The fender flares and diffuser certainly hint at bad intentions ;)
lukerussell 03-19-2007 03:41 PM

she runs, it's just missing some fluff.

doug has done a beautiful job, it's been his obsession for the last 10 months or so.

lexan side windows are in. all that's left:
new front bumper
splitter
passenger seat
steering wheel
mild rear spoiler
new doors maybe
some misc. trim items

we'll have a detailed report about the car and specs once we get a little closer to One Lap. we've got some good sponsors and media lined up. we have 3 test days lined up before One Lap to work out any kinks - should be fun!

If you need a drop spot for parts I will be at Hallett with you guys on the 9th so I can bring them to you. Let me know if you need any help.

lukerussell 03-19-2007 04:19 PM

thanks. did hallet get repaved or does it still have that sand paper in the corners? ha. crazy grip.

luke
SubaruCO 03-19-2007 04:20 PM

NICE! It's thinking outside the box. Looks like solid contender.

What fender flares did you guys use and where did you get them from?
lukerussell 03-19-2007 04:26 PM

doug got them. i forget the website. but they're actually for a nissan 240 and they just rivet on. cheap, mean and functional.

luke

We're tentatively planning to be at Mid-Ohio on the 11th and could also bring parts, donuts, coffee or other supplies with us. If you're coming up for a track event at Mid-Ohio and are willing to stay an hour and 20 minutes north near the Cleveland airport we'd be willing to offer up the spare room as well.
Badazzcr 03-19-2007 04:58 PM

Ohh no the word is out of the SE... LoL
lukerussell 03-19-2007 05:07 PM

mmmm, donuts.

i think mid ohio is the last day, so we'll be zombies by then.

one of our pre-event track days will be mid ohio on april 20th. we haven't really made any plans other than that. i may have to fly back to FL afterwards (sorry doug), so being near the airport might be sweet. i'll let you know.

Hallett didnt get repaved, it just got sealed. It still has loads of grip but now without the rough spots and cracks. It's very fast and very smooth. I'll be out there next month testing our new setup on both cars.

That thing is friggin' sick. Whats the drivetrain? I'll be keeping and eye out for this year.

Simply amazing.

More details on the flares would be really appreciated (make and retailer)

Keep it up and keep us posted :D

My 07 hopes of running the One Lap have evaporated, but am looking to 08. Will be with a mildly prepped STi just for fun. Good luck and keep us all posted.
Patrick L 03-20-2007 11:58 PM

Well I should be around when you goto Hallett.
davis10 03-21-2007 12:41 AM

Why does the rear diffuser extend past the bumper?
Fitz 03-21-2007 06:15 AM

Nice work. Looks very intriguing. Where can I (selfishly) go to learn more about the setup?

That is awesome. Good luck with the one lap. From reading about the last few years you'll just need to keep it out of the walls and make sure it won't break down. Reliability is key. That thing is going to fly.

Any chance I could drive it around a track- just once?
lukerussell 04-02-2007 11:26 AM

i did my 46 pages of mapquests today. the car will travel 4,330 miles during this years event - in 8 days.

i think we're going to have ipod in the car w/ dual jacks and noise cancelling headphones. we'd like to have ipod hookup for both of us w/ a way to talk to each other without taking off the headphones. some sort of trick rally/ipod combo hookup. any ideas?

bose makes noise canceling headphones for pilots, this might be what you are looking for. price new is 1k, might be able to find some used ones a little cheaper...

Bone conduction headsets (that sit over your temples) and regular motorola radios. If you get the behind the head style (rather than over the head style) they should also work under your helmet. I'll have to bring a set by the shop for Doug to check out.

Talk to Ken or Christian. I believe both SRT USA cars have this kind of transit headset layout.

Our cheap Terraphone has an audio input so it can be done.
TopSpeed 04-03-2007 06:56 PM

Actually found just what we needed. Chatterbox makes an in car person to person system for a very good price. Bonus part is it has a hook up for your ipod or cdplayer so both of you can listen to music while your driving.
sperry7 04-03-2007 07:02 PM

I'm going to try and make it out to one or two events this year to cheer you guys on! Good luck I can't wait to see how this thing rips...

Any updates on the car or are you keeping it hush hush?
S.G.D 04-03-2007 07:36 PM

i saw you mentioned lexan windows.

where did you get them? are they produced by a company or custom??

what is the weight difference?

Thanks!
lukerussell 04-04-2007 01:08 PM

lexan windows are a no go right now. they'll probably go on after one lap when the car goes into full time attack duty. along w/ carbon fiber doors.

the lexan side windows only save a pound or two. i think the rear saved maybe 10 lbs. i don't remember what company doug was looking at.

other than that, i think the car is nearly ready to go. doug is going to put in a passenger seat from an impreza L so we can have a nice comfy reclining seat for the passenger to sleep on. harnesses still need to go on. some sort of rear spoiler needs to go on. we're keeping the brighton bumper on for now and no front splitter (it will get busted about 2am on some freeway in the middle of nowhere), doug added a flexible front skirt instead to keep air from getting underneath. i think doug is on version 3.0 of creating a baffle to quiet this thing down for freeway duties - it's pretty trick.

that's all i got. i think we'll get some pictures and detailed info up after our first test day on April 20th.

luke
88conquestTSI 04-04-2007 04:35 PM

Open downpipes are fine on the highway, just wear earplugs and clutch it when you drive past a police officer.
Badazzcr 04-04-2007 04:57 PM

She is officially ready, put the harnesses in today plus covered up the few holes in the firewall. Also got the tags, headlights, and wing (yet to install). Should have all of that done on it tomorrow. As for my silencer v2.14, its a work of art, I made it so it slips over the 4" oval exhaust using two bolts to secure it. Also it has two baffles that slide inside the pipe one at about 5 inches in and the other about 2 inches further. Both Baffles have holes machined in them to allow exhaust to flow through. This is my newest designed baffle and so far it is amazing. The car is so quite now under cruise you don't even hear the motor, only wind and tire noise. But when removed the car is an animal, its going to be a great onelap. Everything I have built under the KISS principal. Keep It Simple Stupid, nothing fancy to break, except my silencer lol..

I can't wait.....

Johnny Butane 04-04-2007 05:47 PM

Doug that sounds a lot like the silencer setup we use on the shop 5.0 turbo car. We call it "the trombone". :D We changed the length a few times to get the sound we wanted and it comes off at the track.

Good luck to you guys and see ya at Hallett. Again, if you need any strategically placed parts just let me know.

jeff
Badazzcr 04-04-2007 05:51 PM

Yeah, I must have added on and re-made the silencer about 4 times now. Trying to get it quite with the lowest amount of back pressure possible. Its perfect now, Just hopes the silencer keeps together for the 5k mile journey. I couldn't imagine having to drive the car without it. It would be miserable, as its so loud with the 4 oval side exit exhaust.
taosracer 04-04-2007 11:58 PM

Good luck on One Lap guys, I remember the mean black machine from last year (saw it on E-bay too....couldn't afford it, bummer) I won't be running this year, but will be coming up to say hi in Pueblo. Brock Jr. and I talked today, and he can't let me run the wagon as a guest, too bad. The coupe looks like a rocket, are you entering in econo ? Cheers
servanium 04-05-2007 03:34 PM

I remember when I ran off my turboXS downpipe load as hell, but mad power down low to the point all 4 wheels would break lose with ease. Mid to high was a little on the boggy side. Although I was stock except for TBE & intake...

Its alot of fun though would especially be fun with a great tune (Doug) sounds like the tune for that is pretty much in the bag....lol

so close.

preparation is going good. i have a ton of free southwest tickets saved up so i went to pueblo on thursday. weirdest track day of my life. i show up at 8 cuz i know i need to leave by 11 to catch my plane. the road there is like i was on a lunar landing or something - deserty/rock/hilly. i'm the only dude there, as in only dude - no workers/employees. some guy in a truck shows up, i sign a piece of paper, give him $60 and go on the track. no flaggers, corner workers, ambulances, fire trucks, etc. but i did get lots of laps in 3 hours. it's a fun track - technical. each corner has it's own grip level. about 10am a c6 zo6 and a turbo porsche show up. that's it. i wish i had a $60 track in my town i could tear up anytime i wanted.

i fly to miller this wed night and leave thursday at 4pm. i'm signed up for three 25 minute sessions in a rented miller mustang gt. at least it has brakes and fluid and pads so i should be able to do 25 consecutive minutes. 75 minutes may be enough time to learn the 8400 corners and 4+ miles of track.

i'm doing the same thing next week, flying out to mid-ohio. but i'll get to meet doug as he is towing the brighton up there.

that will give me track experience at every track other than autobahn north, the first road course event. one lap will be interesting.

luke
Hobbessti 04-10-2007 12:12 PM

well It looks like One Lap is going to be at a track near me MAM. I have yet to make it out to the track here. but I assume that you are going to Pre drive the track? Well good luck
WRXedUSA 04-10-2007 12:29 PM

Stuff some fiberglass in the pipe and fix it with a removable grate.
drees 04-10-2007 03:03 PM

That thing sure looks mean. Looking forward to your results next month, good luck!
RyanC 04-10-2007 08:27 PM

Luke, lookin good! I hear Ron has the Viper back together with a low boost setting of about 700whp; good luck reeling him in! Wish I was running this year but my new race car is about 500hp shy of being a one lap contender, and nobody's given me a Viper to drive; oh well! Have fun, and keep the car in one piece

Ryan
lukerussell 04-18-2007 01:08 PM

Thanks Ryan.

update:
miller was fun. the mustang gt was actually very easy to drive. just don't push it through the slow corners, be patient, and everything is good. the 350z was definetely more tail happy than the tang.

definetely glad i went. i'm pretty sure miller is the easiest track in america to get lost on. it's flat so all the corners look the same. the dirt and the track are about the same color. there isn't much visual referance. and there are like 20 something corners to learn. i drove the mustang over 150 miles, so i'm in good shape now, but i was lost my first 5 laps or so.

as i was leaving miller, the cobb time attack car (the white one, not the crazy one), was pulling onto the track. i would've liked to see that thing go. i hadn't eaten in a day and a half so i ordered a pastrami cheeseburger thinking it would be pastrami on a bun w/ some cheese - but in fact it was a full blown cheeseburger w/ a wad of pastrami thrown in for good measure. crazy race track food.

the brighton is ready to go. doug is putting the finishing touches on a new radiator and de-tuning the car (so i don't break it), then he's headed up to mid-ohio to meet me for some testing on friday. the goal is to learn the track, get used to the car, then dial it in. i'll have a much better feel on just how competitive we'll be on friday. good times.

luke
PhilC 04-18-2007 01:37 PM

Got a ride from the airport and a place to stay yet Luke and Doug? Our place is still available if needed, we're maybe 10 minutes from Cleveland airport and about an hour 20 from Mid-Ohio.
lukerussell 04-18-2007 01:42 PM

i appreciate it phil. i'm arriving by plane crazy late. doug towing will be crazy late. we decided just to get a hotel close to mid-ohio so we didn't have to drive very far in the morning. we'll both be leaving friday afternoon to go home. short trip.

come by the track if you get a chance, either friday or during one lap.
