The ride5000 $5 DIY Boxer Rumble exhaust mod

Howdy everyone!
I was hit to this mod by member ride5000. It's cheap and easy. I thought it would be fun to put together a quick how-to for this mod, as there have numerous threads over the last month or so on axle-back straight pipes and so on.
The ride5000 $5 DIY Boxer Rumble exhaust mod is the creation of an exhaust leak to get more 'boxer' sound out of the exhaust without replacing or removing any of the main components of the exhaust system. The gasket between the mid-pipe and the axle-back assembly will be removed, and the nuts and bolts used to hold the mid-pipe and the axle-back together will be replaced. This mod is geared towards the person who would like to get more sound out of their mostly stock exhaust setup, but who does not have the $$ to purchase an axle-back or cat-back setup.
Advantages:

Easy to do
Inexpensive
Retains stock look so the po-po shouldn't pull you over on looks alone
Completely and easily reversible if you do get hassled by the man
Unleashes raw boxer sound
Emits burbles and pops liek a real race car! (sort of)
Sort of loud
Psychological effect of making you feel the car is faster or cooler
Disadvantages:

Sort of loud
No power gains
Wife does not like it because it reminds her of her Mom's unreliable and loud car that broke down all the time when she was a kid.
First, remove the two bolts and nuts that hold the mid-pipe and axle-back together. Separate the two pipes carefully in hopes of keeping the gasket between them in one piece. Set the gasket aside for possible use again someday. Next, take the bolts to a hardware store. Look for bolts that are roughly the same size, but longer. When you have the bolts, pick up 10-12 flat washers, 2 split lock washers, and 2 nuts. I chose all stainless steel hardware, and the nuts and bolts I got are 14mm just like the OEM nuts and bolts.
But wait, you said remove the bolts, and then go to the hardware store?!? But what about the loose axle-back assembly? A-ha. Here's what I did - I removed the axle-back assembly from the car for the trip to the hardware store. This will give you an idea of the volume you'll have to contend with after you complete the mod (although the total removal of the axle-back is a little louder than with the ride5000 mod in place, IMO).
When you get back home, back your car up on a set of ramps, and re-hang your axle-back. Bolt the mid-pipe and the axle-back together with your new hardware, but in place of the gasket, install a few washers. I started with 4 washers per bolt between the two pipes, but now I am running 3 per bolt. The 3 bolts is possibly maybe approximately 1/2 a decibel quieter than the 4, but then again, maybe it isn't. When I first did the mod, I used 4 washers in between, but then read that ride5000 used 3, so that is why I'm running 3.
Driving Impressions and Such-
I first did this mod in early December. I reversed the mod later in the month for a trip to the dealership for some routine maintenance. It has been too cold here since then, and not conducive to laying around on the garage floor. But yesterday was warmer, so I again performed the mod. Today I drove to the store with all the windows down. Because of the location of the mod underneath the car, one has an impression that they have a side exhaust outlet. Upon hard acceleration, it almost seems as though the sound gets a little quieter as one approaches redline. With the windows down, the wind noise overpowers the exhaust sound by the time you hit 3rd gear.
PICS!!

Not much to it. Again, it is completely and easily reversible. If you don't have the cash for the real deal, try this. If the po-lice give you a hard time, just say, "Yes officer, I have an exhaust leak. I've been meaning to get that taken care of." But if you think about it, this mod does not make you car any louder than that rust bucket Pontiac 6000 POS that you see around town that has been without a cat-back for 6 years!
Enjoy!

Holy run-on sentence Batman! Not everyone on this board can afford to buy whatever parts they want for their car. Being married, a home owner, and in the middle of adopting a child, cha-ching is a little tight. Besides, maybe I'm in the situation where I can just barely afford the car. You don't know me, Dawg! Or maybe I'd rather save my money and spend it on items that will really make a difference, like suspension and/or brake items. Besides, someone has to stand up for the little guy out there who has been driving a stock car and wants to do something to it, but is having trouble coming up with the donuts.
Ghetto as all hell? You betcha! I'm not coming at you JustinWRC. Just realize that there are different strokes for different folks. I'd love to have an 80 gazillion dollar JDM HID headlight setup, but I can't afford it, so I did the DIY mod. I'd love to have real STi mesh foglight covers, but I got the knock-offs because that's all I could afford after replacing the 2nd smashed foglight assembly. Maybe I couldn't afford lowering springs -- oh wait, I did get those. Anyway, I try to watch the $$ I allocate to the car. Sure, If I campaign hard for car parts, I could probably get them. But with this adoption thing going on, and not knowing when exactly we're going to have to shell out another multi-thousand dollar payment, I'm trying to watch my Ps and Qs and have fun with the car at the same time. Tell me that cheap + easy does not + fun.

As serious as a heart attack.
WRXSIG - Looks nice, and it looks like you got a good price. Buttsecks? Just kidding! I looked into an axle-back straight pipe. I got 3 estimates: Two at custom exhaust shops, and one at Meineke (?). The lowest price I got for a custom axle-back straight pipe was $100. Welcome to WI.
Again, this wasn't my idea. I'm just bringing the idea to the people.

Not everyone likes to have an angled fart can sticking out of their car. Big ups for keeping the twin tips! Such an elitist attitude around here.
| Rallycarperson | 01-15-2006 08:59 PM |
This is freakin hilarious. Not only is this pointless, but it will probably give no and probably less HP, because you are disrupting the exhaust flow. You have a $24k car and you can't even afford an axleback?

The gap is small enough that I still get plenty of flow through the muffler and out the tailpipes. And not pointless. The car sounds different; louder, amybe sportier. Therefor is 'feels' sportier. It's a psyche mod, meaning it has a psychological effect on the own3r/driver. No HP gain, but no HP loss, either.
I love how everyone equates the fact that the WRX new was around $24K, and therefor anyone who owns one should be able to afford whatever mods they want. Not everyone has a sweet gig and pulls down lots of cash. Likewise, not every lives responsibly within their financial means. Maybe finding a used WRX that one could barely afford fulfilled a dream that started in 1998 when the first Gran Turismo game came out for PSOne. Maybe I'm mildly retarded and this is a big deal mod for me. Maybe I live int he car, and I just park it in my sister's driveway for pics. Maybe it's not my car, but I pretend it is because I'm a little off-camber ever since I dropped a big rock on my head when I was in 4th grade. Maybe I'm making all of this up and I certainly could afford an axle- or cat-back, but I'd rather prove a point by pushing ghetto mods...

Regarding the junction in question being directly below the fuel tank, I would not have attempted this mod if I didn't do lots of research via the search function and sent numerous PMs to people who have been running without an axle-back for months upon months. One guy had been running without an axle-back for at least a year, and he's not all blowed up yet. Yet.

Well, it Doesn't sound like the exhaust leaks I had due to rusted-through pipes on my past Accord and Civic, either.
I referred the the mod as a 'leak' because that is what it really is. If you use 1 or 2 wahsers, it has been reported that you will get the pfffff exhaust leak sound that sound like lame. Using 3-4 washer per bolt, you are getting more raw boxer sound than anything. Similar to running without an axle-back.
And sprty is just a frame of mind. Fine, it doesn't sound sporty. It sounds boxer rumbly loud, and I like it for now. In 5 minutes, I can undo it. Five minutes later, I can do it up again. No big deal.

Dude, I'm sorry you think it's pointless, kinda like me discussing this with a 15 y/o. Dude, you can't even legally drive yet. Dude, you're not a home owner or married yet. Dude, you don't even know what 'getting the most bang-for-you-buck' really means. Dude, you don't know what it's like to quit your decent job when you are 30 years old and take a $12K hit in pay to go work for an up-and-coming company that you believe in. But I'm sure you can afford a $100 axle-back. Go ahead, get your $100 axle-back for (insert poster dream car here).
And it is a controlled exhaust leak. A controlled leak that I created, and I can taketh away! I can play God with this exhasut leak! I have absolute control over whether it lives or dies, therefor I shall call it... A modification!

There is supposedly a purpose to those crooked muffler though, one less bend in the exhaust system. I doubt it does much, but it is there for that reason.

I always figured the reason for the bend was rice boys that bought generic muffs that just didn't line up properly. Though your theory does make sense in theory.

IMHO this is a very bad idea. Exhaust gases are bad for you, and even with such a small gap, some of those gases will end up inside your car. I don't have a problem with people modding their cars, even if its the cheaper way. Be smart, hook up your exhaust the right way, save up the money and do the exhaust properly. If you look around I am sure that you can find someone that is willing to trade an axelback exhaust for cheap and you can put it on yourself. I think thats the better way to go.

check ebay, check the classifieds of the forum. you can get an axleback for cheap, probably the same price as all those washers you bought. I understand it makes you feel good because your exhaust is sporty. but that light-headed feeling your going to get when the carbon monoxide gets into your car wont feel so good. Save up some change from everyday and in a couple of months you could probably buy a real exhaust. its not hard.

Wisconsin doesn't have emissions testing...
Hey, if you want a slightly louder exhaust, I've got a free mod for you:
Remove the intake piping from the fender (pre-airbox), it'll give you a deeper exhaust note at 3/4 to full throttle.
But please don't do this, this is a very bad idea. Nobody is pointing this out for absolutely no reason, there is a very grounded reason why you shouldn't do this.

Wow, what a cool suggestion. Will this work on my car? (jk)
To be serious, it is a BAD idea to intentionally introduce an undercar exhaust leak...
The best case scenario has this setup spewing hot carbon on your underbody, and sounding like a bad exhaust leak (not sounding like a racecar)...
More likely, you will be experiencing a bit of lightheadedness on long drives.
Good luck with this "mod"... If you want my opinion, take a couple of dollars and go get yourself a new gasket.

Go to a mufflershop and get an axle-back straight pipe for $50. It looks more factory than the factory exhaust does...ugly steel pipe = more factory than nice chrome tip. I agree that this is way cheaper, but you run into the problem that if you idle for too long you could get carbon monoxide poisoning although i think it would probably take like an hour idling with the windows up and a/c off. Its a good cheap mod, and a safe way to see what this boxer rumble that every one raves about sounds like.

hehe, the first time I hooked up my prodrive catback, i had an exhaust leak. I thought it sounded horrible, smelt funny, etc. Apparently, since I hadn't tightened on of the bolts properly, one had fallen out. I got two brand new bolts from a Subaru dealer ($3 dollars) and fixed it, and it sounded 100% better.
To each his own, but in my personal opinion, a leaky exhaust doesn't sound too great (and can smell funny..).
On a positive note, I thought the pictures you took were pretty good (sans the last two) and your description on how to do the "mod" was pretty good.

You know, if you take out the rear seat, it makes your car sound like a racecar... There is more road noise, the exhaust sounds louder and you can hear the turbo better. It also makes your car LOOK more like a race car too. (because race cars hardly ever have back seats)

honda? are you high? it's simply an n1 ideal. the fewer bends, the better. take it for what you will, but it's nowhere near as common on hondas as it is on wrx's, let alone other non-honda cars. i love how common the idiotic honda-hate is here. every time something stupid shows up on the monitor an nasioc.com member blames honda.
please...please stop the stupidity. it's this kind of irrational crap that makes it soooo easy for EVERY other owners' group to make fun of you guys. i assume i'll soon see "i don't care, they drive stupid cars" pretty soon.

do you understand airflow at all? if the car is moving, the exhaust is moving. also, with 3 cats in place you can saddle up to your exhaust and sit there gasping as hard as you can, and not really get messed up. also, he has all 3 cats in place.

once again, 3 cats... no problems. you act like 2.5 feet of restrictive hose makes any difference at all.

this is all from the same site that gave us the square-tubing-gate-hinge harness bar.
this is a silly mod, but far from harmful. i'd never do it, and i would make ENDLESS fun of any friends of mine who did it until they put it back to stock or came up with a real exhaust, but that won't help here.
once again, this won't hurt anyone. there's a heat shield above that section and he's going to have a ton of soot on the undercarriage, but it's not going to do any harm. god... sometimes you people get sidetracked on the silliest things.

no, it really wouldn't. a muffler has no effect on the smell of your exhaust.
cats: react with passing exhaust gasses to pull the crap out of it that would normally pollute and stink.
muffler: keeps things quiet. has no effect on smell unless the muffler is on fire.

have you ever actually looked at an emissions test report?
have you ever run catless?
do me a favor and figure out how much CO comes out of your tailpipe and then look at how much it actually takes to kill or mame a child. i think you'd be surprised to find out just how little comes out of the end of an LEV status vehicle, let alone ULEV status automobiles from other manuf's such as honda.
please research a bit before you make a dumb comment. the fact remains that it is now more likely that idling in the garage will cook you before you die of anything like CO poisening.

Tell you what, you go let your car idle in the garage and let me know what happens, ok? Actually, I'll look for the news report letting me know Darwin took home another one. You freaking retard. There is plenty of CO, more than enough to kill someone. I can't count the number of CO alarm calls I've been on where pulling the car into the garage and letting it run for a minute or so has been enough to trip a meter on the other side of the house. Tripping the meter means there was enough CO that it exceeded the LEL (lower exposure limit). I'd love to know where you're getting this fact from, because you're sorely misguided. If the exhaust is getting routed into the car at all, even a little bit it will have an effect. Why? Because CO effects are cumulative, it'll build in your system. Do you actually know how much CO is produced by a LEV or a ULEV, or what the exposure levels are? There are very solid reasons why this "mod" is a bad one.
