Would you buy my photoshopped wing hack???
Update 11-9-2010: This hack was physically DONE and completed a long time ago (as few may remember). More pictures and details are available at www.HamfistRacing.com
Long before I realized a 1:25 scale diecast replica STi wing would meet the rule requirements for SCCA Solo class STU, I envisioned and created a one off custom spoiler for the Subaru STi. The spoiler was sleek, subdued, OE looking and best of all it bolts directly to an OEM STi trunk covering all 17 existing holes punched out by the OEM whale wing. The reason I never ran this wing extensively was because a wingless trunk was that much more subdued (read sleeper) and lighter! For SCCA classing purposes, doubleside-taping the tiny replica wing at the race kept the rule-nazis quiet. I thought I would share my original custom spoiler with the rest of you here. Enjoy.

I am on the verge of attempting a serious STi wing hack. What do you all think? I know another member on NASIOC did something similar. The difference here will be that I will not be leaving any of the sides of the wing hanging off the trunk (over the rear quarter panels).

Please refrain from comments like: "Why don't you just buy limited wing, mines, etc..?"

Also, does any with experience doing body work have suggestions with regard to what to use to cut the spoiler with and what compound to use to reshape the parts that need to be smoothed up. I was thinking a dremel, various grit sandpaper, and bondo. Your input would be much appreciated.
Edit:

Okay, it looks like I am moving forward with an interesting custom wing hack I've been inventing in my head and on photoshop (AKA photochop). I bought a fiberglass replica wing and have begun to mark it up with cut lines to guide me through the hack. I'm gonna have to teach myself the basics of fiberglass. It's sure to be a learning experience. I think it will be worth it in the end. This finished product will hopefully look like this:

Here is what I got so far. This is a fiberglass replica STi wing I bought used. It's very rigid and I have a feeling cutting this fiberglass is going to make a big mess. I plan on gearing up and covering my body with long sleeves, pantsface mask, eye protection, etc... Fiberglass is real bad stuff (although I smoked menthol cigarettes for a while and those contained fiberglass).

Anyway, here's the wing thus far. it's been separated from the top half of the wing and marked up (several times) for where I plan on cutting:

This definitly has me curious. Keep this updated. Do you have a link from the other member that did something similar? If he just unscrewed the top half Ive seen it. Good luck man.

He went through the hacking and repainting process but still had some spoiler hanging over the rear quarter panel. Here are all the pictures of the previous members hack and the link to his thread. Also, please refrain from commenting on his lifted suspension. This thread is about the wing.

that white car is rad looking. I like both of these wing chops though. more class than rice.

why are all those pictures "sponsored by: TURBOCIVIC.com"? seem inapropriate at best.
4wdrift 03-17-2007 09:18 PM

Different. Can't say that I like it but different.
khail19 03-17-2007 09:33 PM

I think your photoshop looks great. I like the limited spoiler, but I'd rather have it stick up a little more like yours. I like having the brake light on the wing better too.
Imprezive_04 03-17-2007 09:38 PM

nascar spoiler FTL
CoopsCustomz 03-18-2007 12:49 AM

if I had a sedan i'd by it :D
awdbeast 03-18-2007 01:09 AM

Your version looks okay, the white one doesn't.
JohnnyWas 03-18-2007 01:13 AM

yeah, dude -- dont do anything that'll look like the white one -- your car looks so good as is

why dont you just trade me for my wrx wing ;)
imprezaowner27 03-18-2007 01:42 AM

the one you photoshoped looks awesome...it kinda looks like the wrx spoiler without the stock risers...

the white one looks stupid

Mechie3 03-18-2007 09:41 AM

IIRC some copany is already working on making a deck spoiler for those that wing near wingless but don't want to trade trunks. I think it was in one of garage spec's threads.
sTiknight 03-18-2007 05:48 PM

nope i like the whale wing better.
kennyvb 03-18-2007 06:04 PM

maybe
WReXd 03-18-2007 06:29 PM

I would so buy that, but only if it were <$200.
druxboyz 03-18-2007 06:29 PM

that white one's rear shot overhang screams rice already. so having the image hosted by turbocivic is a given. i like your idea of cutting that part off. good luck!

gonna make any more photoshops of rear and other views? side, above, direct rear.. etc
living4surf 03-18-2007 08:48 PM

greater than $100. No problem. I'll sell it to you when I am done for $10,000.
Handsdown 03-19-2007 12:48 AM

you can't offer services in this forum, especially without a vendor account.

and you sure as hell can't offer services that are that ugly.

actually complete something first, i doubt you'll be able to get something that looks much better than that white one.

Whats the matter? Too many photochops?
S1MPSONS 05-14-2007 12:50 AM

Round One, Hack inside the lines with a dremel:

Round Two, Fill it in the gap with some sloppy fiberglass:I started by mixing the resin and the liquid hardener. Then smeared the compound all over bunched up sheets of fiberglass and wedged them into the spoiler to fill the gap.

Round Three, Grind down the peripheral fiberglass and shape the edges/corners

Round Four, More Grinding and more fiberglass: I wasn't happy the way the corners were looking so I went to town with the dremel again. There really isn't much of a system here. I am learning as I go.

you can definitely attract a lot of those who don't like to BIG-WING look on their STI...

looks good so far

S1MPSONS 05-16-2007 02:35 AM

Round five. More Grinding, Sanding and Bondo: I spent 5 hours today finalizing the shape of the drivers side of the spoiler. I started by grinding down the new layers of fiberglass I laid down last time to create a more consistent shape. Then sanded and prepped for bondo. Let dry, sand, bondo, dry sand, bondo, dry, sand, etc...

man this is a nice idea you got going here. I like the look of the photochops you've made, specifically the two on this page. Also, the pics of your progress so far looks great. Can't wait to see how your final version comes out and what it looks like on your car.
ImportVenom 05-16-2007 11:25 PM

I'm impressed with your bondo'ing of the edges. I think that's the hardest part, getting a nice smooth edge. Even harder will be to make the left and right sides match. Good luck with this, and I bet it will look great when you're done.
R6_rider 05-17-2007 12:13 AM

damn!!! lovin the pictures but crying inside becouse i want a sti spoiler and you chopped it into peaces
S1MPSONS 05-17-2007 06:18 PM

Update 5/17:
Round *I stopped counting*
I filled in the other side with more fiberglass and did some grind work with the dremel. After the fiberglass dried I did some bondo (mixed with fiberglass shards) to build up the general shape. Once that dried I went over it with 3 layers of fiberglass. Check out the pics. You can start to see the final shape of the spoiler.

silver-RS 05-19-2007 03:55 PM

i think the best is just with the regular wrx wing or wingless look
but if the holes are need to be covered then your design is the way to go

about the design...i am not sure if you guys agree...from this angle

I tend to agree. I was looking at that picture for a good 5 minutes before posting these trying to decide if it was acceptable design. I believe the corners might need a little more work. I'll have to look at it again soon and decide if I should whip out the dremel.

With regard to price, I am not a vendor and I offically have no plans at the moment to produce this spoiler. But I suppose such pricing would be contingent on manufacturing costs. God knows what that costs.
