STPR talk about it here!
Ok the Susquehannock Trail ProRally (STPR) starts this weekend. STPR has grown to become one of the classic stage rallies in the country, winning the SCCA's "Best ProRally" award an unprecedented five times, in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998 and most recently in 2000. If you've never been to a rally this is the one to go see!
The course begins at The Green in Wellsboro on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. and takes about 14 hours to complete. Competitors cover a total of 315 miles, including 145 competitive miles in 10 stages. Rally teams travel through two counties on generally smooth and twisty Pennsylvania State Forest roads, at times bordering the famous "Grand Canyon of the East" located 10 miles west of Wellsboro.
Past Winners:
1992-1996 Paul Choiniere / Jeff Becker
1997 Carl Merrill / Lance Smith
1998 Frank Sprongl / Dan Sprongl
1999 Paul Choiniere /Jeff Becker
2000 Karl Scheible / Russ Hughes
2001 Mark Lovell / Mike Kidd
Karl Scheible will be returning to STPR with his long time co-driver Russ Hughes. Karl won the event in 2000 with an Evo and this year will be driving in an Open class WRX STi prepared by Vermont SportsCar. This is the same car that Karl used to place 3rd overall at Rim last month. Karl has alot of experience at STPR and should be very fast.
What are your picks for this year? Some other notables to consider: A very strong field of Group N cars, check out the start list at http://www.stpr.org/stpr02/entry.html.

Talk about STPR......
1. The background image on all the pages on the STPR site is a picture I took! I've got a pic on the first page, and a bunch in the photo gallery.
2. This will be my 4th STPR
3. I'm going to be staying in a hunting cabin right in the middle of all the stages in Leetonia. There should be 5 stages within 3.5 miles of the cabin.
4. My predictions: (cut & pasted from another site)
Open:
1.) Mark Lovell - Impreza (nice roads, solid car & good driving = win)
2.) Mark Higgins - Tiburon (car stays together)
3.) David Higgins - Impreza (still gets podium finish)
4.) Ramana Lagemann - Impreza (solid run)
5.) Rhys Millen - Evo 7 (smooth roads & prep time on the car yields decent finish)
6.) Mark Nelson - Evo 6 (steady race)
7.) Karl Scheible - Impreza (has trouble in the day, makes up time in the night stages
Group N:
1.) Mark Utecht - Impreza (fast fast fast)
2.) Ralph Kosmides - Impreza (a hair behind 1st)
3.) Henry Krolikowski - Impreza (a hair behind the others)
Group 5:
1.) Brian Hourt - Integra (a given unless he crashes. he'll be more careful after the Cherokee incident)
2.) Dave Hintz - RX-7 (i haven't given him a chance all year. i will this time)
3.) Al Kaumeheiwa - Neon (a nice run for 3rd place)
Group 2:
1.) Bill Malik - Volvo (a non-rough event lets him run w/o breaking)
2.) Lauchlin O'Sullivan - Lancer (smooth)
3.) Eric Burmeister - Protege (a fluke flat early sets him back)
Production GT:
1.) Bruce Perry - Eclipse (a high overall finish)
2.) Craig Peeper - WRX (steady drive)
3.) Greg Healey - Impreza (a hair behind 2nd place)
Production:
1.) Jeff Field - Celica (a gimme)
2.) Ted Mendham - Sentra (always at the top of P class)
3.) Mike Halley - Beetle (faster if he doesn't use his blinkers )

Lets hope Sunoco brings good fuel this time around ;)
BTW, probably not as much presence from Subaru "corporate" there this year, as SOA's national dealer meeting is in Chicago this weekend. Nice logistics SOA

Everybody is picking Lovell as first but I doubt it.... It depends on what conditions where going to get.... dry and dusty? or rain and slick roads?
but here's my list.....
overall:
Higgins in his Tiburon will take it....
Burke
Lovell
Scheible...
Lagemann will DNF (with an off)..... Millen (mechanical), Choiniere (off), D. Higgens will be in the top 10.... but mechanical problems...
I would love to see John Kemp finish in the top 5.....

Yep...RalliSpec will be there running...car 964.
But an outright win would be slightly optimistic :) We will settle for just finishing the event.
As for my picks...can't comment on our open class competitors....but for Group N watch out for Mark Utecht in his WRX originally built, and now sponsored, by RalliSpec! Mark will be running RalliSpec logos on his car for the first time this weekend. To be debuted this event are some STi parts and a RalliSpec custom turbo-back exhaust system to help bring the car up to spec. He should be very quick provided the gearbox holds together!
See you all on the green at STPR!

Well, that sucked! I drove like crap again and finished--as predicted--below the middle. The roads were so nice and fast the speeds were incredible. There were course notes this year which helped and hurt. It's great to know what's over a crest, but I find I slow down more when I know how tight an upcoming corner is. :D
The Rallispec Celica had some bad luck, but i-Cubber Randy Zimmer had a decent run in his rare Impreza "lightweight edition". ;) Tom Brann (TOMMY B) had a good turn of speed even with his *gasp* *choke* 32mm restrictor. Jason Rivas (JER) went off a cliff after a good start.
The Higgens brothers really raised the bar though, breaking some stage records by more than 10%! It was good to see the AV Sport private effort stick it to the overfunded Prodrive team yet again. :D

Another great year at stpr. The gods love that rally. The people that planned the spectator points should be flogged though. Only one morning specator point, so it was a mob at the rally crossing while the better place to watch a stage (asaph) was closed this year. And Deadman 1 was a great stage
( aside from getting a huge welt on my head from a rock that felt like it broke the freaking sound barrier) the only thing was it was going on practically the same time as the I-club stages (7-10) I had no idea and missed twelve mile this year. And decided to call it a day because I didn't want to have to kill close to two more hours to go up for the nigth stage. That and my knees felt like they were going to explode. I got to briefly meet some of the jersey i-clubbers and subaru had some cool swag for all. I proudly wore a subie tatoo on my forehead for a wrx hat:D It seemed that the cars that were really flyin all had a imprezza badge on them? Never seen soooo many nice rex's in one place either. Some real nice cars were driving all over town.

Great Year again! We had our own "private" Subaru corner half way through SS1, which proved to be awesome since we saw Seamus Burke go off practically right in front of us! Sucked for him but quite exciting to see. Ran up to make sure they were OK and I even got to crawl under the Lancer Evo to put out a leave fire :) What was even more exciting then that though, was being three feet away from the road when David Higgings came around the blind turn wide open, WRX in full drift, ALS banging like mad and getting showered with gravel!!! Awesome to say the least, but I'll take a few yards off the road behind a few trees anytime thank you!
As far as cars go, never have I seen so many good looking rally cars. All very nicely done. Looked like a Japanese Rally!
Only bad part was waiting to get out of the stage while they yanked Burke's Lancer from the side of the hill. A few other cars were on their way out, and one guy decides to unload their mornings beer cars right on the side of the road. So I walked down and told them to take the beer cans along, picked them up, and tossed them in the back of their truck. The next thing you know, one of them is trying to start a fight with my buddy by wiping his hands down the side of his now-dust-covered WRX yelling that he was from there and no "city boy" is going to tell him what to do and to put his car back on the boat to Japan" !!! Always a few meatballs screwing things up
Bummed out that Lovell didn't win and Ramana didn't have better luck(especially since he was kicking ass earlier in the day) but nice to see another WRX taking top honors. I've following D. Higgins since the earlier days when he was rallying WRXs for Barretts in the UK, so it's nice to see him doing well over here.
Just as a side note, I have heard that Hyundai's budget this year is easily as much as Subaru's(which is the same as last year) if not more, and that some of the "private" teams might as well be factory with the money they pour into their cars and equipment. OK, so it might not be good for the amature rally driver, but from a spectator's view I think its fantastic that we can see this caliber of driver and these car's here in the US.

I had a great time working. We were a bit surprised when we were told we not only had to work stages 7 and 10, but also stage 1. The Subaru WRX that crashed at the end of stage one was right in front of me. It was an impressive site, but I felt really bad for the driver/codriver. I also found it strange that the drivers improved greatly on stage 10 (night stage) compared to stage 7 (afternoon stage).
All of the I-Clubers I met were very cool. It was super fun working with the NJ I-Clubers (Jill, Mikey, Andy and the rest of you). We had too much fun on the night stage. Hopefully someone can post the video footage of Mikey "driving" the Honda rally car
I wanted to meet Tommy-B and the other Subaru drivers/co-drivers at the after rally dinner, but I was to damn tired. I didn't leave the last stage until after 1:30 am (plus I had the long drive into town). By the time I got to the Firemans Annex, I wasn't in the best mood. I just wanted to eat and go to sleep. Hopefully I'll meet you guy's next year.

It was the course notes. This is the first year STPR has had them, and they really help at night, where crests look like black holes.

Hey Jon,
Stages seven and ten were the same. I thought the only thing that changed on the course notes on stage ten was the off camber left turn that clamed many cars on stage seven. Stage ten was at night and the dust must have been really bad for you guys. So I would think the night stage would be more difficult. Right?

Well, unless you're insane :D , night should be slower than day. I know I was a few seconds slower on 8-10 than when we ran them the first time.
7 was actually dustier than 10 because they went from 1 min start intervals up through stage 7 to 2 min for 8-10.

Well, it was a good event........ 3rd one in spectating and the 2 canadian Subbie entries did very well...... Peter Thompson in his group N Subbie finished 7th overall and 1st in Group N and Julien and Marie-Eve Pilon in their PGT WRX finished 18th overall and 2nd in PGT.....
For Julien, it was a good run since he started 61st overall out of 90..... moving more than 40 spots up!
here's a pic of their car:

Great rally! I worked 1, right near the water hole as they spit dirt on all of us, then 7 & 10 at the finish. Took some neat pictures (need a place to put 'um up for free, any ideas.) It was definately interesting seeing how some of the cars were almost stock, while others (the pro drive wrx) were of course gutted. The water crossing was definately fun, the spectators were good until the end when they started getting bored.
Because I was working the finish, Nate (my co-capitan) let me drive the stage. All we had to do is stop at the big specator areas and talk with the crews working there. Of COURSE, no marshalls are there, so we have to wait for Dan who is letting people off at the spectator area. Well Dan apparently doesn't know where he has to stop, so I'm going about 50 up a hill, get over a blind crest and his big-ass Trailblazer is stopped (I have a Corolla, so I'm thinking instant death at that moment) I slam the brakes, hit the only patch of gravel on the road at about 30, and just miss his car two times as I sworve, trying to stay on the road too. As Dan gets out of his car and tells me what to do at the finish, he says NOTHING about the incident, and as I am still catching my breath.
Didn't get out of the finish until 3ish, I had NO IDEA how to get out so I had to wait for the co-capitain to leave, and he had to wait for everyone. By that time I was completely wasted from lack of sleep, and decided to get some coffee and pray I didn't hit anyone driving home. Got home at about 6, and slept basically all day.

Subaru factory efforts
Was nice to see the battle between Lovell and Higgins, with both pushing hard until the end... with all of the entries, there are not only battles throughout the classes, but all the top drivers have to push hard until the end.
Kudos to Subaru and Prodrive for bringing up US rallying in steps, rather than bringing a full works-spec WRC car in to swat everyone. They are using what they have to the fullest, but appear to be limiting what they have a bit so as to keep pace with rallying over here. Great show!
Kudos also to the i-club members for their effective marshalling on stage 10, we visited the spectator area and were quite impressed! Will probably start another thread on this...
Jon Kemp had a nice run, was great to still hear the Audi. He always seems so smooth and mistake free -
Regards,
Ken

Mega dittos to NNJ I-Club members at STPR
Hey all:
I wanted to take a second to give a hell-yeah to the NNJ I-Club members who worked Stage 1 with me and a friend at STPR. As a first time SCCA volunteer, it was great to see such a number of rally fans, and was equally great to run into a bunch from the Great State of New Jersey.
Even though I'll probably never be an Impreza owner (that right belongs to my friend Doug), I look forward to seeing all of you down the road at local events or future rallies in the area.
My friend and I ended up working as starters in SS7 and 10, which gave us a great chance to talk with a lot of the drivers (thanks to the unfortunate accident the 00 car had). I can't wait to do it again next year!

It was great working the rally. It was even better working the rally with the NJ crew. I can honestly say All of the NJ I-Clubers are insane. I worked three stages with you guy and had a blast. Too bad Cleveland is far away from you guy's.

stpr report
i-club guys,
Here's a note I wrote to friends about the STPR event. I can't get over how many Impezas can fit in a small town like Wellsboro or Palmdale. All you guys are nuts (in a good way). Thanks for the help working the stages, with all the new spectators showing up, the organizers really have their hands full. Hope you enjoyed the show and I hope I added to it. I tried to do my part at the water crossing and when I missed that hairpin left at night, I hope you weren't some of the people I sprayed - on both sides, film to follow...
-------
the car: '93 200,000 mile plus 2wd shell w/2001 RS bolted under it. All stock except alum. flywheel and button clutch disk, DMS and a large dia. rear bar.
-------
Hi all,
I skipped the bad news from RIM in LA because I didn't know what to say, getting tossed out for passing cars on a transit was a cruel end to a long trip out west. As the chief steward said, everyone does it but they don't pass the $&@#%ing Manager of Rally from SCCA. Anyway, instead of a possible 10th I got a DNF and a car still in perfect shape to run at STPR here in Wellsboro, PA.
There isn't a bunch to tell about this rally except that nothing bad happened, nothing broke or wore out and Shindle and I found ourselves moving up about 10 places in the last night leg to finish 16th. The water crossing strategy of going as fast as possible worked better than even expected, skipping across and staying drier than the creepers.
Experience with notes didn't keep me from wimping out in the beginning but I still almost lost it running a gear lower than the note on the same corner Burke went out on. That slide made a real impression on me and it took most of the rally before I started playing racer again. I waited until we were on roads we'd already run earlier.
This rally was super fast and had a field of even more potential winners than Cherokee Trails. The top of the field thinned out to two and then the rest fought for positions. Before dark, there were 15 cars running in the same minute as me. Some had problems or drove safer, others had real BIG problems and have some serious bodywork to do. Running 30th plus place at the last service I wondered when the big magic was going to happen and I almost gave up hope, whew!
16th may not sound like much, but if you follow the sport and look at the list, there are some real good teems filling up the fields this year. Notable finishers were Doug Shepherd's and Eoin McGeough's Talons and Peter Thomson's WRX. They had super good results along with Lachlin O'Sullivan who's Group 2 winning Mitsubishi was also the first non-turbo finisher, something I keep getting second place in.
John Drislane got a speeding ticket by the cops and was thrown out while leading a close battle for third with Mark Nelson while Subaru's Mark Lovell was caught by the SCCA radar and was given a 1/2 minute penalty.
Shindle wants to live in Canada I guess, after spending over a week in the Canadian Rockies finishing third in two events with former Ivan-man ACP, he ran STPR with me and now wants to go back up Canada to do the Black Bear again with me driving. I thew that one away on the last stage last year but I have a feeling running up front there this year won't be very easy... I'll let you know what happens.

Yes, you can do a slide show.
You can browse through all of the pics here:

Or if you want the slide show right away:

If you watch the slideshow, you'll miss the captions that I put in after not sleeping last night. (I slept this afternoon, if you're worried).

compliments to i-club @ STPR
Just wanted to write and complement the folks who worked from the I-club at STPR... we got to meet a good number of you and enjoyed it thoroughly!
What really prompted me to write was the excellent marshalling at the spectator area on Stage 10 (SPC). When we arrived, the marshall at the initial intersection was quite professional, explaining everything to newcomers and making a nice impression.
In recent years, the sweeper just west of the spectator area has gotten more and more popular, and with about five cars? hitting the bank in that area this year, the spectators were getting a bit raucous.
When we floated up to that corner, what I saw was particularly impressive. The marshalls had stationed themselves in among the spectators, with a very helpful forest ranger there as well. Rather than simply giving the spectators grief for being rowdy, they injected themselves into the equation, sometimes becoming the butt of jokes but laughing with everyone. It made everyone comfortable yet kept the control of the situation in the hands of the i-club / SCCA marshalls, and was simply masterful.
Nicely done! We hope that you can assist next year, I believe that the forestry folks were impressed.
Sincere Regards,
KC

Thanks Jessie,
Was it a problem parking at the water crossing?
We saw spectators hiking in from the campground during our transit and for sure they got there after the last cars had already gone through. Looked like they made some people hike from the campground 4 miles.

I was the guy shining a flashlight on people at Stage 10 at night and cheering for them for no reason, and I also tripped and fell crossing the road and me and RS22B had the fight in the woods, we were the only people acting like little kids.:D And shouting random movie lines between cars.
I had so much fun, but didnt meet any other I- Clubbers, we are planning on the Maine Rally also, we will be there.
We got to invite all the other I-Clubbers to our hotel for a party one night in Maine!!!!!!!!!

Hey that is my RS in the third picture. Billy is right about the Prodrive wing and I can also tell it is mine from the two stickers on my side window. I had so much fun at the rally on both days. They only thing that detracted from the fun was the fact that I was driving around on dirt roads with 17" P1's and street tires which made for an interesting drive out on Stage one and then an even more intersting and white knuckle drive out to our assingment on Stage 7/10 via Stage 6/9. All in all I had too much fun and I can't wait until Maine.

However, this is Randy Zimmer's thread - I just poked my head in because Randy's Impreza is an awesome color:

Randy:
Where were you parked at the green? I think that I missed your car as I went around. I would have said hi and taken a bunch of pictures.
