Kimi takes care of business. This is why I like him. When everything works(in other words, when the car doesn't break down), Kimi manages to do his thang quite well. Both Toyotas in the top 5, and Alonso taking 2nd. Good race with a few passes.

cheers to kimi and a dominationg performance, jeers to schumacher having two blown tires in 2 laps :furious:
anyone see that pass where fisichellia(sp?) almost made contact with webber at 200mph(er, maybe the other way aroud)? wicked ballsy pass and webber almost bumps him to block, yesh

Kimi just needs to calm down during those post race press conferences, that boy is out of control!
Kimi drove great. Wonder what would have happened in 2nd place if Fisi hadn't picked up debri under his wing. He looked faster then Alonso near the end and was. Fastest lap of the race at 1:15.641. Up to that point Michael had set fastest lap. Looked like MS might of pulled out another San Marino if he didn't have two flat tires. Pretty sure he must have gotten them on the same lap but the front was just slower to go down. Last year he would have had all four changed at the same time and still been in it.

I admit that it was an illadvised move on Webber part but Derek Daily made it sound like he took a hard right at him. To me it looked like he was trying to keep Fisi honest but again, he should not have done it. The worst is when he did it to DC I think in Baharian last year. Webber took him fully across the track when he was clearly going to get passed.
Good race, not as exciting as Imola but all of the cars were fast. Its good to see that Ferrari is getting beaten by faster cars ON the track. Not rule manipulation and what not. I truley think that like Max Mosely always says is that he blames the other teams for not being fast enough, not Ferrari being too fast. Good job by all today.

Derek did kind of over react, but that's what I mean, Webber does this kind of crap more often than anyone else out there. Fisi gobbled up the gap down the straight so fast that it was crystal clear who was faster and that the pass was done. Very unnecessary.

Maybe this is a n00b question, but when Schumi had his first tire failure, the team replaced his wheel and tire. The new wheel looked silver when all the rest of the wheels were black. Is that because carbon dust from the brakes covered the three wheels and the usually the wheels are silver or is there another reason? That was the first time I've ever noticed something like that.
| bemani | 05-09-2005 04:00 AM |

Those 2 cbs guys are such idiots. And they always get the drivers wrong. There are only 2 drivers in a team, its not hard to keep track of who is who.

Yeah, it's brake dust. Most of the cars are running black wheels by the end of the race.
And I was ok with the CBS yahoos in the first race, but good god they were annoying as hell this time. For the love of god, someone take the damn drawing tool away from Daly.
"See these two aerodynamic devices! I've drawn a circle around them... again. And look... a wheel with a button on it!!! It costs SHEER THOUSANDS of DOLLARS!"

I did'nt see the first CBS broadcast so maybe I was fortunate.
This broadcast was better with the sound off. Hearing the winglet explanation 5 times was a bit over the top. Way too much n00b talk even for the n00bs. btw I also fell asleep thru the majority of it.
Redtide is worried.
Toyota is happy.
McLaren looked scary fast. wtg Kimi!

Unfortunately, this race didn't have 1/100th of the excitement of the last race. If the front car was red, it would have looked like a replay from last year or the year before. Bridgestone needs to get their act together and if that McLaren can hold together, Kimi has a great shot at being WDC this year.

I like Daly and Shaheen but I wanted to give them both a punch to the face yesterday. Like you said, they where not so bad in Imola but they just talked about the smae thing over and over. Please, both of you choke each other until the end of the race.
One good thing Daly said was that when he drove the JOrdan last year he couldn't even keep his head up on a straight. I think that kinda drove home how incredibly fast those cars are.

I can't keep my head up straight for a 20 lap sprint race in a shifter kart (2g's) so I can't imagine doing it for 66 laps with 3.5g turns. Derek drove the Jordan in the wet, which, to me at least, would be very scary in itself. Jordan drivers have a hard time keeping the thing straight in the dry.
Overall good race. I'm glad McLaren was dominate since it is good to mix it up. I'm hoping for a McLaren one/two at Monte.

Notice how long the first stints are getting. Michael, Fisi, and Juan all made really long first stints and thus jumped a bunch of places. All three of them were in front of Trulli after the first pit stop. Too bad they all suffered some problem after that dropping them down or out.
| TimStevens | 05-09-2005 10:37 AM |
Sounds like a reasonable strategy if you know your tires are going to suck early... just have a miserable qualifying, sit tight while everyone burns off their fuel, then when they all pit in... maximum attack!
| Dussander | 05-09-2005 10:39 AM |
I wish Christian Klean would come back sooner.
| Dussander | 05-09-2005 10:43 AM |
The problem with the long first stint is you ideally need to be longer then the next guy and thus it is a guessing/gambling game and this is why the first stints keep getting longer and longer. At some point you start running into the one pit stop window, which will not usually work since you would then only get one shot at putting in your hot laps.
| BriDrive | 05-09-2005 11:54 AM |
Ferrari / Bridgestone fell on their faces here in Spain.
Following the completion of KR & MS's first pitstops, M Schumacher was STILL trailing the McLaren by 39 seconds just before his first tire incident. When they went to the image of Jean Todt shaking his head after the tire change, I had already done the math...it was over...however podium was desirable, Ferrari, you can bet wasn't going to walk away patting themselves on the back for a P3.
Bridgestone this year is in the EXTREMELY uneviable position that the McLaren engine builders were in last year.

What about the Webber 2 stopper with a short first stint? I think if he had a better car the statgey could have worked well.
| BillT | 05-09-2005 12:01 PM |
MS definitely had the pace for P3 or maybe a P2, but nobody was catching Kimi in that race.
| Dussander | 05-09-2005 01:00 PM |
I'm not saying they all run long first stints, but it is very popular if you are in a fast car but mid pack in qualifing. Really, you kind of want a slightly longer stint then the guys in front of you. So, Webber really needed to get pole for it to work. Kimi came in *sort* of early, but he had the pace to pull it off. Michael could have been on a one stopper. He pitted on 32 of 66 laps.
A couple of guys will definetely go for short first stints in Monaco, I just hope they don't end up slowing down the whole field until the first pit stops.
Exciting year for sure.

I thought that was John Madden trying to talk with an accent. At least he only referred to Montoya as Monteiro once.
And speaking of Montoya, was it just me or did his front left tire look almost slick when he came in for his last stop? I haven't seen any mention of this though so maybe its just my imagination.
Also, was Rubens stuck in traffic the whole race or is Michael just that much faster? More than 1.5 seconds difference between their fastest laps is huge. The only team that had a bigger difference between fastest laps was Red Bull and thats probably a result of Liuzzi retiring so early.

The Speed guys always say that the tire manufatures have to watch out about the depth of tread at the end of the race but I have never seen a mention of it outside of that. From the way the Bridgestone v. Michelin turned out in 03 it would not surprise me though.
| Dussander | 05-09-2005 03:57 PM |
Front right would be a weird one to be slick, BUT Montoya was the last to pit so it would figure his tires would be well worn.
Oh, what really bothers me in 2nd Qualifying on Speed is how David always seem to think the sector difference is for the one lap not the aggregate time. "WOW, Webber is really far ahead in the first short sector."

I so wish that FIA would provide a raw running time for Q2, not time with Q1's added onto it.
| artkevin | 05-09-2005 05:37 PM |
They started giving Q1 plus Q2 = profit this Sunday which helped. The system is still too complicated. I hope they go to 1 run on light fuel on Saturday before the USGP. I love seeing the cars in action but I don't know what the race fuel quli runs add to the show.

I noticed that, too. If I remember correctly, it looked as if there were only two visible grooves left on that tire. I was shocked, but the commentators didn't say anything, so I thought maybe I was seeing things (granted, the CBS commentators were rubbish this race). Glad I wasn't the only one.

I looked at this last night. I think it was mostly the camera angle and the sun that made it look bald. Webbers tire looked very much the same in his pit stop before Juan's and it was from the same camera angle. Unfortunatly, you never get a good shot of Juan's tire after that to compare. Kimi's looked pretty good down the straights.
