Looking into doing this, but saw some people were having trouble with worn out handles vibrating and were contemplating replacing the vent. If it helps, i was browsing japanparts and found a replacement handle for the vent. part 170-079-001 price: ~$27
Yep, I ordered that about 3 weeks ago from Graham... compeltely fixed my damn rattling issue with the handle.. :-)

Crap, why did I have to read this entire thread. Now I have to do this to my car. I hate using the AC and I ALWAYS have the windows down. Couple of questions for you guys though...
Would adding this vent cause any problems with either selling or trading the car in later on? Would it do anything to the value of the car or cause any problems with state inspections? (since it's a JDM mod, and not something you can just go have installed at the dealer)
Do you guys running the roof vent get rid of your AC too or keep it and just use it for defrosting/defogging?
You guys that have one installed, if it's like 90-100 degrees outside, does it cool you off more than just having all the windows down? From the sound of it, it brings a lot more air into the car but just wondering if it's still not enough to cool you off if it's hothothot outside.

resale: no. it's a genuine part.
state inspection: no, "it's an aftermarket sunroof"
some people use it as a "looks cool" mod -- some use it and get rid of the AC (as it's intended)
I've heard it works better than having the windows down because it actually tunnels air right onto your head/face/body without all of the noise of the windows down. I wouldn't recommend using it at over 65mph though... might pull it off.
and even if it doesn't cool you off enough, you can still roll your windows down.
with the weight of the AC compressor gone and the fuel you're saving, you'll get over being a little hot for a while... until recently, none of my cars even had working A/C... I survived :)

btw, anyone doing this, do not take the map light bracket out. leave it in, it lines up perfectly with two bolt holes on the bracket for the ventand doesnt get in the way of anything.

I too never use the AC, so I broke down and ordered the vent from japanparts acouple of days ago. So far so good, great communication. Can't wait for the vent!
I wouldn't recommend using it at over 65mph though... might pull it off.
:furious:
your "recommendation" is off base.
the only restriction is that you cannot open or close it over 80 kph (about 50-55 mph) or you may damage the latch mechanism.
the vent will not "pull off" at speeds well in excess of 100mph.
it is a Spec-C race part, remember?
;)
also, while the "beauty shots" of the various vehicles w/ vent installed are quite nice,
please put them in the Member's Gallery thread here:

ive seen a few diy writeups for the roof vent and they all used the same DREMEL dremel like the one drew used in this diy..it looks like the cutting disc on their dremel is smaller than mines..has anyone used the one pictured underneath or does anyone know if it will be sufficient? it is a DREMEL 400 series XPR and it has a max rpm of 35,000..the discs i have say they are for metal and ive used them to cut stripped bolts before

Should be more than adequate.. I borrowed a friends to do mine since I don't have a real dremel, but I don't think I used any type of special disk.. although after we got done cutting two holes (he was installing one too) the disk was pretty well worn down.
The roof of my car was surprisingly thin and I was done cutting in about 30 minutes even being really careful..

I cannot tell exactly what that blade is, but if it is some type of ceramic,
make sure that it is the re-inforced version
(w/ mesh on it)
the "regular" ones tend to fail in spectacular fashion.
eye protection is a must.
