Top Five Gauges To Have
I ordered a 2003 Impreza WRX without the factory/port installed boost gauge. I saw a three gauge pod that was really cool in the options book and liked the look of it. The dealer said it was a dealer option. I've decided to hold off on that and look elsewhere for the set up. With a little research I've found aftermarket pods that are cheaper. I also found a white faced, blue lighted speedpo, tach, temp, fuel gauge, etc. overlay and thought it would be nice to have all the gauges match.
Now for my question, what are the top five (5) gauges to have in a WRX? Also, does anyone besides Omori make gauges that would match the Indiglo gauges?
Thanks.

As far as indiglo goes, there are alot of companies that make guages in different sizes and measurements. You'll just need to search. As far as what my setup is going to be. I have the steering boost gauge. Then a defi pod w/egt, oil pressure, and water temp. Than maybe one on the pillar for a air-fuel? It all depends on what you are going to be doing to the car.
If you are leaving it stock you don't need any. The boost is fun to watch to see how and when the car builds boost and in what situations. All the others I listed become important when you start yo modify your car.
Exhaust gas temp is vital because that can let you know if you are running close to detonation and if you are running lean.
Oil pressure will let you know of big problems in your engine before they get worse.
Water temp will let you know how well your coolant system is working and how much heat is in the system. Also I would think would be important when pussing more power. You want to know how much heat is being pulled away from the heads where it can cause detonation.
Air/fuel I'm up in the air about alot of people say they are more of a light show than anything but I'm going to be spending alot on my car so I want to know what is going on under the hood.

One thing about matching colors.....I've always thought the same thing, that they should match, but your heating, and radio still will not match color. I have decided to go with Defi BF guages because they would look cool.
As far as what guages to get....I'm gonna put EGT, Oil Pressure, and Oil Temp in the pod....and I was thinking boost on the a-pillar in a cup-mount. I had boost, oil pressure, oil temp, air/fuel, and voltmeter in my old Supercharged maxima. You think I should go with oil temp again?? I def want to do oil pressure, egt, and boost, its just whether or not I want to put more on the a-pillar or somewhere else.....There aren't that many kinds of the BF guages, so I may just get them all and mount them in various places. Any ideas as to more places to put them?? :)

instead of oil temp why not water. That can tell you alot about how healthy your engine is, Blitz has a real nice radiator hose with a bung in it too.

you think water temp is better than oil temp?? Cause that'd be an option too, especailly since there is a radiator hose with a bung already in it....Also, I think i'd run out of room with all the guages....On the oil temp argument tho, there is a water temp guage on the dash....

There's nothing wrong with water temp, but if you have a limit in the $ department, go with the oil pressure. It will tell you much more important "health" characteristics.... like be a good indicator that your getting good lubrication into the turbo. Although, its an idiot-gauge, you already have a water temp gauge in the combination meter as well as a cooling fan. Get the oil pressure gauge.
As for looks and manufacturer.... I have a couple of HKS gauges and am not happy with the lighting. Also the boost gauge seems a bit off. This surprises me as HKS is known for quality. The lighting is very dim. If an street lamp hits the boost meter at night, it looks as though the meter's lighting isn't even on
So, I'm selling them on eBay as soon as my custom Omori gauges come. I've spent a long time talking with folks from Omori. I do not know anyone to have complained about them. I got a good deal directly with Omori-NA on custom gauges that will match my reverse indiglo combination meter.... any day now :)

If you want to match indiglo, I'd go with Apexi's EL series gauges. They're nice quality indiglo gauges though they're a bit pricey also.

Just keep in mind that they're 60mm gauges.

i worry about even a easy-to-see boost gauge
i think the more gauges you have the more a cop who has pulled you over will be likely to give you some kind of a ticket just because of the race-car image your giving off
im trying to get a boost gauge that'll hide in my ashtray :p

Well I would never say water temp over oil pressure. As for what oil pressure will tell you, I think the oil cools the turbo more than lubes it and I care alot more about how much pressure is in the whole system. If something goes terribly wrong inside the engine an oil pressure gauge will let you know before maybe things go to the point of a complete loss of the engine. My setup is going to have both because I already have the boost guage from the factory. As for me running water temp I'm going with a fmic and a aftermarket radiator and will want to know how well the system is working, and the water temp light on the dash as said is an idiot light.

I have the Blitz BL-series in my car they are carbon with green numbers and use blacklites to light up the numbers. Blitz also makes other colors and they are high quality and I would recommend them to anyone.

Bump...I wanna hear some more opinions, I was told boost, egt, and possibly(sp?) FP, but don't know what to believe:confused: .
| 128d | 09-25-2002 05:45 PM |
If you get any at all you shoould really have boost anf EGT. I find them to be by far the most important if you plan on modding anything on your car.
| TonyWRX | 09-25-2002 06:21 PM |
definitely boost and EGT...then i think its just personal opinion for the 3rd...i've heard so many different ones you should get.
I have a question though...what would people suggest are the best gauges out there?
I've heard Greddy but now i'm starting to wonder if the Apex'i or the Blitz are better. There's also Autometer and Omori (sp?) Anything else?

Don't listen to any of these guys, you need 5 shift lights! Make sure they are either chrome or fake carbon fiber!

come on now, you know you only need 5 shift lights if your car is AUTOMATIC

I'm still looking for some opinions on the "best" five gauges to have.
| mr2guru | 09-26-2002 06:28 PM |
Here what I think....for a modded car at least.
1. Boost
2. EGT
3. Oil pressure
4. Fuel pressure
5. toss-up...AFR/oil temp

2. EGT

None of you guys constrasted Oil temp vs Water temp.....I'd like to hear all your thoughts on that.....
| decibel_dj | 09-27-2002 09:37 AM |
personally i would get:
1- EGT (being most important)
2-Boost (2nd after EGT)
3-Oil Pressure
after that everything else is a toss up!
A/F meters arent really showing much and in most cases arent needed unless you have a dual guage which shows Air and Fuel on 2 separate needles (custom guage)
1- EGT (being most important)
2-Boost (2nd after EGT)
3-Oil Pressure

That's an understatement. They are way super freakin' overpriced! And they aren't reverse indiglo. Also 60mm A'pexi gauges are begging to be stolen

Ugh.
To start out repeating somewhat of what's been said...
Which gauges are the "best" depends on what you are doing. If you are not playing with fuel pressure or mixture and you are not playing with boost, all you might really need are:
1 - EGT
2- Oil Pressure
You do not actually need a boost gauge if you're not playing with the boost.
If you are playing with boost in a minor way (i.e. just a boost controller) you should get.
1 - EGT
2 - Oil Pressure
3 - Boost
Again, you do not really need a boost gauge for driving around; but its useful for tuning
So, nowyou're going with the big boys. You have your boost controller and maybe an FMIC and bigger turbo and hopefully you also have an AFR or ecu upgrade, bigger injectors and a more potent fuel pump.
1 - EGT
2 - Oil Pressure
3 - Boost
4 - A/F (a real one, not the blinky junk)
Why don't I mention Oil Temp? Well oil pressure and oil temperature are basically numbers that are a function of one another. High pressure is high temperature. However, pressure is not a function of temperature if you have an open system... i.e. an oil leak. This reading would be misleading on two counts, and depending on how you choose to decipher. A big oil drop would make for high temperatures... but wait, didn't I just say that high pressure is high temperature? That's riiiiight :D Friction.
A/F meters are a tricky case. They can be helpful and they can be misleading. It depends on how it works. Does it have its own sensor? Is it a good sensor? Does it work off the ECU signal? Does the stock sensor apply to your setup? I've you've seen one of thse blinky A/F meters, you might, like me, find them hard to read. They are blippin' around like mad all the time. I do not find them useful. My preference would be to watch my EGT. High EGTs mean two things: restricted flow and lean. If you've removed enough cats and your pipes are wide enough for your application (as you should if you are going to muck with boost) you're running lean, no doubt. So, instead of an A/F, when on the road I'd rely on an EGT. If I find I am getting high EGT problems, I'd hook up a computer, OBD gadget, what-have-you, and get real data.
If I was racing this car, especially in a touring/rally type of scenario, I would get a water temp also.

Thanks jason, that cleared up alot. So I don't need oil temp and oil pressure, just oil pressure. So now I am left with three pod spots for Boost, EGT, and Oil Pressure....
My only choices for guages (since I'm getting the Defi BFs) is Turbo, Oil Press, Fuel Press, Oil Temp (which is out now), Water Temp, and EGT......
Any ideas? Cause I think I'd want the Boost guage in the most visible spot.....

I went for the Sport Comp Autometers... they're cheap, they match the interior well, and the west coast Summit distro is in my town, so I can just go pick them up w/o fussing over online orders.
I got the modded 52mm center pod, and a dual a-pillar pod.
a-pillar: boost, ETG
center: oil press, oil temp, and a clock
I may ditch the clock for fuel press, a/f, or water temp if i decide I need one of those down the line... but for now, I know what time it is.

Scott,
Do you have pictures of the set up? I'm thinkin of going the same route as you, as far as pods go.
Thanks,
