2002 MonteCarlo 4 Hour DVD Free Pass Around
Hey guys, For those who dont have speed vision or didnt get a copy of the rally I have a DVD with the 3 1 hour Day summarys and the 1 hour Rally in review ( it does NOT have the 30 min preview). I am NOT selling a copy of this DVD ( just too much work to duplicate right now with the other GB) but I am offering a pass around of a copy so you can rip it, copy it, dump it to VHS, or what ever.
Just let me know if anyone is interested in this. The quality is pretty good ( better than the group buy, since this was directly off DSS to DVCPRO format, then edited and compressed to MPEG2).
I honestly dont want to be involved with the actual passing around of the DVD, so it would simply be a person to person trade deal. Think of it as a free WRC rental :)
To keep people from walking with it I would recomend keeping to people who didnt register JUST to get involved in this.
If the DVD gets scratched or broke the person who did it owes me 10$ :) and I will burn another to pass around. I plan on doing this for all the races if I get enough interest.
As I said I do NOT want to do this for money and dont even want to be involved, I just want to help anyone out who didnt have a chance to see it all or didnt have speed vision. ( its also the only reasonable way to hand out copies of this kind of coverage)

Could you send it to me? I missed the 3rd day + final review coverage of the rally.
If you mail it to me I can rip it into Divx and then mail it right back to you. Actually Since the only time I would need the DVD is the actual rip stage, I could mail it back the next day :)
If you are OK with it, then tell me and I'll PM you my address

I call claim to it after you guys. While I do have SpeedVision, I unfortunately had other obligations that prevented me from seeing ANY of the coverage. Ugh...
Oh, do I count as having been registered long enough? :p

Clegg - Do you have Morpheus? It is a great file swapping service, and you could just put the file out there for people to grab. (if you have a big enough internet connection that is...)

i'm with bbbradley on this one ... is it possible that somebody that has the capability to rip to divx (pio!pio!) can host it or throw it out there for us to download? or is it time to invest in a dvd-r...:o
| Clegg | 01-22-2002 01:16 PM |
well its going to work like this, I will mail it to the first person who asked for it, and he will have to mail it to the second and the second person will mail it to the 3rd... geddit? :)
My writer had some issues last night but all are resolved now, once I get the final DVD burned ( this afternoon) I will mail it out to the first person who wants it.
There are some MPEG artifacts in it in places... simply cause I went with the 3 hour compression Vs the 10 hour compression on the video. ( couldnt take CPU time away from the 2001 GB I am running) They arent bad at all, and deffinitely way above VHS quality.
pio pio PM or email me your addy

Cool I am burning the DVD tonight, I should have it mailed out in a day or so. the 2001 GB's are hopefully going to have the first set done and shipped by the end of the week... But I am running into some technical problems that may delay it a few days

Totally off topic...but...
Clegg, what kind of a computer and burner setup are you using? Mac or a PC? If a PC, what burner do you have and what software are you using? I am contemplating a new PC for home and I want to make sure I have a DVD burner with the capability to do this. I tape stuff on my PVR all the time and I want to burn it to DVD for archival purposes.
Thanks for your response.

the computer setup is:
( well its 2 setups I have switched mid stream)
Setup 1 was:
1.3Ghz P3 CPU
AOpen DDR mobo
100GB ATA100 7200RPM WD HD as the dedicated A/V Drive
20 GB ATA100 7200 RPM WD HD as the data/app drive.
512mb DDR PC2400 Ram
Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD-R/DVD-RW
Old Turtle Beach Montego II Aureal PCI sound card
Matrox RT-2000 NLE suite and cards.
Netgear 10/100 FullDupe nic
Running on Windows 2000
Apps used to make the DVD and process the video:
Adobe Premire 6.01
Adobe Photoshop 6.01
Adobe After Effects 5 ( not for these but for others)
the TMPGEnc MPEG2 Encoder or Ligos MPEG2 VBR Encoder.
DVDit PEv2.5 to build the DVD VOB's
Prassi PrimoDVD2.0 to do the writing and verifying of the masters
Nero 5.5 to do te copying
I also have ReelDVD, Maestro 2.5, Scenarist, and Spruce I have used to make the DVD VOBS and images.
Setup 2 is the same except for its a 1.6Ghz AMD Athlon ( 1.4 @ 1.6), with 512mb PC133 SDR ram on an Abit KT7-A RAID ( I hate the mobo but it works so I cant complain)
All the recording, editing and burning happens on that box. The compression takes place on a Dual 1.4Ghz AMD Athlon box with 1GB of ram. Since it would take 16 hours to compress on the 1.6Ghz Box, it only takes 8 on the Dual 1.4Ghz box.
All I gotta say is 100 GB is NOT ENOUGH. I fill the drive almost daily ( cause there are lots of format conversions and such that for a short time takes up 2x the space on the drive per race).

Hey Clegg!
I have an RT-2000 too :) don't bother sending the dvd, i can take the exported avi's from premiere :) (j/k)
I use pretty much all the same stuff as you. premiere 6, afterfx, nero, etc, but i havn't actually authored dvds yet (so far only used my firewire dvd-r as a backup drive) - just got it last week and backed up about 60 gigs of work (woulda killed myself if it woulda b4 the backup...)
When i get ready to author dvds though i know who i'm callin with questions! :D
can't wait to see it!
btw you rock for doing this. i know how much time it takes to put something like this together, and you have gone so far out of your way doing this it is ridiculous.

i also posted to the GB about hosting rips of all the dvd's and the same goes for the 2002 monte carlo rally...
if somebody does rip it to divx (hopefully the first person to get the dvd (pio!pio!)), i can host it on my computer through my school's t1 line.
my computer is always on so all of you iclubbers will have uninterrupted access to it.
just in case you didnt catch my post on the GB thread, in order to keep random web leechers from stealing my bandwidth, i will make accounts for all people who post to this newsgroup. (of course each account will be uncapped in terms of download:) ) i check iclub multiple times throughout the day so you shouldnt have to wait very long at all.

iemonslice: I'll send it to you to host once I finish :)
Assuming all the commercials are cut out, I figure 2 nights of coverage can fit on 1 700mb cdr...so 2 cd's total for rally monte carlo (not including the 30 min rallyxs thing of course)

inside the cover it says that you can keep it for 1 week at the most then send it to the next person. I would ask that you keep it for the shortest time possible.

iBlueVirus: that's what iemonslice is preparing :)
wigglesxjr I should be mailing it to you Friday morning.
I ripped it to my harddrive and currently the first day is encoding.
Some remarks: The audio compressed suprisingly well, I manages 108kbps with the --r3mix -V2 -b32 setting of lame (--r3mix is what a lot of people consider to be the best quality/filesize compromize, and adding -V2 -b32 makes it about 10% smaller and the expense of some audio quality that the majority of people can't hear. Since The audio source was a tv, it's not like the quality is CD quality to begin with, so a good compromise).
Also since the true source was the tv, it is fully interlaced NTSC video, so the encoding is taking about twiceas long since I'm using a smart deinterlacing filter which should hopefully remove interlacing artifacts. Since it's a full screen 4:3 vid and not a 16:9 widescreen, I couldn't crop out any black bars and therefore I had to lower the resolution a bit to make it fit under certain quality constraint ( > .22 bits per pixel per frame).
I'm gonna take a look at the output quality once it's done to determine if some tweaking needs to be done. One thing I have in mind is to decimate the frame rate (ie, every 5 frames, merge 2 of the frames into one frame (or even drop the frame). dunno if it needs to be this frequent) so that I can drop the framerate from 29.97 (NTSC) into 23.976 (film). The reasoning is that by going to a lower framerate I can save about 15000 frames of video, which means a higher bit/pixel/frame compromise (to about > .27) I've done frame decimation on cartoons before, but I dunno how it will look on video. So I'm not gonna try it unless the 29.97 NTSC video looks bad.
Well there you go! Each day of video is taking about 5 hours to do (it would be half that time, but the deinterlacing is eating up some time) so that's 20 hours of encode time at least (unless I gotta do the frame rate decimation).
That's about it.
David

Well, I woke up in the morning and took a look at the result. Not bad! But the high motion scenes (such as an aerial shot of a car, with the background moving rapidly is slightly blurry, so imma try something. I don't think I need to do frame rate decimation, but I will try a temporal smoother filter to see if that helps.
The temporal smoother won't directly increase quality on the high motion scenes per se, but it WILL make the movie more compressable, which will lead to a higher bit allocation for the high motion scenes

hey dave (pio!pio!) i PMed ya with your login and pw to upload. the directory i set up that contains the upload directory has 2 gigs free. if u need more then tell me so i can set you up w/ more space.
afterwards, i will post my ip and general login w/ capped uploads. i plan on making a general iclub account w/ 10 max logins and capped at 60KB. And anybody else that pm's me or posts to this thread that wants a personal account i will make them one.

Just FYI, some of those artifacts are from my MPEG2 compression. So you wont get rid of them. you may want to watch the DVD first and then the compression you did to see what the difference is

Well after reencoding the first day 3 times, it is still too blurry compared to the dvd so I am going to do 1 day per CD
so 700 mb x 4 is what we're looking at. hehehe I'm a stickler for quality

700mb per race isnt bad, since in Mpeg2 they are 2GB a peice

ok, more space. DONE. just upload whenever u can.

I'll probably be done with all 4 on Sunday or Monday and will upload them then (my athlon 900 is slow for this, I'm getting 6-7 fps)

iemonslice: Since I was on the first page, can I get a login as well? If not in the first group of users, how about the second? You guys rock, and make it bearable for those of us that don't have Speedvision(Channel) yet. Thanks again.
