DC Pro - Register yet? part 3

P.S. Where do you go for snowboarding? Maybe we should get together a NASIOC Motorsports winter meet for those of us up here in "can't race the car yet" land. Phil and I both snowboard. So does Jason. Pretty sure Billy either skis and/or snowboards. I'd imagine there are others too.
PMing you about it. (edit:your inbox is full)

Oh and I think Tom is trying to lock the thread.
Sam, I'm going to disagree with you here. There IS a reason and that reason is the lack of events available to us, especially on the east coast. Last year when I heard there were going to be limited events I decided what events I wanted to go to and signed up for them via fax in January. This was the only way I could ensure that I'd get in. Was I over reacting? Probably, but I wasn't in the situation that a lot regulars are in regarding the DC Pro. I did the same thing this year (Walnut Ridge, Peru, DC) only electronically. The limited number of events within reasonable driving range for me personally, necessitates registering way early, sometimes more than 4 months out.

Mike
It just strikes me as the same as when the hot new toy comes out and people rush out, trampling other and acting like animals to get it. And two weeks after Christmas you can find it anywhere.

I'm not a terrible procrastinator. But, I'm busy, and I'm not rich. Requiring registration so early is not practical for me. I have so much to remember on any given day (being self-employed, I have many things to do) that a events 1/3rd of the year from now doesn't really register. And I don't generally keep hundreds of dollars around for registration fees... I know I have to pay them, but I'd rather have that money in my bank than SCCA's. :) YMMV, and that's cool.

I think we do need to step back. This is getting ugly. I'm sure that if any of you met the others you'd find them to not be complete ********. :) I happen to know most everyone here arguing. I'm close to some, and friendly with others. I don't dislike any of them. :)

It'll work out. Arguing about it here does no good. Talk to SCCA.

Cliff Notes:
National didn't want a Pro at the Fairgrounds lot due to picky competitors

National couldn't afford Atlanta Motor Speedway with paddock on asphalt (paddock on grass would have made it closer to being affordable, but again, picky competitors)

Well crap. I go skiing and miss this.

Here's hoping there are 4 days worth of people willing to cancel. I know, I know, fat chance.

It would've been nice to run against Neary again.

While I didn't like the bumps I thought the plan to have grid on top of them this year would make everyone happy. The fairground lot with the elevation change was a lot of fun and a big challenge.
jcroy66 03-01-2006 09:52 AM

I agree with Phil. When I saw that there wasn't going to be an Atlanta Pro, I had just figured the problems that I'd heard about last year meant that Atlanta Region had decided not to deal with it this year (which I would have certainly understood). I didn't realize that Atlanta had offered and the National office had said no. I was aware that the National office had turned Detroit Region down for Oscoda.

Both of those losses from this year's schedule are really unfortunate IMO. Yes, Oscoda was a long haul for many people. But from what I can tell, it was certainly a much better option for our New England friends than Walnut Ridge or even Peru. And it was the event I most looked forward to each year - I always loved the Oscoda events, because it was a great, intimate, party atmosphere. Much more laid back than most of the other events. As for Atlanta, as Phil said, I didn't like the bumps, but with the plans to reorient to avoid the worst of the bumps, that seemed like a fine solution. I definitely would have made a return trip to Atlanta.

So to hear that both of those regions wanted to hold Pros and National turned them down?? I think it's time for me to write another letter...
Corey 03-01-2006 10:20 AM

^^^^ Agreed.

I think the Atlanta region did a great job with the PRO and Tour last year. I was looking forward to a return trip. Same goes with Oscoda. I'm going to miss the catfish!

Have you been to a DC event? You're in for a treat... Tour courses there have had turns where you had to get the car aimed for a gate before you ever saw it since it was over the hill crest! Doing a slalom on across the side of a hill is a new experience.

SloRice 03-01-2006 03:46 PM

Justin, I don't think there is a cancellation fee.

I cancelled an event last year and I didn't get charged anything.
cooleyjb 03-01-2006 04:01 PM

If you cancel closer to the event you don't get a full refund. I forget what the cutoff date is.
solo2wrx 03-01-2006 05:12 PM
If you cancel closer to the event you don't get a full refund. I forget what the cutoff date is.
10 days before the event.
crystalhelix 03-01-2006 05:16 PM
10 days before the event.
That's probably the buffer as to when you'd go from waiting list to "registered". 10 days isn't a lot of time to get ready.

J

I asked if I get a discount if I already have a TireRack sticker.
DrBiggly 03-01-2006 09:40 PM

Jen,
Where would one need to write a letter to in order to vote for having an event in Atlanta again?

It's sad that folks are selling their registration on eBay. That's just silly.

Wait, is there anything in the rules about registration being non-transferrable? If not then this may become more commonplace. :(

-Biggly
crystalhelix 03-01-2006 10:11 PM

If there was a buy it now option we could snag it for the Suby community.

Why sell it, it would be way more appreciated if he offered it to one of the "regulars" who didn't get chance to get in.

Sorry, I am still perplexed as to all the hub-bub that is going on right now.
steverife 03-01-2006 10:27 PM

That EBAY auction is funny as heck. I can't believe some folks are halfway taking it seriously.

I had planned on making the DC Pro my one national event of the year, but I never bothered to check registration because I didn't want to tie up my money for several months. Oh well.
trhoppe 03-01-2006 10:43 PM

For all of you people that don't want to pay until the event.

1) fill out paper form
2) put your CC# on it
3) fax it to SCCA
4) enjoy not being charged until after the event
5) ????
6) Profit!

I signed up for Peru last year, then cancelled. I think I was charged, then refunded the next billing period. I seem to recall being worried that I had lost my entry fee. I'll dig up my credit card statements to make certain.

edit: Billed $73 on 6/14/05, Credited $73 on 6/22/05. My billing statement ends on the 20th. I did, however, register online. Maybe that had something to do with it?
planetarygear 03-03-2006 10:30 AM

I just got in. Looks like they bumped up the entries to 225. Has anyone else mad it in?
jcroy66 03-03-2006 10:49 AM

Registering online will automatically charge you immediately. I don't know how they handle it for fax or mail-in credit card entries.
solo2wrx 03-03-2006 10:51 AM

This is odd, Pat Salerno is registered in STS with a Lotus Elise. Since when can you run a 2 seat car in STS? I guess it is just a misprint on the entry form probably.

He probably just selected the wrong class. It's fairly common now with the online entry system. Since it defaults to AM for the class, any event you look at has at least a couple misclassed AM cars...

Or, the only car he has listed in the "garage" is the Elise. I know I have 5 cars listed to choose from when I register online -- my two Camaros, Youngers' 330Ci, Grainger's TypeR and your STi. The worst part is that I can't delete any of them.

Not likely... since Brian is listed as 186 SS and there is no 86 SS. AND since Brain and Pat are good buds.

Of course if he is running STS I don't care what car it is, I'll just pack up and go home

Due to having to get to work early today (6:30am is way to early), I decided to ponder some not-work related things while at work.

Regarding security at FedEx Field....how is it? Is the lot fenced off? I'm just curious if my stuff is going to get jacked by some homeless guy during the middle of the night when I leave my car on the site.

I know this answer is in this thread I think, but I'm not searching 7 pages of BS to find it. Are there a list of hotels in the area?
trhoppe 04-11-2006 09:14 AM

I wouldn't leave anything not locked up out there. There are no fences or anything.

-Tom
Mhyrr 04-11-2006 10:11 AM

It's worth it to go a little further away to get a decent hotel, the area surrounding FedEx isn't the greatest.

We also have overnight security on the lot, but that isn't a guarantee either.

This very question was just on the WDCR-SCCA mailing list. They are hiring security for Friday and Saturday nights.

That being said.... I still wouldn't leave anything out without locks on it.

The ammo expenses alone...

I went to high school with several of the convicted felons residing near fedex. Bowie, Laurel, Columbia, Silver Spring are the safer bets. I have some issues with Lanham and Greenbelt, which I've seen suggested elsewhere. All are a short hike, and well worth the peace of mind.

In fact, I'd go ahead and suggest Nottinghams in Columbia as the favored, post-swerve watering hole, if only for the ease of access. 25 mins away, and not-so-frightening clientele.

Swap some paint, enjoy our beltway, do yourself a favor and travel a lil' bit.
