I have about 4 to 5/32nds with at least 11 autocrosses on them and about 30K street miles. These are 225/50-15's on 15x6" wheels (H-Stock).
In my STS2 Mazda RX-7 GTUs, I ran 225/45-16's and only got about 8K miles and 8 or 9 autocrosses before they went to the same wear level, harder on the rear tires when they are always spinning :)

Just to chime in about the life of the 615's. I have about 110 runs, a day long auto-x school and about 4K street miles on mine and they are just getting to the wear bars!

[I]The Z212 is a great wet tire. I used them as Rains last year in solo Stock class, they channel water very well. TheTireShoppe.com has the RS-2's for cheap ($100 ea for 225/45/17)

I work for a wheel and tire company and I usually try 5-8 types of tires a year on my cars.
I ran the rs2's on my old 04 wrx with hks coilovers and I was not very impressed. They are good tires for the money but they overheated VERY quick and did not handle as good as the falkens. It is very easy to tell when your at or close to the limits of the tire though.
My top choices for tires right now are the Bridgestone RE-01r, RT-615, and the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup.
If you autox competitively if you run the michelins you will get bumped into the Race tire class. I ran the Sport Cups on my 06 GTI Daily and I achieved over 8k miles and when I sold them they had a decent ammount of tread left.
On my recently purchased fxt I am going to try out the new Dunlop Z1's. I have a feeling for the price range they are in and the expected performance out of them I am expecting them to give the RT-615 a run for its money.
thats just my 2 cents... If you have any more questions feel free to pm me or reply on here. I will do my best to answer it for you.

I ran both on my miata. The kooks needed the car setup for them and were several tenth's quicker for me. The 615s felt better though. Tire wear was about the same. The 615s could get away with less negative camber. This was on a 2100lb miata. My heavier STi gets the Falkens hot and greasy within one run on a warm day. I have to spray them with water between every run. I haven't run the kooks on the STi. Can't get rt615 in my size, so I will either run the kooks, toyo r1r, or the dunlop in 245\40\17 for STU this season.
;20725497']how long did they last from your experience?
A year and a half of daily driving and they were down to 3/32"... (~12k miles) Two autocrosses...
I think the fact they start with only like 7/32" of tread hurts too, means that if you run them with the wrong tire pressure or a bad alignment for awhile, they can get down really low quickly in some spot and its too late to do anything about it...
The RE-01R's I got have about 11/32" tread to start with, so I'm hoping I have more time on these despite the stickier compound.
;20722437']ah im on the same boat as the OP but im leaning towards the kooks right now cause i dont autox often and i use my car for dd.

um, a majority of people have had the opposite results.. so there may be more to this issue... maybe in your set-up/driving technique??

+1 the kooks like LOTS of -camber.
+1 falkens may "feel" better .. but hankooks are faster.
why don't you come to the National tour over in Cecial Georgia next month??
still IMHO..
based on ACTUALLY USING/TRYING EACH TIRE:
Neova>REO1-R >>> Z1 > R-S2 >> RT-615
have not tried the new R1R yet.

I just can't swing the one in cecil....I will however try my 1st Tour at the Atlanta event.
I haven't found anyone with the 245\40\17 R1R for sale yet. I hope it comes out soon, as that is the tire I really want to try next. If anybody has a hookup for the R1R, please let me know.
Cheers,
Joey

With the Hankook in 225/45/16...
Who has experience with these tires on a lapping track, like Watkins Glen, or VIR?
How are they on the track when it is WET ???
I'm assuming you're going to already have dry tires?
Running them in the dry on the track is a whole other ballgame from autox.
The kooks don't do so hot with the heat from my limited experience, and that seems to be the common consensus.
If you're looking for a street tire that holds up to track-level heat, its MX's, 010's, or the Yok's.

I have found the opposite with the Z212...I could not get them hot enough. I found that they were consistent throughout their heat range, but got better as they got warmer (like an MX), and never really "went away" even when scorching.

Actually, from what people have reported, ~10k miles seems to be the norm with some Auto-x use... Thats not exactly "a lot" of miles or usage on a set of tires.

Sorry I cannot comment on R-S2's vs 615's very well.
I've driven both but on different cars, very different actually.
I have 225/45/17 on my wrx right now. And I have been pretty disappointed with them.
I drove a rsx with a nice list of suspension with 225/45/17 R-S2's. And they felt great. Granted his car is ~500lbs lighter than mine and has coilovers vs STi struts.
However I can comment on 01-R's vs 615's. God what a different class they 01-R's are in.
615's are an ok bargain tire. But if you can afford it, I whole heartedly recommend the 01-R's.
They have more peak grip. They handle heat much much better than the 615's. Are more linear at the limit. And they wear just as well.
I was even running the 01-R's in stock 205/55/16 size, then went up to 225/45/17 615's. And would rather have the 01-R's back in stock size.

You tried the Z1s as well?
I really want to hear more about the Z1. It's ~$40 cheaper a tire than the RE01R, and if it is better to or equal to it.....
For those considering the Toyo R1R: It also apparently is coming in 245/35/17, which is an awesome size... good gearing AND a wider contact patch. Not sure if it's too little sidewall or not, or even if it would work on an 8" rim for STX people, but I would try it if I had money to burn (they are ~$200+ per tire, ouch!)

I am thinking of buying one of the two tires. Which is the best for daily, sporty, with lines, driving? Which is the best on wet and on deep water? It's for a fwd car with 4 degrees negative camber at front, 1.5 degrees negative camber at rear with racing wishbones at front (and in the future at rear). Thank you very much in advance!
| tuskenraider | 05-04-2009 11:23 AM |
The Hankooks will be the better street and rain tire by a bit. The Falken a touch better in the dry. Both can overheat and get greasy. Running -4 on Hankooks would result in very, very poor straight line braking though, they were horrible at -3 on my car. I'd move on the more current generation of tires to get a better balance. If price is the reason for consideration, I'd try the Kumho XS.

The Dunlop Z1 are better than the RT-615 and R-S2 according to my needs (including tyre life)? The RT-615 are better with big camber numbers than the R-S2 (including tyre life)? Thanks again!
