what soap do you wash your car with? part 1

danny8630 05-20-2005 12:43 PM

what soap do you wash your car with?
its all in the title. Is dish soap bad for the paint? thanks. and where can i find some airplane wax?
kage 05-20-2005 12:53 PM

Dish soap isn't bad for the paint, but it IS bad for the wax. If you want to strip your wax, go ahead and use dish soap. Otherwise, it's way to harsh for the wax, so you'll want specific auto soap. I use the Zymol stuff that smells like banana.
pdippel 05-20-2005 01:05 PM

NXT car wash.

Meguairs car wash..the pink stuff..works great and is really really thick in the bottle.
I clean my car a lot and the bottle i used last year is still around.
sonic03rex 05-20-2005 03:31 PM

turtle wax zip wax, nothing amazing either but it works... even has a picture of a blue wrx on the front of the bottle
BluprlW05 05-20-2005 09:39 PM

Quick and Easy Wash...apply and rinse almost immediately after application and it won't leave waterspots..
Unabomber 05-20-2005 09:44 PM

NXT. For some reason NXT's unique smell ownz me.
BLACK02WAGON 05-20-2005 09:45 PM

Meguiars....excellent stuff and readily available but I am tempted to try the Mr. Clean Autodry.
iwanbo 05-20-2005 10:14 PM

Meguires Deep Crystal ;)

Car looks great. I wash mine once a week, and wax it about once a month.
pmartell12 05-20-2005 10:16 PM

use zaino(great), nxt(great), meguires soft wash(does the trick), and autodry pro(waste of money)
wrxedya 05-20-2005 10:35 PM

Mr. Clean works well if your car can sit in the shade for like an hour after you are done...
however NXT has the same 'advanced polymer blah blah blah' that the mr. clean does and its a shyt load cheaper....

NXT stuff here....
Apex Rex 05-20-2005 10:45 PM

Nothing but Zaino products touch my car :D The drive down to pick up more is really nice as well.
WR^2X 05-20-2005 10:55 PM

Eh, Blue Coral or something like that. As far as I can tell, carwash soap is all the same. It's the drying and waxing/polishing that make the difference.
bomex180 05-21-2005 02:19 AM

Meguiars Gold Class
RODSCALIP5 05-21-2005 02:30 AM

NXT= Nice and Shiny.
JnJassociates 05-21-2005 08:26 AM

Please do not use dishwashing soap, unless you are getting ready to prep the car for paint or to remove heavy layers of wax.

Use a car wash soap like Shining Monkey Car Soap (the only brand in the world with a pic of a WRX on the label!) or equivalent.

I would then use a good polish and you asked about 'airplane wax'... We would recommend RejeX...

Lye. Bleaches the bugs out. Burns your hands though! Also helps you dispose of the bodies in the trunk.

I used it and wasn't too impressed with it. Some people claimed the soap left a thin film on their car, even after it was washed off. My take on it is that it's good for the occasional "quick wash" but is nowhere near a substitue for a proper wash and wax.
SUBIEWRX03 05-23-2005 06:10 PM

Meguillers Gold Class. Amazing then I dry it using the Eagle One Wax as you Dry or the Meguillers detailers bottle both very effective. It is also very good to use a polymer towel to dry the car because the do not leave any type of swirls. Owning a black subie is very high maintenance.
veightkiller 05-23-2005 06:20 PM

dishwashing soap work's for me and it smells good..
AndyH 05-23-2005 07:43 PM

All you guys washing your Subie with dishwashing soap may want to read this...
"What is the best product to use as a car wash? The correct answer is use what you like the best. There are some drawbacks to certain products and advantages to others. Dish detergents (Ivory Liquid, etc.) may be used, but realize that these products are designed to remove animal or vegetable fat from fired ceramic. They look at your nice coat of wax with the same hungry eyes. If you enjoy washing and rewaxing weekly, then dish detergent is for you. Wax retailers love people who use Ivory Liquid (they send the Ivory Company Christmas Cards every year).

If you prefer to have your wax last a lot longer, you may consider using a product that is specifically designed for automotive use. The quality products are based upon detergents instead of soaps. Most soaps are manufactured from rendered animal byproducts (the stuff the dog food people reject). They contain trace elements that can actually damage your paint. These trace elements are the same goodies that leave a ring in your bathtub. The exception is soaps manufactured from plant fats. (These leave mold in your tub - just Kidding)

Quality car washes/shampoos (same thing - most cars don't have hair) are usually pH controlled, contain gloss enhancers and some even have small amounts of water-soluble wax for good measure. Use only enough car wash to break the electrostatic/ionic bond between the dirt and your car."
I like Mother's California Gold which has a very pleasant scent, better than model cement. Hey it rhymes
Dino_Martini 05-24-2005 12:07 AM

Doest he MR CLean Car wash stuff actually work? is it ok?
ChrisL2 05-24-2005 01:20 AM

I don't use car wash crap.

Bucket of water and micro fiber cloth is all I use. Well if there is layered dirt, I use a pressure hose to break that stuff off.
markadopolus 05-24-2005 02:10 AM

anything Meguiars

Car wash crap eh? I am sure you like looking at all those swirl marks huh?

The purpose of car wash, aside from all the nifty features like way and stuff, is to provide lubricant so that the dirt you are removing has less of a chance to scratch the paint surface.
shemoves 05-24-2005 03:37 AM

I use meguires gold class. So far its worked well at making here shiny. It is a bit weak at breaking up road grime though. I stay away from dish detergent as those are designed to break up oils/grease...imagine what that would do to an oil based paint. I'll admit that I am unsure what car paint's base is though.
kidatari 05-24-2005 03:43 AM

Meguires NXT is the best I've used. A close second to that is Meguires Gold Class.

Good stuff :D

EEEK! im wary about using that on my dirtbike! Great stuff tho...

Rich
WR^2X 05-24-2005 03:26 PM

If Simple Green makes a soap that's specifically designed for that type of thing, then I'm sure it's okay... But I would not use the stuff I use for cleaning my engine bay to clean my car.
nightrider2004 05-24-2005 03:35 PM

Mr. Clean :D
Hamzor 05-24-2005 05:12 PM

I would have to say that for the money and being available locally, NXT is a great car wash. I think zaino ( Z7) car wash is better, but only if your car has the zaino sealant on it because z7 is a powerful car wash and will strip any other wax except zaino.

NXT, and I have the NXT wax booster spray
dElKwOn 05-25-2005 10:18 PM

i tired a bunch , but kinda lean towards vee-wash soap , don't rember what brand it is . but it has ayclric polymers in it . drys with no spots or streaks .
ShiroChanWRX 06-20-2005 01:05 PM

I think that the NXT car wash soap is great. Smells nice, strong enough to get most gunk off, but leaves the wax/sealant behind.

I've heard that the Eagle One red car wash is excellent too. Both are widely available (eg WalMart).

I do use Dawn, but only when I'm about to polish/seal/wax from scratch. It removes too much of the hard work that I've done protecting the paint to use regularly.
GottaREX 06-20-2005 01:10 PM

MR. Clean AutoDry soap and call it a day. No drying whatsoever  .
