Moonroof on 2002/3 part 1

WReX'n'Effect 04-29-2003 01:32 AM

Moonroof on 2002/3
So now that this is a factory option does that mean we can all drive to our local subaru dealers and have em install it for $1500 or less cause that's what the package costs on the subaru website. It should be less but I don't know what the "weather package" is and if it is a part of the moonroof. Just curious. Later.
thisisbrock 04-29-2003 01:44 AM

i second that question..id love a moonroof in my rex
2.5RSMatt 04-29-2003 04:18 AM

I have a wonderful sunroof or is it moonroof . .which is which . .I know that one is glass and another is body color but I never know. Had a guy ask me the other day how I got a sunroof on my wrx:(
Diversion 04-29-2003 06:35 AM

I doubt Subaru will install moonroofs in WRXs for the mere fact that a no-moonroof WRX has a pretty beefy roll bar in that area and the pre-installed moonroofed WRXs never had that bar there to begin with. I would love a factory moonroof, but to keep me from being so jealous, I just say to myself "My WRX is lighter than one with a moonroof" .. ;)

It's been proven that there is no role bar there. Do a search and you'll find a post with pics of a sunroof install that clearly shows no bar there.

This was over sight on Subaru's part thinking people wanted a "rally" car and didn't care about sunroofs. Nothing has changed in the '04 model, basicly cut out the roof and installed (yes I know there's more then that too it).
paultg 04-29-2003 08:07 AM

The "premium package" here in New England includes a sun roof (with glass), heated cloth seats, heated mirrors and a windshield for $1500 - I think.

This package is not available for the wagon. This is what my friend had done on his 04 last week:

I bought my 2002 with a moon roof installed. Maybe someday I'll get around to posting some pics of it. I love it.

You are wrong. I have had the headliner out of my car twice. I can verify that there is a large, thick heavy piece of metal that connects the B pillers. Look at your headliner, it bulges out around it.
There are also some thin bars up there just to support the thin sheet metal of the roof. Those can come out without hurting the integrity of the car.

You could put in a very thin sunroof if it opens outside the car.

The people who had sunroofs put in had the metal cut out of the way. A sunroof is more important than rollover protection to them, and that is fine. Zeibart offered to put a sunroof in my car. When I told the salesman about the large support bar, he told me they could cut it out of the way, they do it all the time.

I'm done ranting.

No I'm not! :p

Have you looked in an '04 it IS a very thin sunroof because that bar is still there.

All the pics of custom roof's I've seen are very thin and they left that bar, so yes the sunroof comes up and over the car, allot of sunroofs are like that.
silverF4turbo 04-30-2003 02:38 PM

I don't think dealers will be able to handle this type of work. If you can order all the OEM equiptment necessary to do it, I'd imagine they'd subcontract it out to a body shop. Thats what they did on my car.

Also the 04 moonroofs are tiny! Aftermarket is so much nicer even if you do lose the crossbar in the process. My car feels exactly the same in hard cornering before and afterwards
Rebellion 04-30-2003 03:07 PM

not to mention the moonroof was a factory option on the 01/02 JDM WRX (our 02/03 model)... it has little to do w/ the bracing.

How can you say that your not wrong? you just posted that there is NO ROLL BAR when in fact there is, so that would make you not right or ?????? WRONG;)
Brad Pittiful 04-30-2003 04:13 PM

dont you think if there was a way to put a sun/moon roof on the 02/03 wrxes from the factory they would have done it...seems like everyone wants one
jimithing412 04-30-2003 04:30 PM

If there is a roll bar that prevents the installation of a sunroof, then why did every market, besides the US offer a sunroof as an option in 02-03. Subaru f***ed in not offering it here. Hence the reason they're offering it now, but they f***ed up again by not offering it on the wagon. SOA desperately needs to hire a new marketing dept.

people would have paid the extra money for the moon/sun roof...they screwed up imo

I should have been more clear. When I said "there is no roll bar there" I ment it(bar) is not in a place to interfear with putting a sunroof in.
In the '04 that bar is still in the middle of the car, it's just a small sunroof. So no I wasn't wrong, you just didn't understand me/ I didn't explain enough.

Either way, they fixed it now...so what difference does it make? You bought an rs, and to my knowledge, there are no sunroofs in the 04 rs? At least last time I went to my local dealship they said they weren't selling my04 rs with moonroofs.
Thumper23 04-30-2003 10:47 PM

well, I bought my '02 and had the dealer install a moonroof. It was one of their options and I have never looked back.
WReX'n'Effect 05-01-2003 02:12 AM

wow quite a heated debate we got goin huh. Anyways I was just wondering and I had a moonroof in my Integra GSR (got rid of it 4 years ago) but I think I used the roof for the first few months after that I forgot it was there. Kinda like a little kid, fun to play with for a while then it gets old and you could care less if you had one haha kidding! but seriously it's not a big deal and definatley not worth compromising the structure of the car, not to mention the fact it;s pretty scary to cut a hole in your roof. Later.
szero 05-01-2003 10:44 AM

There is a bar there. I have seen it (it's not like it's a flying saucer or something) and it is beefy. Apparently cutting it out for a moonroof install is noisy as hell.

If you are in the New England area and don't mind a hike, Attention to Detail (http://www.atd1.com) does moonroofs for local Subie dealerships. I was at their shop for my leather seats and they were doing a roof for a new wagon... you hear nothing else when they're cutting up that bar.

If you give them a call, ask for James. He can explain the process to you and maybe point you in the right direction if you're talking sunroofs.
piker28 05-01-2003 10:58 AM

so are you saying its okay or not??

difference is that people wanted them in the 02/03 models...i was just stating they would have had no probelem selling them with the sun/moon roofs
szero 05-01-2003 02:36 PM

I say it's OK to have a moonroof in the 02/03. Probably will result in a miniscule amount of body flex... and I'd probably wouldn't go and autocross with it.

Then again, girls don't like autocrossers...

MadMatt017 05-01-2003 04:35 PM

Gillman Subaru says they won't be doing it on the older model WRX

Glad i got my '04:p
