I'll keep you guys posted with anything new. Thanks for all you guys help.

any suggestions on what i should do.. i got the EDM projectors from a group buy awhile ago.. i think of all things i happen to receive the defective one.. you guys think there might be any chance i can get a replacement ??? or should i just cut my lost. and buy another set.. all websites i visited have the jdm.. i would love to get the EDM but if i cant i guess i will have to settle for the JDM.. which place has the lowest price.. since i think i am out about $700 already..:(

I suggest that before you throw these lights away or spend any more money, you find someone in your local area who is knowledgeable with regard to lighting/electrical stuff and have them take a look at it. I'm sure if you post in your local forum asking for help you'll get a response.
I'd be happy to check this out for you, but I'm just a bit too far away.

Try Mike or Tommy at MPJ Performance. They are located in the Bay area and they MAY be able to help out you - or give you someone to contact since they tune cars all the time. Their Website is www.mpjperformance.com From there, you can either e-mail them or call them. I believe Tommy has the STi lights or I'm sure one of their customers have the STi lights. Keep us informed man. Don't give up...you will find a definite solution soon enough...

Did you say you drilled a hole in the back of your lights that light is coming out of? Might I ask why?

the sti projectors have a metal plate that the H1 bulbs sits on.. it is secure by a metal prong.. a plastic cap covers the back end. i drill the hole on that plastic cap.
thanks for the tip.. i will head out there to see if they can fix it. you guys are great.. hopefully they can help me out..

Please post the final results here so we all know what happened. I'm sure that others doing similar installs will find it helpful as well.
| jskho | 03-08-2003 01:11 PM |
i will definitely post the results. so others dont have to go through what i went through.. im heading over there right now.. good thing is they open on saturday til 1pm
| jskho | 03-08-2003 07:44 PM |
went the MPJ performance for advice.. will try to either sand down the housing that way the lights sits a bit more in or put washer between the housing and the bracket to sit the light a bit more out. to see which gives better results.. if that still doesnt do the trick, i guess i will have to contact Brian to see if anything can be done to have my projectors replaced?? since i got it from the group buy a while ago i think the likelihood of me getting an exchange is slim..:( . right now back to the lab with the projectors..

I got these projectors through a group buy a while back , a have not receive a reply from that person in about 2 weeks now. Geez man - I hate to see a fellow brother suffering when a mod like this should have been full of bliss. I don't know what else to tell - doesn't like the what was recommended at MPJ helped out either. Any update on what youre going to do? What is the vendor you bought your STi lights from (not the HID's)?

Hi guys,
I read in the post at intellexual.net regarding HIDs that the d2r bulbs are for headlights with reflectors and d2s bulb are for projector headlights.
Am just wondering if anyone has fitted d2r bulbs in his projectors and what the results were?
Reason I am asking is because I have JDM projectors and I can get a good deal on Hella ballasts with d2r bulbs but they don't have the d2s.

I'm willing to bet it's the bulbs. The lights were designed for halogen bulbs and the filaments they use. HIDs are going to be a compromise any way you slice it since they don't match the lens' optics. It sounds like you got a particularly mis-aligned HID H1. As the discussion goes, this isn't usually a big problem.

im still playing around with it.. keeping alive a bit of hope.. hate to face that fact that i am out some $650.. i think its the projector since the factor halogen bulb does the same exact thing. i guess i will need to find someone near me who has the same sti projectors and willing to do some experiment with me..:D :D

Any news?? Did you ever figure out what was wrong?
| igoeasy | 10-08-2003 12:39 AM |
i may have the same problem as original poster as I thought my EDM projectors luminated alot less than stockers when I first got them. I notice the same dark oval blockout below the cutoff line as well as the hotspot.
Since replacing the bulbs with Phillips ultras, I have yet to really tweak it around as I dont drive in dark roads much to really fix it. But I believe there may be chance we have the same set of projectors as I also got mine from the $650 Groupbuy.
I'll take a look at it tomorow and post pics to see if we have the same dull light pattern.

Well...from what I've read on here, most owners of the STi headlights have generally given feedback that the light output of the lights are less than other projector units out there (Morrettes and Prodrives). Some have even tested the output side by side and swapped light units to see. Of course, this could be an isolated issue, but I'm starting to think that the STi lights (don't know if it's EDM or JDM or both) just doesn't put out as much light as some others. But they still look nice though :)
| V REX | 10-08-2003 11:00 PM |
My JDM HID's are very bright. I haven't compared them next to any of the others but I am very happy with their output. Maybe the regular projectors just aren't made to have HID bulbs...I know they look the same but maybe the projector is different.

by all rights the lower temp 4800k kit should have been a LOT whiter than the 6000k bulbs. I've had my 4100k's side-by-side with 6000k's (my kit's from xenondepot) and it was very obvious my set was brighter AND whiter.
i think you just had a bad set of bulbs.
