Install of aftermarket seats part 1

WRXBlue02 01-16-2005 11:58 PM

Install of aftermarket seats
well I'm gonna install some Corbeau seats that I picked up now I'm not an idiot i know how to bolt them down and all but my question is that I have an 02 WRX and i have side air bags in my seats now. So if I disconnect the wire to the seats I would have my air bag light on, Correct? If so how do I take care of the light? Is there a way to wire it or so on? Any help is great

Disconnect the negative side of the battery.
Remove seats and disconnect airbags.
Stick a 3.0 Ohm resistor into the harness side airbag connector and tape it up with electrical tape.
Install new seats.
Be happy. :D

wow that sounds so hard, Thanks for the help :)
cnk 01-17-2005 12:08 AM

The hardest part is getting the old seats out and the new seats in without scratching up any part of the interior. ;)

yeah, my friend installed a seat in his STi and got his steering wheel and arm rest. Got any good tips on how to do it or is just taking my time the key?
cnk 01-17-2005 12:36 AM

I have a quick-release on my steering wheel so that wasn't an issue. I found that putting in the upper portion and then twisting the lower portion into place made it easier. You'll see what I mean when you try to remove the stock seats. I would also roll down the windows just to give you a little more room.

roll down windows, open all doors, and if it would make you feel more comfortable, take out the rear seats (a much easier operation) to free up even more room and get them out of the way. that way you can use the whole cabin to manuver.

***disclaimer, i haven't actually done this but when i was transporting my front bumper i got well aquainted with positioning large items in and out of the cabin. that said, good luck!***

I wouldn't open the rear doors. . more of a chance you'll hit them when maneuvering the seats out the front door. No need to take out the rear seats either. Just take your time and work slowly. Take the headrest off the stock seats and recline them fully forward as well.

I think you have to wait about 15 min after you disconnect the battery to allow the capacitors in the airbags to fully discharge. At least you have to do it for BMWs and a few other makes.. don't know why you wouldn't have to for Subarus.

i will be sure to let it sit a bit before i hook anything up. So I just hope i dont damage anything i was thinking about covering the armrest and shifting area with maybe a blanket to prevent any scratches. But I will have to examine the situation when i start to take the seat out

Not necessary. Just step on the brake pedal to discharge any residual current. You will know when there is no more power when your odometer goes out.

Well I went to the local parts store and asked for a 3.0 Ohm resistor. They seemed kinda confused and they showed me which ones they could get and nothing looked like it would plug into the harness. So now I'm a little confused on what to do.
cnk 01-17-2005 02:53 PM

It's not a plug that goes into the harness. Do you know what a resistor looks like? It's just a small pea sized ceramic part with lines on it and a single wire end coming off each side. You bend the wires and stick it into the harness and wrap it with electrical tape to secure it.

I was expecting the resistor to look differently then it did. The picture helps. So I just bend the ends of the and stick them in the harness and then wrap it up? God I feel like such an idiot :(
cnk 01-17-2005 03:05 PM

Yes. . .I usually trim the wire ends down a little so that there's no chance of the wires touching each other by accident.

Damn you respond fast my post. Awesome. Well I thank you for your help on this. Now I hope I can just get the seat out with out destroying my car
cnk 01-17-2005 03:20 PM

Good luck. . .and chances are, you won't be able to find the resistors at any stores you go to unless they are a specialty electronics store. Radio Shack doesn't carry them so I would recommend picking them up from the site I just linked above.

Its kinda funny you said that I found this about 5 minutes ago.

think of radioshack and best buy combined and you get fry's. i'm not sure if they are nationwide, but they're all over cali?

hmmm well i live in Vermont so we are a bit behind in everything

Is the 3 ohm resistor a "for sure" way of getting the airbag light to turn off? I tried the 3 10 ohm resistors in parallel over the weekend and it didn't work for me.
cnk 01-31-2005 10:15 AM

Yes. I used them for my steering wheel and seat airbags.
