Tell me about it...according to weather.com the snow is supposed to start at midnight or so and I have to leave at like 4am to get down to the EVO school. We're not supposed to get much winter precip, but seeing as I'm on Azenis right now, any amount is too much...

Go to http://www.scca.com/amateur/solo2/prosolo/2004/atlanta/, and click the Entry List tab at the top. I don't think you need to sign up for MAE if you go that way, at least it doesn't ask me for name and password.

I have the car mostly packed! Got those tires out of the basement. :D I'll be leaving tomorrow afternoon, directly from work.

Cutoff for sign up is midnight EST, so registration is now closed- total: 193 and only 10 left in SM

Hey STX guys-

I talked with several of you on my other thread regarding the WRX I just bought and am trying to run in the Atlanta Pro this weekend. The car is STX-prepped (albeit lightly), and the only issue was with an aftermarket BOV on the car.

It was offered by a few to "give me a pass" on that issue for the first race, due to limited time to get a stock piece and install. I had located a stock one, however, and was to have it installed in time for the race. HOWEVER, as I received it and tried to install it TODAY, it is missing the fitting on the side which goes to I-don't-know-where. (Big hole). :furious:

Local dealer does not have one in stock, of course, and can't get me one until Tue. Can't find any in the junkyards around here either, as WRX's are scarce in these parts.

SOOOOOO.... Does anyone have a stock BOV they can loan/sell me, who will be in ATL?

Assuming no.... How 'bout it, guys? Can we maybe let it slide? Don't think it'll amount to much, in the end. I WILL have it from here out. :D

Buy you guys a beer if ya let me play with you this weekend!

I didnt realize that aftermarket BOVs are disallowed in STX, i thought for sure they WERE allowed in STX.

But anyway, i have one in my garage, I will throw it in with my stuff and you can borrow it.

I'm not going to protest you in any event, but I'll check around Knowledge tomorrow to see if there's a spare around. I quickly read through some of your other thread, and one thing that occured to me is that you should check the boost line connector. It hasn't come up recently in competition (after Kiko got protested for it), but it's very common for people not involved in autocross to change that piece.

Hopefully I'll have my car assembled in time to compete. It's been a busy last few weeks, and every part showed up late. Found a blown shock at the last minute to top it all off too. Oh well. It looks to be more of a test and practice for me than anything.

Give me a buzz on my cell during the day tomorrow and remind me about the BOV. My cell is 678-549-4099.

ok, I see.
Warp3 02-15-2004 09:24 PM

I ended up 10th of 11 in SM...I know I could have placed at least a few spots higher, though. If I didn't push so hard on the right course on Saturday, I could have come through with a decent overall time. Plus, my last run on the left-hand course felt incredible until I overcooked the kink at the end and had to nearly stop to keep from coning!!!

Oh well...on the plus side, I was matched against a 2.5L WRX (55sm) during the 2 saturday heats and actually kept up with him all the way down the initial straight in my N/A 2.5RS!!!

Speaking of which, it was nice to meet all the Subaru folks I hadn't met before! Hope to do battle with you again some day! :D

I had a blast, thanks to Eric1855 for letting me drive the town whore in FP. I was tickled to end up in 7th/9 in the modified index, beating the 2 guys driving the Cobra-powered Focus (the Fobra?). I definitely want to do more ProSolos in the future, as much fun as it was in the cold and rain, I can only imagine how much more enjoyable it would be on a 70*+ sunny weekend. It was great meeting everyone, I look forward to seeing you all agian at other events this year.

I had a good weekend, once I decided to give up on the Hoosiers and run my street tires (Dunlop Winter Sport M2 snow tires). Improved my times on Sunday by 1.610 seconds -- due entirely to the tire selection, I'm sure. Wound up with 3rd place in SM.

Here's a photo of me tossing up a wave of water. This was on the Hoosiers, so you can imagine that I'm not exactly gripping the road all that well:

Congrats to Phil Bedard in the #55 Subaru for 2nd place in SM. He and I both stepped it up on Sunday and bumped our way onto the podium.

Wow, STX looked brutal.
There was some great driving in STX this weekend. I did not fit into that category. I have a few pictures of me pushing water like those above. Not good when you're down to 1/32 of tread on the part of the tire in contact with the asphalt. All the top STX drivers were on fresh, full tread rubber, as was Kiko.

The good thing about Saturday and Sunday morning was that the rain was steady and consistent. We never had a big downpour, and we never had a break long enough to dry the surface until Sunday afternoon. I'd say the results are fairly representative of which cars in class perform well in the rain (or in some cases, who brought Dirt Stockers).

Joel
dwx 02-16-2004 03:45 PM

I was happy to pull out second place on Sunday. Jack and I both improved quite a bit even though the downpour started as we started running. I was trying to get used to the car, which hasn't been autocrossed with in 5 months, and the car is completely different this year. Before the event I had never even had the car above 10psi except on a dyno. ProSolo is probably a bad event to try and figure out a new car, but it was a blast (besides the weather) and I was just going to try it out and have fun. I was borrowing some RE070s (STI tires) on a set of Prodrive P7s from Damon (thanks Damon!).

I was basically spinning my tires through 1st gear on the launches (which everyone probably was) and especially on the right course on Sunday, I'd spin the tires getting on the gas. At the end I was running 12psi to try and keep the car under control and it helped. I didn't really drive all that well but AWD and the fact the car has alot of get up and go helped out. Congrats to Neal Tovsen for pulling out some great times with the dirt stockers. :)

The super challenge was fun even though I lost in the 2nd round. I had won on raw time I believe (against the DSP car that won the challenge) but I coned both sides. I also think the chance of me breaking out was very high at that point with the conditions drying.

It was great meeting some new people including most of the SM competitors and fellow Subaru guys.

Dussander 02-16-2004 03:57 PM

It would be interesting to do a test of which street tire is best in the rain for Solo2 since you can't run the dirt stockers in ST*.
Joel, you were probably too busy helping with the event...yeah, that was it. :D
dwx 02-16-2004 05:57 PM

The RE070s worked pretty well. There is going to be a difference between tires that work well in the wet and tires that work well in the wet and the cold. I'm not sure it ever hit 45 degrees out there last weekend, conditions where azenis and mxs and whatnot don't work well in, and then you throw rain into the mix... I was contemplating running my Nokian WR all-season tires on Sunday just because they still have grip in the cold and have a ton of siping. The sidewalls on them are jello though.
Eric1855 02-16-2004 06:00 PM

I was running on Goodyear Eagle GS-D tires. They are the ones that i drove down on, the victoracers never left the bags.

I didnt have any traction issues really, but the tires skipped alot when the car would start to slide, and that made it hard on turns and acceleration out of turns.

From my past experiences in STS, I'd have to throw in my vote for the Potenza S-03s as the king in wet conditions. The Azenis and KD will definitely outperform the S-03s in the dry, but add some water and the S-03s starts to feel right at home. One of my best raw finishes EVER at an autocross was running my 2.5RS in STS on S-03s during a rain-soaked event.

I don't know what Bridgestone does to the compound of those tires, but they've definitely got the wet traction thing down.

The only thing that pissed me off about this event was the fact that the reaction times did not count. No offense meant mike, but that would have made it a WHOLE different event in STX.....

Other then that, great driving my mike king. Way to pull it out on the last run, that was pretty sick. Next time leave that spare tire in, as I think it would have made a 40 thousandths difference ;)

Talk about the weekend of the Subaru! Awesome event. Cool to meet Paul and talk to all the other usual Subie crowd. It was SO PAINFUL to lose 10+ car lengths off the starting line to AWD during the first heat. We stopped autocrossing the Subaru last spring, and it seems like every major event since then has been in the rain!!

And mega-thanks to Shane for offering me a ride in the RS if the VW didn't make it. As of Thursday afternoon, I didn't think it would.

Though I'm not sure if I should thank Mike King for switching to STX or beat him up for leaving SM...I was learning a lot just trying to keep up with that Civic, but I guess I can't complain that he's beating up on somebody else for a change! I was asked at least three times this weekend why I didn't wear my 2003 Divisional jacket. Kinda funny how things work out, eh? Mike drove our old RS (now owned by Tony Adams...the silver one pictured above) about 18 months ago at the first Subaru Challenge...and I seem to remember he said it was his first time with AWD. Now he owns one! Welcome to the dark side.

Congrats to everyone else too. It was a great event. I think this must be the first National-level trophy for a car on snow tires!!!

It was funny how the news spread (and mutated) at the event... I must have had half a dozen people ask me whether it was really true that I ran on Blizzaks... (They were actually Dunlop Winter Sport M2 tires, the tires which Porsche recommends for their cars in the snow.)

If you were losing that much off the line, Neal, you must have been absolutely flying through the twisty sections...

Any time Phil... no worries and I hope they helped- looked like they held up pretty good, even in the Fulton County river :p I concur with Phil about running a new car setup and ProSolo NOT being the place to get yourself inline with a new feel. As most of you know, I love to tinker with the suspension aspect of the car as opposed to the power train. This was my first wet event, not to mention cold, on the Victos, which handled suprisingly well overall. The new Rev-Labs rack was great... except that I had done nothing but street drive it and ended up over driving the car thru both days (understeer is way easy on 11.5:1!!) Day 2 was better, but I never recovered from Saturday, so... eh, chalk it up to experience I suppose; aka D.F.L.

A big congratulations to Phil for 2d place (you killed my tires! hahahahaha  ) and to Nate for running my car for the first time and smokin me- ya gotta love gettin your ass tapped in your own car :p I enjoyed meeting all the "new people" this weekend such as KC, trhoppe and Warp3. I look forward to seeing you all again at another event and Phil- see ya in Peru buddy!!! Take it easy and watch that first left, it's a lou lou!!!

And mega-thanks to Shane for offering me a ride in the RS if the VW didn't make it. As of Thursday afternoon, I didn't think it would.

Speaking of which, anyone know where you buy these things? They don't appear to be listed under Hoosier on the TireRack site!?

Well, that was with the Radials in the first session when I lined up against the black WRX (was that you, BlackWerks?).

In the second session when I had the Dirt Stockers, I was lined up next to Dave Hardy's Civic. He was on Kumhos, which are better than the Hoosier A3SO3, but not up to par with the Dirt Stockers. I also have a bit more power than him, so I left on him pretty good. It would have been interesting to see how I did agains the Subies. In the last session, I was back on my SO3's against the BMW on Goodyear street tires. He left on me, but not nearly as much as the WRX in the first round.

Shane, the only place I know of to get Dirt Stockers is Mid-Atlantic Motorsports. That's "Hoosier Tom" who usually goes to all the big events. He is out right now with a bad case of pnemonia, I hear.

Dirt Stockers are only available up to 16" I think. But there is a new "wet" version of the SO4 that is available in 17-18. It isn't legal yet for autocross, but should be soon once they start producing a couple more sizes to meet the requirements. That should be a bad-a$$ tire. :D
