Co-driver Park dies in accident

Michael Park, co-driver for Markko Martin, has died after an accident on stage 15 of Wales Rally GB.
Martin's Peugeot 307 crashed heavily into a tree on Park's side during the 17-mile Margam stage.
It was confirmed at 1045 BST that Park, 39, from Newent in Gloucestershire, suffered fatal injuries. Estonian Martin escaped unhurt.
The stage was immediately halted, and organisers decided shortly afterwards to cancel the remaining two stages.
Police sealed off the stage, as is normal practice in such a situation, and began investigations.
A statement from the organisers said: "It is with deep regret that we confirm that Michael Park was fatally injured following an accident on special stage 15.
"The next of kin has been informed. The driver of car number eight, Markko Martin, is uninjured."
No spectators were involved in the accident.
Park, nicknamed 'Beef', was a highly-experienced co-driver who had worked with former champions Richard Burns and Colin McRae.
Married with children, he first began rallying on the world championship circuit in 1994 as Mark Higgins' co-driver.
Park teamed up with Martin in 2000 when the Estonian was rallying a privately-entered Toyota.
They stayed together at Subaru and Ford before moving to Peugeot this year.
The cancellation of the remaining stages means Citroen's world champion, Sebastien Loeb, wins the rally.
Sorry that the article does contain a spoiler about the results of the Wales Rally. I thought this might be a little more important. :(

I went to one of the web sites to see how much Loeb won by this time and I get this shocking news. I was really looking forward to Nikki being a "color man" for speed as well as being in the rally as a navigator. I just hope Speed TV still shows the rally and tastefully finds a way to cover this terrible event but not make it a sensation. It really serves to remind me of the dangers of rally racing and how the drivers and navigators face this on every stage.

Michael was a long time co-driver and I had the pleasure of talking with him briefly down in Mexico. He leaves behind two kids and a wife. It's a very sad day for rallying.

I met Micheal in the Karlstad airport one early Monday morning on the way home from the Swedish rally. Such a nice, reserved man, this is tragic news. I don't know what to think, but this is not a good Sunday when you turn on your computer and read this.
My heart has dropped to the bottom of my body, my thoughts are with Michael's family.
:(
Guh.

My condolences to his family, friends, fans and team mates. He was a class act indeed. And I also agree... what a class act for Loeb to put this in perspective...a win and a Championship are insignificant when compared to matters of this nature.
| leaknoil | 09-18-2005 02:12 PM |
If this isn't a perfect example why co-driver's deserve their names on the cars just a big and promently as the driver I don't what is. They risk their lives for the sport they love. They deserve the credit too and not just the tragedy.
very sad pic of him kneeling down ...
Found it (had to scroll right) what a depressing photo :(
It's always very sad when people die in motorsports. Teams and drivers spend so much money on reinforcing the car, adding crumple zones and other energy absorbing tactics, making better safety equipment, etc to prevent this.
No matter how strong a car is the human body is very susceptible to lateral and positive G loads.
My understanding is that he was a very nice guy and was always smiling and having a good time. He will be missed.:(

Beef was regarded as one of the best in the world and a true sportsman. This is so sad. It is also appears to be a similar impact to Lovell/Freeman's fatal impact. Completely freakish accident that is almost impossible to avoid regarless of the chassis reinforcement. I wonder if the seats had side head bolsters?
