Bahrain GP thread part 2

rupertberr 04-03-2005 06:32 PM
Villenueve suspesion failed right as he was catching Rubens. Also, both of his sidepods were caked in brake dust so his car could not be on top form. If they fire him Im cool with that but it should be his fault, not the cars.
kp
I am a fan of Villeneuve's, even have a photo of him hanging on my wall but he has done less then nothing since he came back at the end of last year. There are plenty of young guys that deserve his spot. Didn't realize he DNFed at the end there so I would wait till Imola before I fired him. :)

Being the hard ass that I am I would also be asking for about 9 million back from Ralf and give half to Jarno, I'd keep the other half. Ralf did OK today but he is supposed to be the team leader and he has been owned so far this season. Still plenty of races to go but someone needs to light a fire under him.

A exciting race and now I have to wait 3 weeks for some more. I think Ferrari can still pull it together and make it happen.

Bridgestone must do something I think that is the weak link.
finnRex 04-03-2005 09:06 PM

Man, I know that Ferrari is going to pull out of this(they always seem to). But, I wonder if Michael is ticked off at the fact that McLaren's test driver(Pedro) has more points than he does;)

Like I said, Ferrari will turn this around. Mno is right, Bridgestone is definitely a weak link. So is the F2005 trans.

I'm surprised Renault seems to be doing well. I know they were confident coming into the season (wanting it all) but at the moment they seem to be backing it up. Hopefully the other teams will get it together and keep the series exciting throughout the season.

I'm tied for 13th with 108 points in the Pick6 competition.
BAR is getting what they had coming to them. David Richards built that team and made it the Ferrari competitor it was. Then they fire him, and they cant seem to finish a race!

I hope Honda sees the err of their ways in forcing BAR to remove Richards.
Word. I'm super anti-Honda now.

Watching Renault/Alonso win is even more boring than Ferrari/MS. At least they don't even bother showing him much.

Those old Toyota Japanese guys jumping up and down waving their hands to celebrate is a weird sight

So next race is the one that CBS will mess with?
Clegg 04-03-2005 11:55 PM

There was some good racing on other parts of the track.

I found it very interesting the RPM peaks people were hitting, you saw the Minardi's and Jordans peaking at 17k, where Alonso was nailing and passing 19K at the begining of the race, then by the end was barely hitting 18K. Renault obviously doesnt have many concerns over their engines, you can be damn sure BAR is restricting their motors quite a bit also.

So as someone said earlier, Toyota is this years Honda - my addition is: and Honda is last years Jaguar.
artkevin 04-04-2005 12:10 AM

MS's look after Alonso stole pole from him on Q2 was absolutely priceless. He looked like he was going to fire everybody that he saw for the next 20 minutes.
This year is great becuase there are so many truly (Trulli) strong teams at the front. Renualt has everyone beat, or at least Alonso does, but aside from that it seems there is so much ture pace. Webber and de la Rosa fighting it out was a really good battle that everone could tell Webber was going to lose. The Yotas are fast for sure (can't believe I'm saying that).
The aero rules are bunk though. I really feel that the FIA likes to fix things that aren't broken. The cars are just as fast as they were last year but twice as twitchy. It adds nothing to the show and actually seems to make them more, not less, dangerous.

Thanks! Although for the first few races it is largely luck. But we'll see how it goes for the rest of the season. :)

What I want to see is a 3 way battle between Fisi, Alonso, and Schumi for first. THAT would be turbo-sweet!

So, I wonder if Pedro conserved the engine for Juan? I'm doubting he did. It has to feel weird to jump into a car with a used engine.
The TV crew did a great job of following the action. I think all the teams are pushing so much more at this point in the season and thus the huge attrition. So far this year, I believe McLaren and Toyota have been the most reliable. Now if only McLaren can figure out how to qualify well.
TimStevens 04-04-2005 11:33 AM

Is there any word on when Juan will be back? One of the guys on the broadcast said something about him being out for a few months.
REXLR8 04-04-2005 11:50 AM

a good race, those renault's looked fantastic and are deffinitly the dominant car IMO, mclaren also looked nice with de la rosa riding webbers ASS for liek 7 laps and kimi finishing 3rd, im also happy for toyota with the 2nd and 4th place finish. my boys in red need a new car and new tires though, lol, there getting spanked now, they need to unveil there new car NOW. cant wait to see em in indy
artkevin 04-04-2005 11:52 AM

I can't find anything about JPM. The last I offically saw is that he should be back after 5 weeks off, in time for San Marino. There are so many rumors flying around about him right now its hard to tell whats fact and whats not. Good thing is he'll be able to see his son born for sure.
kp
Dussander 04-04-2005 11:59 AM

I heard it was a motorcycle spill. I also heard it was from driving the car in Malaysia (the vibrations). At this point, I don't care, I just want him back in the car. I also heard their child isn't due for a couple more weeks, so he may still miss the delivery if he goes to Imola.

Anyone notice the very fast off track excursions some drivers had this weekend? At most other tracks, many of them would have been into walls. Luckily, Sakhir had HUGE run off.

 The real reason he couldn't "sit" through an entire race!
artkevin 04-04-2005 02:49 PM

Sounds like JPM is hiding from Ron Dennis like a kid playing hooky from school.
BriDrive 04-04-2005 03:09 PM

I enjoyed Reubens' response when being asked to comment... "...hey Gorda, stop playing tennis...you're no good at it!"...

The look on his face seems to translate as..."...hey Gorda, that's the best you could do?..."

I imagine the true cause of his injury is too embarassing to proclaim. Perhaps he flipped an Easykart during shakedown....

Bahrain...my thoughts are thus: Schumacher's look after Alonso final Qualify...Absolutely Priceless! Don't sweat it Michael, you would have broke anyway.....Ferrari should have left the 2005's at home...Bridgestone, you'd better wake up REAL FAST...I like Pedro now...that was refreshing...Webber's slide was hard to watch, I was really pulling for him for 3rd...the difference between Ralph and Jarno probably really was down to nothing more than grid position...I've always liked Alonso...I'm really beginning to despise Flavio...He's just such a putz with his smack and sudden self aggrandizing...note to you Flav: enjoy it while it lasts...I wish I could personally interview you at year end...OUT

artkevin 04-04-2005 03:33 PM

Pedro really surprised me. He showed me absolutely nothing while he was at Jag. I know he was driving a tank but it always seemed that the jack ass Irvine handed his butt to him on a regular basis. Irvine was fast but Pedro barely seemed to be on the map. Other then out braking himself on 2 occasions he showed really well in Bahrain. The race he had with Webber was very well fought and he picked his spot to overtake. Good on ya.
gtguy 04-04-2005 05:14 PM

I'm sticking with my original assessment that this season isn't really any more interesting than any other. The color of the car having an iron grip on the race has changed, but other than that...

Even the second drivers are performing pretty much the same...intermittently, that is. Just swap Fisichella for Barrichello.

I hate, hate, HATE that tire rule.

(whew...that felt better)

Great drive from Alonso. Ferrari is crazy if they think Schumacher could have gotten Alonso, the way Schumacher's Bridgestones looked after he came off the track. And "debris," my bum!

They're in serious trouble. As we saw with McLaren and the MP-19, it takes a season to get a car back once it's off the cork. I'm not so sure that rubber is the only issue with the F2005. Ferrari will come back to win some races, but I just don't see anyone displacing Alonso/Renault, though I would like to give Briatore a swift kick somewhere painful.

De La Rosa did indeed turn in an excellent drive, as did Raikkonen, coming from 10th to podium. Trulli is resurgent, and R. Schumacher is being shown for what he is...close but no cigar.

The question is, can anyone come up to Renault's level? Certainly, there are teams that are closer to Renault than the other teams have been to Ferrari the past few seasons, but they have a great driver, a car that seems to be SO easy on the tires, plenty of balance, speed, power and rock-solid reliability. Seems like an awesome package. Too bad it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Should we start the Villeneuve clock? Looks like Mike Gascoyne's "just you wait..." comments were true, and how 'bout that Red Bull? There is some cool stuff going on, but I just don't know that the racing is any better, which is unfortunate.

Kevin
artkevin 04-04-2005 05:23 PM

I agree Kevin,
The racing is not "better". I think if the rules were not monkied around with the racing would be spectactular but the cars seem so damned twitchy. They said during broadcast that if the car is more then 3 degrees off dead straight the aero goes to crap. All of the races have had decent scraps but overall, the winner pulls away and its pretty much over by the 1st pit stop.

Regarding the back of the grid, no one has mentioned Jordan yet, if they're getting the same engine as toyota, what is Jordan doing wrong??
Bonzo 04-04-2005 05:41 PM

I heard Chili boy had a bit of an off while riding his mx bike.

I would bet his contract has certain restrictions about his off track activities. I would hide from the boss too :o :p
Regarding the back of the grid, no one has mentioned Jordan yet, if they're getting the same engine as toyota, what is Jordan doing wrong??
Crappy aero package, poorer drivers, Bridgestone tires, take your pick.

The racing is frustrating, because they're coming in for fuel anyhow, so why not let them have tires? It would be one thing if the FIA banned pit stops altogether. But to make the cars stay out on one set of rubber means that at some point, somebody is running around on hinky tires. It doesn't reduce costs, nor does it make racing safer.

But this has all been said before. I just get so hot under the collar when I think about what they've done to the sport. Less aero, so the cars get upset when following too closely, one set of tires, so that late in the race, not only do you have less aero grip when following someone, but you also have less ultimate grip. Nice work.

And to make matters sillier, the FIA won't just go to a spec tyre. If they're serious about reducing the cost of the sport, that's the first and only thing they needed to do, since the bulk of the testing is tire testing. All the other long-life engines, aero reductions, nonsensical nine-team testing bans, etc, is just wanking.

Oh, and notice how nobody (press and other teams) is picking on Ferrari now that they aren't winning races?

Kevin
Dussander 04-04-2005 06:22 PM

Lots of aero hurts for passing as well. So less aero is basically a wash. They have nearly the same downforce as last year anyway. The cars have just about as much grip from tires as last year as well. The tires are still plenty grippy at the end of the race. Lots of fastest times come around 3/4 into the race.
For me, F1 is about competition, and tire manufacturing competition is important and useful. I have zero desire for a spec tire.
This year is very interesting to me because of the many driver changes and a lot of team performance changes. (toyota up, bar down, red bull surprise, ferrari with mechanical problems, etc) This year just started out so much more random then the past couple of years.
finnRex 04-04-2005 07:38 PM

Hate to break the news to ya, but that WAS the F2005. You are right about the tires though, as Bridgestone needs to get their act together quick. Not to worry though, Ferrari will have their stuff together quicker than most would expect.
