I didn't see the race yet and im a MS fan so im disappointed to hear he lost. alonso is good though and i respect him as an excellent driver. I've heard that micheal tends to make more mistakes when he lets the race pressure get to him so im guessing thats what happened......
definately be seeing some more of him this year though.
definately be seeing some more of him this year though.

Great race, definately a good kick off for the season. :D
Driver quotes...
A nail-biting start to the 2006 season saw Michael Schumacher push world champion Fernando Alonso all the way in Bahrain in a race filled with drama and incident. The men involved explain
Fernando Alonso, Renault (1st):
This was a good, fighting win and I want to dedicate it to the mechanics and the team, for some fantastic pit-stops and the right strategy. There was a funny incident in the early stages, and I came very close to going out when Massa spun past me in turn 1. After that though, things went smoothly, and I knew that the key time would be around the second stop. I looked after the tyres at the start of the stints, so that I had something left at the crucial moment, and I was very confident that we would be able to do it. After that, I managed the performance, the car was running beautifully and I just concentrated on making no mistakes. The backmarkers were very fair today as well. I think the competition is a little bit closer than we thought overall, but this is the perfect start for the season.
Michael Schumacher, Ferrari (2nd):
All in all this is an excellent result and Im certainly not complaining about
finishing second. If someone would have told us during the winter months that this is the way we would have finished the first race of the season, I wouldnt have believed them. Today we must be really pleased with the result. On the other hand, I still have some mixed feelings because its seems that we could have been ahead and could have won the race. Considering how it ended up, its now clear that the qualifying lap that wasnt acknowledged in as far as refuelling this morning was concerned, was the decisive factor that played against us. Its a pity, because yesterday I had to back off because of the traffic. In any case its a great day for us because we know that we have an good car and we have an excellent potential to develop during the course of the season and this is very important. This year the fight for the championship will be very close: there are several good teams, all of which are capable of battling for the title and its great to be one of them.
Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren (3rd):
This is a great result after the disappointment of yesterday, but we have known that the car was very strong all weekend. We thought that we had a chance to score some points today, even though we were starting from the back of the grid, but to get a podium is fantastic, The first few laps were crucial to this result, and luckily I managed to overtake a lot of cars at the first corner; I was up to 13th by lap two even though the cars in front were all lighter than me. We then gained some more places later on as a result of our strategy. The outcome is even more important to the whole team, who have been working so hard throughout the winter, as we didn't know where we were after testing and everyone had been saying that we were struggling. However we really have improved over the past few weeks. It proves that we are competitive and if not for yesterday we could have been even better.
Jenson Button, Honda (4th):
"Had I not had such a bad start then this could have been a great race for us. The pace of the car was absolutely there but the strategy didn't pan out because I lost places off the start and wasn't where we had planned to be at the pitstops. We may not have a podium but we have a very competitive car and if you look at the lap times when we weren't in traffic we were genuinely as quick as anyone out there. I think we go to Malaysia feeling extremely positive. If we can address the clutch issue which caused the problem with the start we will be able to fight even harder with the competition."
Juan Pablo Montoya, McLaren (5th):
I have not really been totally comfortable with the set up of my car all weekend, which was clear during all the practice sessions. Obviously I am a little disappointed finishing in fifth as I know that the car could do so much more, but it just wasn't working for me this weekend. However it was a steady race and for the team to get two cars finishing in the points could be very important later in the season. The four points I have scored are good considering the circumstances. I am now looking forward to the next race in Malaysia, where we can improve further on these results."
Mark Webber, Williams (6th):
Todays race was superb, a really good job by the whole team, we really could not have asked for more. Having both cars finishing was very useful, we have collected a lot of data and this will help with our understanding of the tyres. Malaysia will be a different race altogether and our performance today will really help with our preparation for next weekend.
Nico Rosberg, Williams (7th):
I really enjoyed myself today and the final result was a good outcome.
Unfortunately I made a mistake at the first corner, expecting that Heidfeld
might leave me more room and the incident put me right back. However, it was a super effort by the team and I really enjoyed fighting my way up, particularly battling with Coulthard. The final result - seventh place and the fastest lapof the race -is more than I could have hoped for in my first race. Today was a great start and Im looking forward to the next race.
Christian Klien, Red Bull (8th):
After the problems we suffered during the winter, its great that both cars crossed the finish today. The first part of the race went well and I was able to make up a few positions, but later on I wasnt able to keep the same pace. The cars grip seemed to give way a little and I lost some time. I also had a problem with the clutch. Its a shame that Nico (Rosberg) overtook me in the final laps as it meant I dropped from seventh to eighth in the closing stages.
Felipe Massa, Ferrari (9th):
I must say that it really was a pity. Right from the start of the weekend I had a very competitive car and its a shame that I wasnt able to pick up some points. When I spun I was very close to Alonso and I just touched the brakes but then I lost the rear end and spun off. During the pit stop I lost a lot of time to change the right rear tyre and thats when I lost any chance of finishing in the points. For the rest of the race I was flat out all the time and I managed to climb back up to 9th. Its a pity that Ive come away from this race with no points, but Im looking forward to get my own back because I know that we have everything it takes to perform well.
David Coulthard, Red Bull (10th):
I flat spotted early on when I was wheel to wheel with Nick (Heidfeld), which afterwards caused huge vibrations in the car. Theres so much vibration when that occurs, you lose visibility, your eyes are shaking in your head and it feels like youre sitting on top of a spin drier. You cant read the pit board nor the displays in the car. The team wanted me to do an oil transfer, but I had to ask them what colour the button was that I needed to press, as you cant read anything when its like that. Its horrible and rounds off a pretty disappointing weekend.
Vitantonio Liuzzi, Toro Rosso (11th):
"We were expecting a bit more after the start we had to the weekend. But it was good to see the chequered flag in a reasonable position. Unfortunately during the race we did not have the pace we needed.
Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (12th):
Obviously things started badly as Nico Rosberg spun me in the first corner. I lost a lot of places and that ruined my race. I was able to fight back and had a particularly exciting battle with Coulthard. Its difficult to assess our performance after only one race but naturally its disappointing when you start 10th and cant score any points.
Scott Speed, Toro Rosso (13th):
"I'm pleased to have got through to the chequered flag in my first Grand Prix without making any mistakes. The balance of my car was not quite right during the first stint, but we were able to fix that at the first pit stop. After that, I think our pace improved and was good.
Ralf Schumacher, Toyota (14th):
"This weekend has been a struggle from the start. After our problems in qualifying yesterday, we used this afternoon as a test session to collect data to improve for the coming races. I was on a three-stop strategy whereas Jarno was on two stops so at least we can now compare the data from our two cars. This way we can try to learn as much as possible about our new package. Of course this was not the way we hoped to start off the 2006 season but we have to take things as they are and try to move forward from here. We don't know where the problem is but hopefully we will soon find out. The early races will be difficult but all we can do is push as hard as we can to move back up the grid."
Rubens Barrichello, Honda (15th):
"It's a disappointing way to finish my first race for the team but in the early stages we saw a taste of our potential. Jenson and I had a great race with each other early on which I'm sure got a few people excited! Soon after though I knew we had a gearbox problem and I had to try to race with one gear missing. I was unable to push and had no chance of a points finish, so it wasn't a good way for me to spend the race. We know that the pace is there so we just have to resolve our problems for next weekend when I'm sure we will have a much better race."
Jarno Trulli, Toyota (16th):
"This has obviously been a very disappointing weekend for the whole team and today was no exception. We chose to go with a two-stop strategy so we could make comparisons with Ralf's data for future reference but it was a hard afternoon's work for me. I just pushed as hard as I could for the whole race - but the harder I pushed the slower I seemed to go! I don't know what the solution is because there was nothing particular going wrong, we were simply not quick enough. It's a difficult way to start the season but we will work hard as a team to try and do our best to make up as much ground as possible."
Tiago Monteiro, Midland (17th):
Obviously, it wasn't an easy weekend. The T-Car wasn't really set up for me, so it was a compromise in terms of seating position and other things, and fairly uncomfortable to drive throughout the race. But I had to remain focused on the race, pushing as hard as I could to bring the car home. We had our share of trouble but, you know, that's racing. Let's hope we got all our bad luck out of the way here so that we can look forward to better results for the rest of the season. The car is definitely faster and better than it was last year. It's not quick enough at the moment, but I'm sure we can find the speed."
Takuma Sato, Super Aguri (18th):
It is a fantastic result for us. I think that the boys in the garage deserve to be happy because they worked so hard to get us here to Bahrain. Although today we had radio communication and fuel rig problems, which is why there was some confusion during our pitstops, I think that everyone in the team has done a really good job. It is a positive step for us and I am very happy with todays result. It was only a shame for Yuji that we could not bring the two cars home, but it is the great start that the team needed.
Yuji Ide, Super Aguri (DNF):
"I wanted to finish the race very much but the engine just stopped. I had the same problem as I had on Friday. Earlier in the race I couldn't put the gear into neutral so I over-ran at the pit stop. I don't know what I could do to make the car better but I know the mechanics have been working hard so I feel bad for my lack of experience. I will review the problem with engineers and I will do my best to finish the next race in Malaysia.
Jacques Villeneuve, BMW Sauber (DNF):
My start was not particularly great, but I managed to find my way through the first few corners and to stay out of trouble there. The race set-up was fine and I settled into a good rhythm. I overtook Coulthard and stayed in front of Raikkonen for quite a while. Then all of a sudden I started to lose power, and that was it.
Giancarlo Fisichella, Renault (DNF):
I had the same problem as in qualifying, with a big loss of power on the engine. It was OK for the start of the race, but then I just lost power all the way through the rev range and the car was much slower on the straights. I was still able to fight with the cars around me, but I was a long way from the potential we could do with full power. Then I had an hydraulic problem which forced me to retire. The good thing is that we have another race in one week's time, and the car is clearly very quick. I want to bounce back strongly in Malaysia.
Christijan Albers, Midland (DNF):
"It's a shame that I didn't get to drive at all, because we were looking forward to gathering more data for Malaysia. It's really unfortunate, because we've never had that (driveshaft) problem before and it's just one of those things that's impossible to predict. What makes it even more frustrating is that I think our capabilities were much better than what we showed in qualifying and had we not suffered such bad luck, I think we might have run a reasonable race."

One time is understandable if Montoya was down on power. But he did it a second time, in the same corner. Does Montoya not understand the concept of protecting the line? That's a racer's error, if you ask me. There's been plenty of times where the slower driver has ended up in front of a faster driver. Look at Jacques. His car is super wide. He knows how to protect the line(though I don't like him because of it).

You expected him to keep holding up the obvously faster car for what? An hour?

Anyway this looks to be a great year coming up with four maybe five teams in with a shout of winning races.
If Nico did not make the mistake at the beginning, who knows he might have finished in the top 5, maybe even podium?
Yeah, definitely can't underestimate Williams. Mark Webber is kind of blah, but Nico Rosberg, he has potential

'Til the race ended would have been best. Jacques, is a good example. He pisses people off doing what he does(driving a very wide car), but that's racing. Last I checked, you're supposed to do the best you possibly can. That's pretty much what Michael has done to a certain extent. He may have had a marginally slower car than others(in some races), but he has always kept his ground and didn't allow people to pass.
I don't give Montoya a whole lot of credit, and there's reasons for that. He half-asses most of the races. Every once in a while he'll come up with a brilliant pass, and then chill afterwards. His attitude seems to be "I made it to the bigs, now I'll collect a paycheck". He especially doesn't like Kimi, 'cuz he's always being beaten by him.

your missing the point. If a football teams wins a game because the other team had alot of penalties and turnovers, does that mean the winning team did a spectacular job? no.
Alonso did outdo schumi, but not by schumi doing his best and alonso doing better. Alonso did average for him or most front runners and schumi just made mistakes. Im not taking all credit away from alonso, he was very cool the whole race and made no mistakes, so he did a great job. But im just saying he didnt decide the race.
to be 100% honest, the mclaren technicians decided the race when they did a poor job putting kimis car back together after the electrical problem. But all of that is racing so it doesnt change a thing.

This is gonna be a GREAT season! :D
I've still got hope for Honda.. at least in the constructor's championship!

Two ways to look at this.
It's very possible the losing team was forced into making penalties or mistakes by a superior team just getting the best of them.
Alonso had all the chance in the world to screw up the whole race and then with that red car in his mirrors late. He didn't and won.
Shuey chuffed up two conrers just after FA came out of the pits for the last time. He was on warm tires and should have had the advantage.
No matter what the best driver and team wins every race.

exactly. you have to look at the first post i responded with that to. Im not taking away all of his credit, just merely stating he didnt make the race, and that people give him more credit then he deserves really. Hes obviously very fast, and super calm when it comes down to it, so he is a great driver, but he does have great luck too.

That's cool. You're not alone in disagreeing with my opinion of JPM. That's fine though:). Everyone's entitled to their opinion. As long as no one's toes got stepped on, it's all good. If I did or if I offended, I extend an olive branch.
I think there is one thing that all of us can agree on. Judging by the first race this should turn out to be quite an exciting season.
I have not figured out why so many people on this site can't give respect to Alonso. I think he drove a very good race while making few mistakes, if any and is a good world champion.
Honestly, I would have to say that many people choose drivers and cars for one of two reasons:
1. Technical Excellence - Ability to do something, great performance, etc.
2. Ability to Stir Emotion - Racing heritage, relation to other great racers/teams, etc.
For me, Alonso just doesn't register. I don't know why, but I couldn't care less if he wins. I like him being there for the competition, but I feel like the championship should have been Kimi's. That is my opinion, and does not need to be based in reality. I really, really want to see Kimi win this year. First, I believe he is more than fast enough to do it. Secondly, I see Nico dominating in the next couple of years and might have to start cheering for him. I also want to see Scott Speed do well, and hope that works out. So...
Drivers I like
Kimi (emotion and ability)
Nico (emotion and ability)
S. Speed (emotion)
Massa (emotion, since it was really cool seeing him do well in the Ferrari in qualifying)
DC (emotion)
Anybody from RBR and STR :)
Teams
Ferrari (emotion and ability)
RBR and STR (emotion)
Honda (ability, although watching Button and Barrichello beat on each other was pointless)

and I for one think Alonso is the real deal along with Kimi, and Schumi, etc... One thing I cant figure out is why he would want to go to McLaren... when Renault is giving him all the tools to get another championship. Hasnt he seen what Kimi is going through?

Err, I didn't mean that he has emotion, but rather he invokes emotion. Watching him dominate one second and then seeing his car grenade the next is incredibly frustrating. I wonder how many fans learned about the 10 position rule with engine changes through Kimi. So, by emotion, I mean I want to see them win irrespective of ability. For some though, I want them to win and I'm sure they can.

I can only imagine that he has good reason to do so. I mean, he really doesn't appear that stupid to throw it away. I guess there are more things going on behind the scenes that we fans don't know about.

Think of the context though. A Super Aguri car finishing all the laps of the race *is* an incredible result.

Although I am not a fan of Super Aguri, in its defense, it's a new car for the team. They probably don't have a lot of tech specs on the car or hardly anything for that matter. I think regardless of how many times they pitted, the important thing is that they finished.
They are a "pick-a-part" team. Like someone said before, finishing is a big deal in itself. To use a 4 year old chassis and an engine, both of which they didn't develop and finish at a grand prix level is impressive. I'm not saying they are good but hell, for a first outing, that's a good result. In upcoming seasons with "better drivers," and more involved development, Super Aguri will be better.

The best thing about the Super Aguri car is that it's so slow that Sato won't be able to knock anyone off the course with one of his boneheaded banzai moves

So happy for Kimi. Think he managed to pull a fantastic podium out of some unbelievable circumstances... He seems to be really good at that!
I think the comment of the day had to be Machett calling Super Aguri "Super Best Friends". That was fantastic. Almost as good as "Dude! The car is on fire!" last year....
I couldn't be happier that it is F1 time again!!!

Mika
Maybe somewhat...but its VERY clear the bias that goes on with Kimi in the public eye.
Look at all the posts saying how amazing his drive was today (no doubt it was). But when JPM drove from DEAD last to 2nd last year, did anyone post on what an amazing drive he had? No. Kimi is no doubt the better performer, but when you look at the races JPM actually competed in last season (when the car was competitive) he ran DAMN well. He didn't bring it this weekend no doubt.
When Kimi does well, everyone is on his (insert noun here), when JPM does well, no one says a word. People always remember when Kimi's car breaks when he's in the lead, but no one says anything when it happened to Juan which it did a few times last year. I've always given Kimi credit where it was due, I alos give it to the 2nd man when he earns it though, hardly anyone else on here does though...

I met Rubens and Felipe once when they were here in Indianapolis 2 years ago (before the circus of a 6 car race).
I couldn't believe how short they are... I'd say about 5'4. We were at a local club called the Vapour Lounge. I talked to Rubens and asked him what it was like racing in Bahrain for the first time.. he said it was hot.
I told Felipe he did a good job out there... he looked at me puzzled and found out he was taken out in the first few laps... Needless to say, I felt stupid.
Apparently Rubens and Felipe stayed with our friend at his house staying up till 4am smoking cigars and drinking.
The club they were at was SawEEEETTT!! There were some gorgeous models who were paid to do nothing more than mingle with everyone! And the Red Bull and Vodka drinks were free!!!

I give SSpeed much credit for finishing the race vs going out and doing some possible fleeting fast moments only to toss it later.
IMHO's:
I like Kimi cuz he's a Scandahovian like myself. :p
Nico too! Plus Keke was my man back in the day. I'll never forget seeing him sucking on a *** before every race.
I like to not like MS as I normally root for the underdog. Plus everyone talk as if he's god yet last season we saw a mere(sp) mortal. Haha I guess in Bahrain too.
Alonso simply gets the job done, humbly!!!
Chili Dog is a fickle driver. I do give him credit for seeing the checkers. That's important!
I like Woobens and want to see him get some wins. He's a gracious man that stood in the shadows whilst driving hand-me-downs for many years.
:)

I was so impressed with how Rosberg drove this race. I have been reading alot about him in the off season in all of the British rags. I think he will live up to the hype and win a WDC some day. I was also very impressed with Williams as a whole. The team performed great, well beyond what I thought they would do. Looks like it should be a great year, I just hope Toyota gets thier act together. I also did pretty well in the pick 6. This is my first year playing so I dont think I will do very well.

You, Stubeck, and Artkevin are Montoya fans, and you don't agree with me. I am 100% cool with that. Everyone's got their opinions. :D
You said it up there though, WHEN JPM actually competed...to me it seems that he doesn't try too hard(again, MHO).
I will agree that everyone likes to ride Kimi's jock when he does well. But he produces consistently, when his car doesn't break down. He's had the worst luck that I know of as an F1 driver. 30 failures since 2001. Kinda hard to win championships when you can't put the car through the checkered flag. But he still shows up and tries his darndest.
As far as backing goes, at McLaren it will go to Kimi every time as far as I can see. Why should it go to Montoya? What has he done to put McLaren in the limelight? Sure he's had a couple good races, but so far all he's done is injure himself playing "tennis", and hurting McLaren's chances for winning the constructors cup. He won't be able to win the hearts of the Silver Arrows crew as long as he keeps doing stuff like that.
*all of this said is MHO, and that's it. With that and a buck, I can get a cup of coffee.

Well, I think that Kimi pulling off miracle drives almost all the time in spite of his car are why you have to endure him getting the praise while others don't get mentioned. All I can remember is when JPM screwed up while in a podium position to lose manufacturer's points.
However, he was a brilliant driver in spite of his tennis injury if that helps... ;)

Everyone knows I'm a rabid Kimi fan... There is no secret to that. I think he's one of the best out there and that has been proven time and time again. I think the only reason he doesn't have a WDC is because he seems to have the worst luck on the planet.
I think every driver has their share of boneheaded moves in one way or another, whether it be Kimi frequenting strip joints, JPM's injury, Sato's antics, whatever...
I do respect JPM's performance in the latter half of the season. I appreciate that he and Kimi both seem to take the punches without the complaints, which seem to be a prevalent thing in F1 these days. (Whether it be Alonso complaining about backmarkers or Ferrari complaining about everything. Man, I know I'm gonna get ripped a new one for the Alonso comment. I think he's a great driver, just an observation....)
If I'd had to pick one lazy person in the sport, it'd have to be Ralfie. I've never seen someone flap their gums so much and not have crap to back it up... When he starts earning the $25 mil he's getting every year, then I'll retract that statement...
Just my opinions, which are worth as much a ticket to Spa this year...

What happened to Williams starting off slow "like they always do"? ;)
One of the things that I found very interesting about this race was how many drivers turned a lap within a second of the fast lap. 10 drivers did it this year compared with only 4 last year, and 6 in 2004. Hopefully that says something about the parity of the cars but maybe it just says more about there being more traffic on the track.
The thing that really stood out to me about Nico's passes of Klein and Coulthard at the end of the race was how he was just destroying them down the straights. Unfortunately I couldn't tell if this was because he was coming through the corners faster or if the Williams was just that much faster than the Red Bull car in a straight line. Either way it was damn impressive.

Yeah for the JPM support.
I agree with what most people are saying about Fernando. IMHO I don't think there is a thing wrong with him or his ability, other then that wierd duck hand and pelvic danve thing he does. He seems very personalbe and when I have talked to him at the USGP he seems down to earth. As far as the blue flag thing, JoD and I talked about it during the race. He sad the backmarkers were doing a good job of pulling over themselves but the marshals were not putting out the blue flags. Also, by he time radios in and his engineer talks to Charlie Whiteing theres at least 1 minute. So Alonso has to call for the flag as soon as the slower car is in his sight. To add to that, he had to put in some really hot laps to catch Schumi in the pits.
And give it up for Nico. That dude is gonna be a great.
CN: JPM good. Freddy Good. Nico Good.

but Schumacher wasnt complaining about blue flags when he had to run the hot lap to get out in front of alonso when he got out of the pits. you know the part that decided the race? Its just that year after year, alonso has been complaining about it. Just look at how quickly Kimi passes the backmarkers at the start of the race. Learn how to pass and stop complaining.

JPM-60 points. Kimi-112. Despite motors blowing up, hydraulic failure, and even the flat-spotted tire(which I 100% admit is his fault), he still ended up 2nd in points.
Michael had a crappy year, and he still beat JPM in points.

Kimi and Alonso are the best two drivers in F-1. It would be cool to see them both on the same team. Too bad it would be Mclaren. Maybe they will figure out how to keep two cars going for the whole weekend by then.

Enough with the Kimi vs JPM bickering..honestly it's getting silly.
Besides, if you look at their statistics there's really not much to choose between them.

For the people that keep complaining about how unlucky Kimi is, look up Chris Amon...
JPM-60 points. Kimi-112. Despite motors blowing up, hydraulic failure, and even the flat-spotted tire(which I 100% admit is his fault), he still ended up 2nd in points.
Michael had a crappy year, and he still beat JPM in points.

Thats not what I'm saying. You said Montoya didn't TRY HIS HARDEST. I'm saying. Since back from his injury, he finished IN THE TOP 3 of ALL races he finished (minus the 14th for obvious reasons). So does THAT show he doesn't try??? Just looking for what you are basing your opinions on. In the last 1.2 of the season. 4 wins for Kimi, 3 for JPM. One of those guys doesn't try hard???
No doubt Kimi is performing better, no one is saying he's not. But JPM's finishes SURELY do not indicate that he does not push.

interesting statistics. Its really funny, because the exact same F1 thread on orlandoforums.com turned into a Kimi vs JPM debate too. weird stuff.
but you can see, JPM does have less race pace then kimi. 26 front row starts and 13 poles but only 7 wins and 28 podiums. Kimi has 15 front row starts and only 8 poles and 9 wins and 31 podiums. Thats because of races like Bahrain, Montoya gets a good qualifying result, but doesnt do anything with it, just kinda cruises along, where as Kimi flies.

Kimi is definately faster. JPM cruising??? He drove from last to 2nd last year. (better than what Kimi did yesterday)
Just because he maybe slower than Kimi 75% of the time, doesn't mean he's "cruising".
