[QUOTE=brcewane;16718915]*********** UPDATE *************
I've been doing some ergonomics testing for myself about having the screen where I have been mocking it up in the previous pictures. I am pretty short (5'7" on a good day depending on barometric pressure) and being able to reach up into this area when driving or plain sitting in the driver's seat of the car is a bit far for me.
It wouldn't be bad if it was just a display, but since it is a touch screen display and I will be doing navigating with my finger this is a bit of a problem.
So I have been doing some more research and have found another place that I think I am going to put the LCD. It will require a bit of re-routing of the HVAC system behind the dash and the hazard switch but I think it will work better for me. I will have to get some different vents or make my own but this is the general idea... from the measurements that I have taken with my screen it looks like it should fit.. it will be tight but should fit.
Let me know what you think :D

too much work and probably won't yield very good results. I'd move the gauges out, get a single DIN clock pod and put the stereo there, and use the double DIN you free up for your monitor. Either that or your original plan.

It is actually less work than what I had planned :D

hmmm i liked the original idea but im sure you'd be able to pull it off. just trying to think what kinda vents you would use? hmmmmmm

The origional idea is way cleaner looking. The other way seems too cluttered imo.
| wrxfactor | 01-18-2007 10:51 PM |
I say you get rid of the cupholder area and have the screen come out flat then tilt up 90*.
| IIdiceII | 01-18-2007 10:58 PM |
if youre gonna put the screen there, you might as well just buy a double din navi setup and move the gauges to a defi pod...the coolest part of the original idea was that it hides away...so awesome.

yeah, not too excited about the vent relocation idea. i don't think there'd be enough room, first off... but i also just don't like the asthetic change. the pop up was the entire draw behind it. just do the mattjk screen instead.
| brcewane | 01-19-2007 07:24 AM |
I'm also looking at possibly doing the R34 type of thing to get it closer to the driver. So that the screen wouldn't pop up but be fixed, and I would have it right above the vents.
The popup area is really cool but it isn't functional. That's why the controls for the OEM nav screen are still in the din location.

you need to make the controls remote and mount them on the steering wheel . . .
:D

That would be nice.. but hard to do with a touchscreen :)

oops!
the pretty pictures w/ knobs & buttons overpowered my reading comprehension!

definately one of the coolest parts is the pop up/hideaway design, however if it isn't functional it's pointless. I like the idea of moving it to where the vents are, definately original. I think you could scavenge a junkyard and find some vents off something to fit ( I know my Jeep has some talk skinny vents on the sides.. or even nab a couple more of the round side vents from a newer impreza, they would probably fit nicely.)

Any update?
| brcewane | 02-05-2008 07:16 AM |
no not really.. still dealing with getting the hard drive onto my Compact Flash card.. it has been giving me grief :(
| exrage | 02-05-2008 08:55 AM |
you can't put an OS on just any cf card. at least not XP. it has to be a fixed CF card and only the newer ones are. I am running the sansa super ultra high security paid too much for card. not the exact name but it is in there somewhere...

Yes, it is XP with the embedded additions and the CF is fixed, it is a newer 8GB one and it is plugged into the IDE slot using a CF to IDE adaptor.

Thats sick, cant wait to see the finished product!
| exrage | 02-06-2008 07:54 AM |
i had no problem w/ my fixed one. I am using only a 4 gig though. are you going to horm the cf drive when it is all said and done?
That is what I ended up doing and then am using a 4 gig jump drive for all of my software. It makes RR updates and changes a lot easier that way. Also are you running any phone support on RR?

"horm the cf drive"
If you mean do I have it configured that no writes go to it unless I commit them.. then yes. This will reduce the number of writes to the CF card.. Virtual memory is also turned off
I am running RoadRunner on mine and will likely have it hook up bluetooth or USB to my BlackBerry

What motor were you going to use? I really think I want a motorized single din in that location. I had a police scanner mounted in the factory pod before and it's the first thing the police notice when I get pulled over. :/

New to your thread Bruce, I just read both this one and the headlight one (Awesome Work!)
I was wondering if you had given any though to the heat of the sun on the console and what effect it would have. It will be under some stuff, but how hot will it get inside your car in the middle of summer? I'm new to this kind of thinking so bear with me...
