Kimi, and McLaren, have enough of a bad mechanical history on point and squirt tracks over the last few years, such as Magny Cours, Monaco, Hockenheim, and San Marino. From my memory (which could be totally off base), it's always been coming out of slow corners where the problems have surfaced. Given that Mangy Cours is a relatively short track, with 4 such corners, I don't like Kimi's chances.

There's a place in France...

Fernando - Michelin will be better here, and french car, french tires, french race...
Michael - Michael and Ferrari are the equal of Alonso and Renault, if not superior... this is only a tire war and B'stone is losing
Giancarlo - Good car on good tires... race day performance always an unknown
Kimi - McLaren will begin focusing on 2007, but Kimi will drive the crap outta this silver thing
Felipe - It would be good for Ferrari if Felipe steps it up on race day
Nick - BMW Sauber have been impressive recently
Jenson - Honda is supposedly showing up with faster bits
Jarno - Toyota may step it up... Jarno qualifies well here
So I think that the last four races have shown that Ferrari and Michael are the equal of Fernando and Renault, and the difference in performance comes down to the tires... The drivers and constructors championships are essentially a B'stone vs. Michelin tire war... While B'stone has stepped up their performance from last season, they are still need to step it up more to better Michelin. I predict B'stones will suffer from graining on Friday, if it is dry.

But the good news is that there is rain predicted all three days at Magny-Cours... Passing is difficult in the dry at this track, but a wet race would be delightful race long dog fight!

Bridgestones are competitive!
Many racers didn't run the 1st practice, so only 2nd practice times are significant, and are presented below...

The ambient temps were ~97 degrees, under clear skies w/light breeze. Track temps were ~127.

Note the tires, (B) & (M), below... The mix of B'Stone competitors near the top is very similar to the Indy 2nd Friday practice times. Which means that it is very likely that the Bridgestones are competitive this weekend. And we are likely to see a Ferrari team who are very focused on a race win this weekend. However, w/the Renault's working well, it should be a good dog fight for the win.
The open question is the durability of the tires. However, w/the short pit lane, a 3 stop pit strategy is in play.

Here are the Friday 2nd practice times:

When did the BMW F1.06 sprout McLaren horns? I didn't notice them until this weekend.

pio!pio! 07-14-2006 03:49 PM

they didn't sprout those horns until this weekend, which is why you haven't noticed :)

they work in conjunction w/ those antenna wings
StuBeck 07-14-2006 04:25 PM

Their rear wing is new too.

Its amazing watching the cars go through the chicanes and them just bouncing around. I don't think Bridgestone will be as good as they were last weekend, the tyres on Micheals car were looking really bad after a few laps.
KAX 07-14-2006 07:39 PM

bmw were complaining of tire problems though too. hopefully its just the track and not a michelin problem again.

i wonder how long itll take for some other team to give the antennae wings a chance.
XenoWolf 07-14-2006 08:55 PM

I don't mind the new vertical spoilers, but I bet the drivers do. That has to be right in thier line of sight...
artkevin 07-14-2006 09:33 PM

OMG, when I 1st saw the vertical slacks on the BMW I thought it was new and inventive and not too bad. After seeing it run today I have made up my mind that they are God awful. I mean, damn.

MattDell 07-14-2006 10:39 PM

Was practice show today? Because my TiVo didn't catch anything....
OnTheGas 07-14-2006 10:54 PM

The Beemers' wings...
Last week, Jacques and Kubica were testing BMW's new nose wings (upside down nose hairs?) at Jerez. Nick Heidfeld was given the week off to rest his neck after his violent roll at Indy.

So earlier today was the first time that Nick was able to run the car like this, and he said,
It is the first time I have driven the car with the new nose wings, and I agree with my team-mates that they do not interfere with my line of vision.
So besides the bird deflectors, and the new viking horns (a la McLaren), the other thing that would be different about the beemer this weekend would be the rear wings. On Friday at Canada, a photog was able to show that the rear wing was flexing at speed. However, the FIA, (Charlie Whiting) checked out the Beemer's rear wing, and found them to be legal. Later, the FIA told BMW to stiffen up the rear wings for France.

But having a stiff rear wing didn't hurt, since last week at Jerez the BMW's were setting very good times, and obviously Kubica did well here today as well.
OnTheGas 07-14-2006 11:23 PM

Friday's Chewed Up Tires
Many drivers enjoy Magny Cours, but a small problem with the track is that it is fairly green on F1 Fridays because the track is not heavily used.

However, the teams are apparently calculating that the track will rubber in fairly well by Sunday. As it rubbers in, the grip levels will climb. The tire companies are bringing tires from the medium to soft compound ranges that will work well on Sunday with a different track than what was seen today.

So I believe that is why teams and tire companies were saying that tire graining was an issue today. Someone more knowledgeable than I should correct me if I'm wrong, but tire graining is when a race tire is not quite getting up to its optimal heat range, and is sliding around and chewing itself up. On the other end would be a tire which is over it's optimal heat range and then blisters (which is what Montoya will likely to do to his stock car tires ;) sorry! that's another thread!).

The other thing about tires at Magny Cours is the difference between the performance over one lap vs. the performance over a long run. Over a long run, one would want their tires to be steady in performance, & not degrade. Bridgestone and Ferrari indicated that they are good this weekend in that regard.

But one lap performance is also very important at Magny Cours because it is so damned difficult to pass here (unless it rains). So on Saturday, during qualifying, if your tire can provide very high grip levels as it comes to temp during a qualifying flyer lap, you've got a leg up on your competition. Ferrari sounded a little worried about this issue in their Friday practice notes.

Saturday should be interesting...

Now it's time for a cocktail! :)

Macca is just having a bad year. Assuming that was part of the pit strategy, they have dropped the ball twice in three races. I can't wait for Kimi to compete for the DC next year, in a better car, with a better team.

Second would have been tough. 3rd was more likely...

And thats' not even including the fact that he would have run heavier, slowing him down somewhat.

Kimi was 2 secs down and gaining fast.

In part, because he was on a lighter fuel load....a fuel load that couldn't get him to the finish.

There was about he finished what, 33 bacK? And 2nd was about 11 back? Thats a 22 second difference...which is longer than the pit stop...

He would have been a couple seconds back, fighting for the spot...

He didn't get gas on the last pit. He had the gas to finish.

EDIT: You were right.

I was just goign to say you were right...because I was half asleep during the race and thought I had mis-heard/saw what was going on.

He definately would've been in the fight for 2nd...

Wow! Hello Toyota!
Toyota had a very real chance to have been on the podium today... Ralf's race pace was very strong, and Jarno's was almost as fast.

Jarno broke, but he had been in position to fight for the podium.

Ralf suffered a long 1st pit-stop due to a stuck wheel nut... but was still had the pace to pass both Fisichella's Renault, and Kimi's McLaren for 4th place.

Talk about adding salt to Honda's wounds... Honda was lost this weekend, and they broke both motors in the race! Rough times indeed for our friends at Honda!

One of the more interesting races this season is to see which team will finish 4th in the constructor's championship. Here are the five "2nd tier" teams in contention for the 4th spot and their current championship positions:

4th Honda 32 points - They are here because the kicked a$$ early in the season, averaging more than 4 points per race for the first 7 races of the season.
5th Toyota 21 points - After Silverstone, Toyo had only 8 points, and were in 7th place!
6th BMW Sauber 20 points - For the last 7 races they have been averaging ~1.5 points per race by getting one or two cars in the points, as did Nick today w/1 point for 8th
7th Red Bull 11 points - Coulthard grabbed most of these points w/his podium finish at Monaco
8th Williams Cosworth 10 points - The last time Williams scored any points was Nurburgring, which was May 7th... They have lost their way.
Did Kimi flat-spot his tires 2 times this race? Is that why he had that 3rd pit stop?

no, he needed 6 more laps of fuel to make it to the finish. his tires were fine.
he could have had 2nd place, but i doubt he would have fought for it. he would have been behind alonso for alittle while and not been able to pass, then give up, much like he ended up doing but in 5th place rather then 3rd. he was 22 seconds back because he stopped trying, not because he was slower.

Again, you're making the HUGE assumption that on HEAVIER fuel, he wouldn't been able to catch and pass the current champion. Who's to say Alonso wouldn't have picked up the pace???

Again, Kimi was lighter on fuel, to say that with a heavier car, coupled with the fact you have no idea how Alonso would have reacted, and the HUGE GIGANTIC IF Kimi would have been able to pass him, which is not easy...ask Schuey...

Its takes a heck of a fanboy to say Kimi wouldn't had second if he tried...

Kimi being faster (which you don't even know...He was running LIGHTER!)...and Kimi passing FA are two entirely different things...
KAX 07-16-2006 04:53 PM

i just said he probably wouldnt have passed him. he could have if he really tried, but i know he wouldnt have because hed gain very little and it wouldnt be worth it to him. he would have caught up to about 1 sec behind and then follow him to the finish, much like he did with ralf.
