Teemu Selanne (of the NHL) Runs WRC? part 1

Teemu Selanne (of the NHL) Runs WRC?
I got the latest issue of FHM, the one with all the Baywatch chicks on it. There is an article on page 180 about Teemu Selanne of the Sna Jose Sharks. He states that he runs WRC events when he can. He rents a Corolla for the races he has been running. He says he finished 24th out of 100 in his last race. He also ran a 24 hr. at Nurburgring.

There is also a huge list of cars he has. Quite an assortment too. Everything from a 49' Caddy convertible to a 03' SL55 Mercedes. Not on the list but in the article he says he has an Evo 7 too.

A good friend of mine works for a big NHL goaltender too. Some of those guys love their cars! I have seen this one's garage.

well he is from Finlandia! those scandinavians take their WRC seriously

It is not necesserily their WRC. They have ideal conditions to learn (lots of unpaved roads). In theory our roads and empty land should produce the best WRC drivers, but our great rally minds (SCCA) do not see the point in running with the rest of the world. Compare the SCCA ProRally rules with FIA and you will see that the Atlantic Ocean is a great divide. Funny that it does not work that way for South America (Rally of Argentina, FIA sanctioned Corona Rally in Mexico).
I guess my rants are totally of the subject...
rohde88 03-01-2003 01:55 PM

well maybe not WRC but overall driving/racing in general...that and soccer....isnt the SCCA trying to start more grassroots stuff?

Is it Eddie Belfour? I know he's a big gearhead.

I fail to see how switching to FIA rules will enhance domestic driving talent.

Using exclusively FIA car classifications will eliminate just about every existing rally car in the country, force competitors to import a lot of cars and parts not sold on these shores, and create enormous paperwork and homologation headaches. Take a look at the FIA's homologated vehicle list for Group A and Group N, and count how many of these cars are sold in North America. It's a pretty small number.

Running events to FIA rules means competitors have a lot of long transits and quite a bit of sitting around, which means fewer stages run per day (and hence less seat time), as well as fewer opportunities for spectators to see the cars. Recce is nice, and it would be beneficial to have more recce'd events, but having a large number of events with reconnaissance will drive costs even higher, force competitors to take a lot more time off work, and prevent smaller-budget teams from running a lot of events.

What is needed to get more North American drivers onto the international scene is a strong feeder series (ie. more & longer ClubRallies) that can allow teams to run many events on a relatively low budget. More exposure would help, too, so competitors can have more sponsorship opportunities. Ultimately, seat time is what matters, not whether events are run to FIA or SCCA rules. Supporting the organizers will help this sport grow, and make it better for all of us.

And sorry for hijacking the thread. :)

Yes it is. I think I may have mentioned it in another thread once. I ran past 2 Vipers to see his Porsche GT2. He has a 3rd Viper on the way now, a 03' I guess. Plus he has a bunch of Hemi-powered muscle cars, a 65' Belvedere making 900+ hp is one of them.

Teemu
I have not posted on here for quite a while but I had to come out for this one.

I have made equipment for Teemu, (let's just leave it at that...), and firstly I can tell you that he is an unbelieveably nice and genuine person. He is also an incredibly talented driver. I've raced shifter Karts with him, and he's FAST.....VERY FAST. I saw him outpace some good drivers in 250's (including an ex-world champion motocrosser from Europe)... but he was driving a 175 just to make it interesting. He normally drives a 250 Honda motor, which as some of you may know is a torque monster and spins easily. He's very skilled.

Rally: He has not driven in a WRC event, but has driven in many non-wrc events under another name to remain anonomous. HE LOVES RALLY, as do most Fins. He has done very well in past events, and can even do better but he is afraid of being found out.....very sensitive subject. NHL sees him as a property, and risking injury in a car is not something they like to hear, as you can imagine. He had a major accident in Finland a couple of years back while practicing, and it was all over the Euro press bigtime. It was a big ordeal for him as it was treated like a scandal.

He does have an EVO 6 that Tommi arranged for him to buy. I believe it is an actual WRC car, but not 100% sure. He is good friends with Tommi and the other FIN drivers, including Hakkinnen. He follows rally Finland every year by helicopter; he rents it for himself and friends to enjoy, stage by stage.

Other cars: He has quite a collection, from several Ferraris (I've driven his 550!), to AMG Mercs, a 700 hp Viper, several vintage American muscle cars, etc. He has a full-time guy on the payroll to maintain them.......amazing. Quite a guy.

It occurs to me that he would probably not appreciate me spouting about all this, but I am posting this because I think you should all know how passionate he is about rally in particular, and cars in general. It's also important for me personally to make sure people know how great a person he is. Of all the people I have worked with in hockey, he is the best by far.:)
Thug 03-02-2003 09:44 PM

Wow. I have a new found respect for Teemu Selanne. Even though he cant play defense. ;)
TV3WRX 03-02-2003 10:08 PM

True.
True, he's not very defensively-minded. It's important that he play on a carefully strategized line.....that's when he can score 50 a year. And also he's best on big ice, olympic-style.

But, he CAN take hits. His strength is underestimated by many.

I know this is somewhat off-topic but it's hard to resist.
Rattler 03-03-2003 12:01 AM
I hope youre not a Detroit fan...Dallas has the best team since we got rid of that drunk of a goalied, eddie
Yes I am a Detroit fan! As a matter of fact, I will be at the game Weds. Eddie is playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs now (original 6!!!). He just came off a 13 game winning streak too. Some players just have a hard time some places. Dallas is doing well too. But don't forget, the President's Trophy is called the "Kiss of death" too. The Wings have had it happen to them as well as quite a few other teams. Madano and Hatcher are from Detroit no less. There is another player on the Stars from Detroit but I can't remember off hand who it is.
rohde88 03-03-2003 12:41 AM

well, we're still at the top of the league right now. Maybe you're thinking of Marty Turco (G) who played for Michigan.

Eddie Belfour is a great guy. Very shy, very quiet, but still a great guy. He's had his problems, just like most all of us. Life isn't perfect, even for guys making millions of dollars.

It seems that Eddie has really gotten things together. I was at the Red Wings/Leafs game in Toronto back November (tickets from Belfour btw) and Ed seems to be doing great. It was right about that time that he single handidly turned this season around for the Leafs. Met his new wife for the first time. Great girl. Even got a ride back to the hotel from him. Unfortunately in a bone stock Escalade.

But yeah, he is one of the biggest muscle car fanatics you will ever see. He has some sick rides and has built plenty more for teammates. I still remember back when he got his first big contract and the first thing he bought was a 911 turbo.

From what I've known, he's never been one for the Ferrari's or Lambo's...rather he figures he can build several Mopars for the price of one exotic.

He definately knows his cars though, can't wait for summer to come around and get to catch up with him at the shop.

Rattler 03-03-2003 08:04 PM

Too bad that the shops are sooo small hey Kev?

Bob is working on a 69' Chevelle for a guy from the Blackhawk's wife. $$$ !
KKoepp31 03-03-2003 08:26 PM

yeah, those cars he builds definately are not cheap. I guess Verbeek's truck was just amazing and won a bunch of awards.

On a side note, don't be surprised to see Belfour get into drag racing more seriously once he retires. NHL contracts kinda frown upon that sort of stuff, but he's long wanted to take it to more of a professional level.
Rattler 03-03-2003 08:34 PM

Bob, my buddy that works for him, told me he almost has his whole crew together for drag racing next year. He got a bunch of the old Ramchargers crew fom Detroit. They were a powerhouse back in the day. Bob claims Eddie is done after this year.

Actually, i was pacing Merrik Svatos of the AVS the other day on I-25 here in Denver, and he drives a hooked up 06 black STI, super sexy looking with a FMIC and everything...
i wanted to speed up and say whats up to the driver and to my surprise it was him...
too bad he's injured :(
nice to see the pro's know a good car when they see one...
artkevin 03-17-2006 01:55 PM

This is a great!
A hockey/racing thread. I always thought I would have to start one but could never think of a way to tie the two.
I have seen a bunch of Eddie's cars back when I lived in Dallas and he tended. 99 Cup anyone? :)
